Licorne Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Hi there, i often need to convert pixel selections into a vector path. I know that Photoshop has the function. So im wondering, how i can do that in Affinity? At the moment i need to make a pixel selection with the tool to free the object or i draw a path manually around the object. What i need to do, is to create a pixel selection an convert it to a vector path... Ist this possible? If not, is there a workaround for this? thank you for a answer Licorne nodeus and GeGr 2 Quote
gdenby Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Hi, Licorne, At present, Affinity Designer doesn't have the function. It requires auto tracing, which is planned by v 2.0 according to the road map. Depending on what you are trying to do, using various pixel selection tools, and then using the refine edge command will allow output of separate layers, or masks fro the selection. Those can then be used for fx, adjustments and blends. But the shape will remain a fixed proportion. PixelPest Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Not sure if this will help - but GIMP can make SVG files of every selection. Cheers P. predick, ESPR, Licorne and 1 other 4 Quote

PixelPest Posted May 5, 2017 Posted May 5, 2017 Autotracing won´t help here much. As I said GIMP can export any pixel-selection from raster images to SVG - while for instance Inkscape or SuperVectorizer2 will autotrace only the entirety picture. Cheers P. ESPR 1 Quote
Staff MEB Posted May 5, 2017 Staff Posted May 5, 2017 Hi Licorne, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) This is already in Affinity Designer's roadmap. It may then be eventually ported to Photo as well. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
Telmo Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 Is this ever going to happen ? BTW , why doesn't Affinity Designer have magic wand selection tool on bitmaps ? These are totally basic features... Quote
edferg Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 I also need to convert Affinity Photo selections to a vector path. Any progress to report on this feature? Quote
PfauKontur Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 This is one of the few features I miss in AP, too. Will be much appreciated. Quote
luzule Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 Would need this too ! Would make possible to finally quit PS for Affinity Photo Quote
SlavaUX Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Any progress on this? I need this almost on every time I use Designer Quote
Boldlinedesign Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 Aww man - I was trying to flip a selection back to a path for tighter editing... was hoping this was a possibility already Quote

pluggedbean Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 I cant seem to find any sort of roadmap and i take it that this is still not a available feature? It's really disappointing as it seems like such a basic feature? I used to use this in Fireworks almost 15 Years ago. Can we expect to see this some time in the future? Quote
Staff MEB Posted September 21, 2020 Staff Posted September 21, 2020 Hi @pluggedbean, Welcome to Affinity Forums This feature is still not available. We don't publish the roadmap anymore. Check the Beta's release notes/logs for information about what's coming (in the Betas section of the Forums). Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

I do hope the devs over at Serif will consider this feature for the 1.x series. It's one of those things that I as a raster artist can't really live without. Currently I use Inkscape to compensate for this shortcoming in Affinity, but it would improve the workflow and overall value of Affinity Designer immensely from this single feature for what I like to do with vector art (i.e. converting my sketch drawings into something that can be reused to save a lot of time for a finished product). pluggedbean and roble2020 2 Quote
pluggedbean Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 @ Frozen Death Knight - I totally agree, and thank you for the info on inkscape! I have only been using Affinity design for a month or 2 now and must say I am really impressed so i'm not putting the product or team behind it down I just feel moving away from a very old application I was expecting this new modern day graphic application to pack more and better features than what i had with "Macromedia Fireworks" I really hope this feature will be considered in future releases. Jiri L Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 For years I have been looking forward to leaving Adobe. But without this feature it is meaningless for me, it would only mean much much more work. Sometimes I forget how great actually Photoshop etc are, even though it is expensive and overcombined. I do wish Affinity had some really basic feature such as this. Quote

roble2020 Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Also looking for this functionality. Overall I'm very happy with Affinity products, but don't understand how the dev team have been able to ignore this, or bump off the roadmap, for so long. Clearly users are regularly looking for it. Quote
