Rudolphus reacted to NotMyFault in Remove thin lines caused at edges of patterns and vector shapes
Hi,
There are many posts complaining about "thin lines" becoming visible under certain circumstances, in Photo, Designer, and Publisher.
vector shapes touching each other at their edges patterns of pixel layers (tiles)
The principle cause is anti-aliasing, which is active by default. All pixels at edges of layers will get anti-aliased. The function changes both the color and the transparency (alpha) of edge pixels. This will lead to partially transparent edge pixels. Depending on background layers, this often creates a line of of pixel width in light colors shining through. This can be very distracting in case of seamless patterns.
To remove the thin line, there are multiple options. Unfortunately, most recommended options do additional collateral damage:
Deactivating anti-aliasing, or modifying the coverage map, is global per layer and could lead to rough edges. Adding back-fill layers manually is very tedious There is a new simplified method, suitable when your document is pixel art, or will / can be rasterized at export.
Steps:
add a levels adjustment select the alpha channel set the white level to 75% (depending on blend gamma of the pattern layers, you may need to use 50% in case of blend gamma 1.0). In Photo, you can save this as preset for later re-use in other documents.
Whow does this work?
assuming you patterns / layer are fully opaque, and using default blend gamma of 2.2 Anti-aliasing will create edge pixels with a known range of alpha values: 75% to 100%. Values from 0% to 75% will only occur at edges where pattern do not face each other. The curves adjustments ensures all alpha values above 75% will reach 100%, thus effectively removing the thin line, and replacing it by the blend of the colors of neighboring pixels There is a minor collateral damage. These alpha values (75%-100%) may occur in other places. But the visual difference is small, and will be far less disturbing compared to a white line inside a seamless pattern. Example of distracting thin lines / background shining through:
harsh edges when deactivating AA:
Thin lines removed, while keeping AA active (with limited effect to alpha channel):
AA on edges stays intact in general (reduced alpha)
Requires settings in levels adjustment:

Rudolphus got a reaction from iuli in Adding/modifying appearance of multiple objects at once
Well, yet another workaround in ever growing list. And this one proves that the application CAN do it, so why do we have to use any workaround if there is a panel for it?
Sorry, I know this is not a question for you @loukash.

Rudolphus reacted to PPPeter in Export persona prefix and suffix for all slices
Currently it's only possible to set export name, path and variables per slice. It would be a huge improvement if you could set global values for all slices, like Illustrators prefix and suffix settings. One way would be simple prefix and suffix fields in the export options tab, or there could be a global path constructor for all slices with user variables and path components like document name, date, incremental counter (for versioning) etc.

Rudolphus reacted to Raven_DZ in STROKE PRESURE PROFILES
Hi, I have a suggestion for line pressure profiles. These profiles should be able to be saved with the application and not with the document, it is annoying to create the same profiles every time a new document is created. thanks for your attention.

Rudolphus reacted to Hilltop in How to create decent screenshots in Windows 10.
Thanks Komatös, I didn't know that one.
For those who use the PrintSc/PrtScn button for another app, the Snipping Tool can also be used by clicking the following key combination: Windows logo key + Shift + S

Rudolphus reacted to X-Raym in FR: Compress or Expand selected objects positions (Transform tool Mode)
This can be done in VectorStyler with Spacebar key:
Would be nice to have it in Affinity Designer as well...

Rudolphus reacted to smg in Gradient following an arbitrary path
May be very useful to have the possibility to fill an arbitrary path (stroke) with a gradient who it's front color is perpendicular to the path in every point, from start to the end.
Se attached file on the current behaviour, where the front of the gradient is parallel to the sheet.

Rudolphus reacted to Catshill in Being able to drag crop edges instead of small crop-handles
Dynamic crop handles that are always visible regardless of the zoom would be a big improvement .
-
Rudolphus reacted to Friksel in Being able to drag crop edges instead of small crop-handles
BTW related to this for future reference:
The Tool Handle Size option in the preferences, which is nice!, is scaling the shape-handles, node-, corner- and probably some more tool-handles, but not the crop-tool handles:

Rudolphus reacted to ashf in Quick Export command
Would be nice if you could add something like "Quick Export" command in Photoshop.
Export the file using last used setting or predefined setting by single action.

These are not my brushes, but if it’s ok with serif mods for me to post this, enjoy guys:
I picked them up they work on Affinity Photo iPad and video below confirms brushes works with affinity designer.

Rudolphus reacted to GarryP in [New 1.2] Free Vector Tools for Windows 10 Users
You’re welcome; glad you like it.
I have lots of ideas for extra functionality and will be adding more stuff at some point, but I can’t say what or when.

