Hokusai Posted March 21, 2018 Posted March 21, 2018 I made this piece as a part of a presentation that I had to make recently to a potential client. It is based on a woodblock print by Kuniyoshi and the original name of the print is Princess Takiyasha summons a skeleton spectre to frighten Mitsukuni. I've never seen an original print of this that was in good shape and I thought it was a shame because it is a very nice print so I decided to make my own version (with a few changes here and there). I hope you enjoy. Hokusai Chris B, peter, Celia at Grafted Works and 27 others 28 2 Quote
ONSO Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Really Nice Work — question if don't mind me asking. How did you get your images to show in your post and not as a attachment? Thanks Quote 15"-inch MacBook Pro, 2017, 2.9GHz Intel Core i7 | 16Gb
Hokusai Posted March 22, 2018 Author Posted March 22, 2018 ONSO, Thanks for the kinds words. At the bottom there is the option to either "Drag files here to attach, or choose files...." and I just clicked on the "choose files" and then added the images that I wanted to add. Hokusai Quote

ambiroa Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Ahhh I love Japanese art. Do you have a website @Hokusai? Quote
Hokusai Posted March 22, 2018 Author Posted March 22, 2018 Ros, I'm glad that you enjoyed my work. ambiroa, I do have a website but it isn't very good and to be honest, I would be embarrassed to post a link to it. I hope to redesign it soon and when I do, I'll post a link to it. I have posted another piece of Japanese themed art before, if you search here in the "Share your work" for The Siren, you'll find it. I will post some more Japanese themed work hopefully sometime soon. Thanks, Hokusai Quote

retrograde Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Okay, what's frightening "me" here is that insane amount of detail... great job! Looks like it was probably quite a challenge. Hokusai Posted March 23, 2018 Author Posted March 23, 2018 retrograde, Thanks for the kind comments and the funny word play too! This piece is based off of a print that was originally a triptych but the pieces don't all fit together exactly as they should. I had to create some elements from scratch that fit in with the original piece so that aspect of it was very challenging. Hokusai retrograde 1 Quote

Fatih19 Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Are you using a combination of Affinity Photo and Designer? Quote
Hokusai Posted March 29, 2018 Author Posted March 29, 2018 1 hour ago, Fatih19 said: Are you using a combination of Affinity Photo and Designer? Fatih19, No, I only used Designer. I do use Photo but normally for other things, for drawings I use Designer only. Hokusai uuxxaa 1 Quote
retrograde Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Funny, often when I try to start something in Photo I realize I can do this in Designer and switch back... :-) silly me of course but Designer can do everything I need it to. I even bought the Photo workbook but haven't really embraced Photo yet, Designer won't let me. Hokusai Posted March 29, 2018 Author Posted March 29, 2018 retrograde, I'm pretty much the same as you. Most of what I need to do, I can do in Designer. I like Photo, it is very powerful but for what I've been doing recently Designer can handle it. Plus I normally work with vectors more than raster images so Designer works out best for me. I do like Photo's Red Eye Removal tool though Hokusai retrograde 1 Quote

I do like Photo's Red Eye Removal tool though Hokusai :-) Yeah same here. I tend to use photo for colour correction and pixel based tweaks and adjustments... much of which can be done in designer. I come from a long history with illustrator so the vector side is home for me. DelN Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 Such beautiful detailed line work, and a wonderful earthy colour palette. Thank you for posting it. It just goes to show what exquisite and detailed work can be done in Affinity Designer. I love Japanese art, and have a few prints myself, which I got from the Japanese Gallery in London. It's a beautiful shop, with a lot of original prints of many traditional Japanese artworks: landscapes, Samurai, male and female figures, birds, animals, Kabuki... If you don't know it (or if you don't live in London), check out their website. I think it will inspire you... http://www.japanesegallery.co.uk/default.php?Sel=ppalcatalogue&Submenu=1 In the tradition of Hokusai, Sharaku, Utagawa... DelN PS. If you visit the website (or the shop), I'd love to hear what you think... 😀 uuxxaa 1 Quote
Hokusai Posted October 21, 2024 Author Posted October 21, 2024 Hi Uuxxaa, Thank you for the kind words! Sorry, I haven't posted anything new for a while. I have done many ukiyo-e recreations but I don't post them all as I worry that it would be too much! I'll try to get around to posting something new soon though. I love Affinity Designer it is a great tool to create wonderful art. Designer is much better, faster, and easier to use than anything else out there that I've seen. DelN, Thank you for the kind words too! The Japanese Gallery site looks good. I always enjoy seeing such a wide variety of prints. It is good to see that people are interested in original prints. Sadly I'm not located in the UK but if I make it that way, I'll be sure to stop in a check out the prints. I like the Yoshitoshi prints! I have seen many prints over the years and I even own a few originals myself and probably a couple that are old reproductions (reproduced in the 1890's or so). I feel lucky that I was able to see the full series of Hokusai's original prints for the 36 views of Mt Fuji a few years ago (all 46 prints). I highly recommend it if you get the chance. Best regards, Hokusai uuxxaa 1 Quote
