I am new to Affinity, only discovering it recently, and I'm currently only running a trial to see if I can use this to replace my Adobe Subscription. I stumbled across a youtube video that says the Version 2.0, when released, would be a re-purchase in order to get the update. I wanted to know what version Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer are currently on, and if they have a release date for the 2.0 version? I want to plan out the best time to purchase these apps. If the 2.0 release is years away I plan to purchase it now, but if it is only months away I want to wait.

My feeling is that it's years away. And I guess Serif will not tell you more details.

Version before release is 1.7 (yet only Beta), I would certainly not waiting to 2.0.

If you look at this roadmap, it is very long, and it's a long time to complete.

Affinity Store: Affinity Suite (ADe, APh, APu) 1.8.3.
Windows 10 Pro, Version 1909, Build 18363.720.
Dell Latitude E5570, i5-6440HQ 2.60 GHz, 8 GB, Intel HD Graphics 530, 1920 x 1080.
Dell OptiPlex 7060, i5-8500 3.00 GHz, 16 GB, Intel UHD Graphics 630, Dell P2417H 1920 x 1080.
Intel NUC5PGYH, Pentium N3700 2.40 GHz, 8 GB, Intel HD Graphics, EIZO EV2456 1920 x 1200.

The retail release of version 1.7 is apparently many weeks away, and there have been strong indications that there will be at least a version 1.8 (and probably also a 1.9, and perhaps even a 1.10 and 1.11) before version 2.0 is released. It therefore seems very unlikely that version 2.0 is less than a year away.

Thanks everyone! I wanted to make sure that 2.0 wasn't around the corner before making a purchase. I think I will buy now and upgrade to 2.0 down the road when available.

I think we could make bets :-) I'm betting 2022.

Having in mind that they need to update from 1.5 to 1.6 or from 1.6 to 1.7 almost a year... version 2.0 is far, far away in the future.

If 2.0 is years away I guess my final switch from PS to Affinity is also years away.

Maybe GIMP could be the solution.

I have the impression the development of GIMP is finally speeding up to a very reasonable cycle.

Maybe it won't be Affinity but GIMP. But we'll see.

I will refine my tip on 22.2.2022, ideal date for the release of version 2, or 2.22? :-)

Or 2.20, or 2.0.2. ;-)

No, no, it's already clear speculation :-)

Seriously? You sound quite jaded. What features are you looking for exactly that 1.7 and 1.8 won't have but 2.0 will exactly? How on earth is GIMP a solution? What does GIMP have that you can't find in AP? There are work-around for nearly any difference. If you reply I, or someone here, might be able to help <3

Since i first started looking at Affinity as alternative to Adobe, I think there has been a lot of concentration on the mobile apps and the launch/development of Publisher. It seems like development of Designer has really slowed down?

Let me put it this way... wait for the features you are looking for to materialize in an update before making any purchase. Come back in four years for a status.

The list of changes/fixed/improvements for that beta isn't even comprehensive (lots of minor fixes/improvements never get enumerated) but it suggests to me that the pace of development has not slowed as much as it just takes progressively longer to make changes as the code becomes more complex.

I recommend everyone to buy the software is a wonder also affinity team is constantly attending to errors and problems, especially I recommend buying it because you help the development team to continue with this great project, total, from here to come the version 2.0 you will have made more money or better customers.

I thought these apps could be updated without additional fees.

All version 1 updates are free. We are currently at version 1.8 & version 1.9 is being worked on. There may be other updates as well, like a version 1.10 & 1.11.

When version 2 is released (probably not for a year or more but no guarantees) they will be paid upgrades.
