Typography Dialog turned into a Panel

Recommended Posts

  • Staff

Apps: All
Platforms: macOS and Windows

As has been requested numerous times we have now converted the typography dialog from a pop-up dialog into a panel so you can now easily dock it / keep it available should you wish.

This is available both fro the Window menu (note: this is currently at the bottom of the panel listing, but will be changed to be a sub menu from the Text panel options next week), and also from the typography button in the context toolbar image.png when you have text selected.

A very minor cosmetic issue with the positioning of the 'Hide irrelevant features' checkbox and associated text where it is sitting right on the left edge of the panel rather than being aligned with the checkbox and radio buttons above...

If you load a studio preset saved in 2.4.x, you will be unable to open the Typography panel. The menu command, Context toolbar button, and Character > Typography "more" button will do nothing and the menu command will remain unchecked.

Reset Studio clears up this problem.

Please, make the Typography panel resizable vertically. Now it has fixed height.

The Typography menu item is available twice in Affinity Photo. Once in the main branch Window, the other under the TEXT menu item.

I deleted my previous 2.4+ betas and have downloaded 2.5 directly from my account.  I have just tested Designer 2.5 and have found something strange.  Having selected some frame text, I tried the "fi" button on the Context toolbar.  Nothing.  Then I tried TEXT>Show Typography.  Nothing.  Tried to access the new Typography Panel these two ways several times.  Nothing.  So then I used WINDOW>TYPOGRAPHY and the panel immediately popped up.  Now both other ways to access this panel work perfectly too, whether or not I have saved the new Typography Panel on the left or right studio.

I will try this again with Photo 2.5.   Edit:  Same thing happened.

Edit again:  Same thing with Publisher.  Not only that, but then after using WINDOW>TYPOGRAPHY to get the panel working, I tried StudioLink with Photo, and was back to square one.  Both "fi" and TEXT/Show Typography would not respond.

I purposely deleted the 2.4 + betas on my desktop to be sure that there were not any carry-over glitches.  So all three 2.5 Betas are fresh installs from my Affinity account.

I have made a video of this, in case anybody would like to see what I am finding.

Try resetting your studio. I had this problem when I loaded a 2.4 studio preset and only resetting my studio or restarting solved it. If you just deleted the app your presets would still be there so it might be something like that. You could try restarting first and if that doesn't solve it then reset your studio.

@MikeTO  well, I will try that tomorrow, although I have everything working right now.  But it seems to me that we shouldn’t have to load or unload anything to sort this out.  Maybe just me.

April 20: @MikeTO  I have found that I had one studio preset for Affinity Photo.  It downloaded with the fresh installation of 2.5 from the Affinity Store.  In the process, I have discovered that some of my linked brushes and palettes from V. 2.3 (Photo and Designer) also downloaded but some others did not. Seems to be quite random.  But that is another topic.

Is it possible to run Typography panel with the options minimized and only the Capital expanded? This is probably the most used option.

Or move Capital to the top of the panel.

I think the current order makes sense but perhaps it would be better if the sections that normally have a small number of options (Capitals, Figure Width, Figure Position...) could be positioned above the potentially long lists of alternates and variants. These screenshots are of Adobe Garamond Pro, EB Garamond 08 Regular, and Trattatello and the panel is at full heigh on my 14" MBP.

I don't think I'd like the panel sections opening collapsed because when I click in a different font with different sections they'd keep collapsing. The sections also can't remember their state when opening the panel for the same reason.

I love that Affinity shows samples for everything but perhaps there should be a panel menu command to hide them because they're distracting when typing.

It pretty much has to be removed, as it no longer opens either the Typography window or the new Typography panel (at least on the Mac).

I would also suggest that the latter should be tucked into Window > Text > Typography, next to Character, Glyph Browser, Paragraph and Text Styles.

And that's me, a typography teacher saying it, but I'm not biased to the point of thinking that what is essentially an advanced version of the Typography section in the Character panel (which you can, indeed, open by clicking the “ellipsis/more…” button on the latter) should be a top-level, uncategorised panel.

While you’re at it, would it be difficult to add the following feature for collapsing and expanding panel sections to all panels?

A better explanation of the feature is provided by fde101:

I see this occasionally, the All Alternates and Stylistic Sets seem to be blank unless both are opened. Close both and then open one or the other and I'll see a blank area. Sometimes it will show properly if I click somewhere else.