Rudolphus reacted to Thane5 in Splash screen that shows recent files
If users had a faster way to open previously opened files in Affinity apps, it would save them a fair bit of time.
I don't think it even has to be a fancy grid with thumbnails, just a list would already be enough to accomplish that.

Rudolphus reacted to Archangel in Fotosketcher svg export
https://fotosketcher.com/
Fotosketcher can now produce SVGs of Painting 4. This can be edited in Affinity Designer and processed as a vector image. Not quite a vector trace function but very useful.

Rudolphus reacted to v_kyr in Some Snowmen assets
Well winter time is comming (...sooner or later), so in order to be prepared, here are some reusable snowmen assets to share.
Note: that these snowmen assets do always consist of a lot of vector elements grouped together. Thus individually altering/changing their colors, or shapes, needs some amount of work & time for you then inside those groups. - Be aware of that!
Here is the corresponding "vector_snowmen" assets file:
vector_snowmen.afassets You may freely use/reuse these snowmen for whatever work you've to do. - Have fun!

Rudolphus reacted to mfarooqi in Add ability to precisely vary width of a stroke at any given point
yeh.. i'm a Blender user .. and I know this is not a space to discuss that.. But that is amazing in vector use.. but I'm still waiting Affinity Designer to bring these old yet very useful features in AD..
Merge and divide shapes with no "garbage" stuff as mentioned above.. Vector Width tool Expand stroke for Brushes.. symbols spray tool with shifting.. random rotation expanding and collecting etc.(even Macromedia Flash had it) Distribute objects Randomly Distribute Objects along path and rotate as needed (like text along path) Shape Blend tools Mesh Warp tools for Designer (AP does have this thing but only for once!) Gradient mesh tools are very important if you are making vector art perspective transform kind of tools.. (there are ISO and that is very cool ) And a bunch of more..
@acapstick @AdamW @Andrew MacDonald @James Ritson I dont' know who should I add in.
Thank you

Rudolphus reacted to Boroji in UI Clickable Prototype
Hello Affinity,
I would like to give you my money NOW. I really don't want to pay Sketch or Figma or inVision or Adobe XD or Framer X or Protopie or Webflow or UX Pin. I would love to buy a software from Affinity that enables the prototyping feature. Maybe a merge between Personas with added plugin to buy. OR maybe call the software Affinity Prototype or Affinity Interactive or Affinity Hybrid.
I have been creating lots of Websites and User Interfaces, but I can't quickly prototype it to get my idea across. I have been working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of 50 designers/developers/business analysts. And when it's time for me to pitch I have to manually go into my Visual Studio Code Editor and create it from scratch using CSS and JavaScript.
Still waiting for release date,
Thank you

Rudolphus reacted to retrograde in Bring back the roadmap or at least a dev blog please
I agree with a lot of what you are all saying.
I've been using Designer professionally since 2014 and would love to hear from the team more than we do on stuff they are working on or ideas they are thinking about for the future of these applications. I'm not talking about firm dates on upcoming features. That sort of stuff can wait until they are good and ready to share, no, just a little bit more behind the scenes contact with their user base would be nice from time to time. I would think that would be part of community building, an integral part of any company offering a product or service. I think they could be doing a better job at these sorts of things. Spotlight is great and the Affinity Youtube channel is starting to get some love but it would be nice to get a sense of where this ship is heading once in a while.
Having said that, I for one really hope some of the long standing requests/issues/features mentioned (by Serif and others) going back years now are either being addressed or at least discussed behind the closed doors at Serif HQ. I'm assuming they are cooking up some good stuff (2.0?), I hope I'm not wrong. Some of us have been in the waiting room a long time.
Edit: the below link is a great example of the sort of thing I am talking about. It's a link to Blenders latest roadmap from October 2021.

Rudolphus reacted to giantlobsterprd in Euston hoardings
I was recently commissioned to create a set of illustrations to go on construction hoardings around the Euston Station (London) area. I picked Affinity Designer as my weapon of choice, and the results can be seen if you take a wander around the district.
The one small production bummer was that the agency doing the artwork insisted on AI files so I have to convert them all before sending them out. Even despite that I would still have used Affinity for these as it's just a much nicer illustration tool than Adobe. I think these would have taken me twice as long in Illustrator, and given me a migraine along the way.

Rudolphus reacted to Dan C in Automatic change from full stop to comma in stroke?
I'll be sure to log this with our developers as an improvement - perhaps a checkbox in settings that allow you to use both regions decimal separators regardless of keyboard language
