Just came looking for this, and v2.0 is out.  The feature list says "Convert shapes to selections" but doesn't mention the other way around.  Does it exist?  Surely it does, six years after this thread started?

Surprisingly it sort of "does" for quite a few years already, albeit via Publisher only, and it's very "crude". But it may work well enough for a bunch of specific scenarios: 

 

MacBookPro9,1: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 9th: iPadOS 15.7.2 > Affinity v2

Thanks for the reply MEB.  The selection by colour was really accurate when I used it, I would have thought converting the selection area into a path would be the easier of the two parts.  Anyway, wait I shall.
