Status: Beta

Purpose: Features, Improvements, Fixes

Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo

Mac App Store: Not Submitted

Download ZIP: Download

Auto-update: Available

Hello,

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the second beta of Affinity Photo 1.7.2 for macOS.

If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.

This beta is an incremental update to the 1.7.1 version recently released to all customers. We recommend that you use this beta in preference to the store version if you are affected by any of the issues listed below.

Thanks! So far seems a little faster on a couple things tried, and fixed at least one issue for me.

Having integrated APh into my workflow more and more, I am, however, finding a huge issue. I've rearranged things a lot in the Studio/workspace. And all too often, if I crash trying out things, I find I can lose my workspace arrangement and have to start all over again rearranging things to get it back to what I prefer for my work. At least I've become smart enough to do a screen capture of my workspace so I know where to begin

It would just be a HUGE improvement if we could save and name workspaces in all Affinity apps. Just takes too darned long to rebuild a workspace if a crash or something else resets it back to Default.

Thanks!

PLEASE: When using the Crop tool, can you enable the Esc key to = Reset crop selection to original (uncropped), and if no changes have been made, to activate the Cancel button ? This is so basic to my muscle memory! Thanks for all you do!

Hi Andy,

Can this, please, be added to the refine selection panel as well?  Using the sliders does is very intuitive if one wants to make a precise adjustment and up and down keys don't work for the set values.  In fact, one one highlights a value and presses the up arrow, the value increments by one and then loses focus.

You guys have done a great job on the Affinity Suite but it's just little things like that that takes away from productivity gains.

Keep up the good work.

Nana

Hi,

The first part of this is a good idea - ESC to reset. The second part would make the crop tool different to all other tools (ESC never cancels any other tool)..

Thanks,

A

Added TGA export.

Does this include the Alpha Channel many folks talk about? If so, then this is a great day for them.

:)

Best regards!

Except that there is a "special" mode that the tool takes one into, and there's an Apply and Cancel button in the Context toolbar, and I can press Return/Enter to Apply but I cannot press Esc to cancel, which is the universal key for Cancel. I suggest the first time one presses the Esc key, it resets the Crop rectangle to original canvas dimensions, and the second press of the Esc key takes one back to the previous tool used or the Arrow/Move tool.

Why even have an active Cancel button in the toolbar before any changes have been made using the tool? When I press Cancel without changing the defaukt Crop rectangle, AP swaps me back to the Move tool. Why? Seems inconsistent on a number of levels. Crop tool acts as more than a tool, it's almost like a mini-persona mode.

If you want to present it as a regular tool, then DON'T preselect the entire canvas; wait for the user to draw the crop rectangle desired. Otherwise it feels like one is in a mini-persona state, and as such, Esc ought to invoke the Cancel button, just like in every other instance when there is an Accept/Apply (Return/Enter key) or Cancel (Esc) choice to be made.

Thanks for your consideration and everything you do.

1. One thing I noticed when using the Selection tools: In the Context Toolbar, we have the handy Add and Subtract mode buttons. Of course we can press the Option key on the keyboard to temporarily alternate between Add and Subtract modes. It would be better UX if the buttons on the Context toolbar reflected this temporary switch between modes.

2. Additionally, when one presses the Refine… button, we are presented with the same options but they have been renamed Foreground and Background. Perhaps maintaining the Add and Subtract labels instead of renaming them Foreground / Background would maintain consistency and avoid confusion.

3. Some years back I made the following suggestion, and this speaks to a larger issue and opportunity: Selections are one of those super important and tedious parts of most image editing workflow. Affinity is uniquely poised to deliver a much better UX than the industry standard. AP certainly has all the tools and features, but they are spread out between the various tools in the tool palette and the context toolbar, and hidden behind the Refine... button. Consider leveraging the Persona concept and creating a Selection Persona where all the Selection tools and modes reside. This would be a game changer if executed properly.

Thanks for your consideration.

This is a very important step in the right direction, and the single most foundationally critical update in the list.  Hoping this philosophy carries forward to all other similar future changes.

The whole concept of trying to "apply" or "cancel" a tool is kind of off the beaten path to begin with.  You do that with a filter, not with a tool.

I think the "apply" should happen simply by switching to another tool, and "cancel" should be replaced with "reset" which is activated by "esc".

I had been following the Betas for all three Affinity apps prior to the release of the 1.7.1 store versions. I now own the 1.7.1 suite for Mac.

I would like to be able to test and follow the latest Beta versions of the Affinity apps. However, I notice that the old Betas I have installed (e.g., Photo 1.7.0.135) no longer launch, and instead present a challenge screen for a valid product key.

Questions:

  1. If I have purchased versions of the entire Affinity Suite 1.7.1 installed from the Apple App Store, can I run the latest Betas from the Affinity Suite without conflict with the store bought versions (1.7.1)?
  2. Is it necessary or advised to delete the old pre-1.7.1 beta apps in oder to install the latest beta apps, or is there a way to run an update from the pre-1.7.1 betas?
  3. If I must first delete the pre-1.7.1 betas before downloading and installing the post-1.7.1 betas, are there support files and system files associated with the old pre-1.7.1 betas that I must delete? If so, where are these support/system files located, and what are they titled? Are these support/system files clearly marked so that I don't accidentally delete support/system files for the store-bought 1.7.1 apps?

Thanks for your attention and assistance.

because 1.7.0 betas deliberately do not "recognise" later release builds. We do not want customers using superceeded beta builds when they have later release builds.

1. Yes they do not conflict and are independent installs

2. Is it necessary or advised to delete the old pre-1.7.1 beta apps in order to install the latest beta apps, or is there a way to run an update from the pre-1.7.1 betas?

2. The new beta will automatically offer to overwrite the earlier beta. As the earlier beta does not work anymore you would say yes. No need to uninstall first, but it does no harm if you have. There is no "update" mechanism (once the installed version is not recognised) The update mechanism is only if the beta is later than the release version.

3. You do not need to delete anything first or clean up any files.

A selection persona is something we have been thinking about for a while now - we expect to add it in the future :)

Andy.

Can't wait to see it! One more thing on the Crop tool: It would be really handy to allow the user to resize the crop area from the center by using the Option or Cmd or SOME keyboard equivalent. Oftentimes I find myself wanting to increase the size of a document evenly around all margins.... thanks for your consideration!
