  1. Hello, as the title says, Publisher 1.10.4 will crash every time I try to open my file. Using Mojave as OS. I tried all possible solutions found in the forum and nothing works: copied the file, moved to another folder, updated Publisher to 10.5, uninstall, reinstall to 10.4, reset PRAM, open the file with Affinity Photo and nothing. I sent a copy to a friend and her Windows version showed an error saying the file has characteristics from an older version of Publisher that can't be read so I'm staying with the 10.4 version for now. Attached the corrupted file and a copy of the error report, plus the installed fonts I'm using, mentioning preflight warns for missing the fine variable no matter how many times I reinstall the font family. Thank you for your attention. Tesis 05.afpub reporte01.rtf Alegreya_Sans.zip
  2. Oh, yeah, that makes sense! I found out about variable fonts just today. This is also good to know. I think I already did install some variable + static ones, now I know what to do, when I come across such a conflict! thank you!
  3. You can also try clicking the More button and Not subsetting the fonts. Also, make sure you are not using the variable version of that font but instead only have the distinct styles installed.
  4. (It would indeed be interesting to discuss variable fonts … elsewhere. While this new technology is currently drawing a lot of attention in the type design world, I am still not sure whether it will have the resounding success that is hoped for in the typographers’ world. I haven’t seen any variable fonts yet that would really convince me of their typographic benefit over a well-developed typeface with optical grades. Pointers are welcome. Furthermore, as variable fonts tend to lay the burden on the user to proceed with taste – at least unless they are not using predefined locations in the design space –, I have the slight fear there might be another wave of bad typography on the horizon. Somehow, the current developments remind me of the early times when DTP on personal computers started off. But to discuss this further, let’s make a different thread.)
  5. This font is a variable base one and we currently do not support these types of fonts, this feature has been requested but I do not know when this will be added to the apps.
  6. In that case, though, the bold would not show in the original Affinity document, either. (But also, even if it did show in Affinity, it would not show in the PDF because PDF doesn't support variable fonts, either.)
  7. You have been bitten by the "Affinity does not support Variable Fonts" bug. Variable fonts like this one are not supported by any of the Affinity applications.
  8. Yes, it seems to me variable fonts show up in Affinity, but only at one predefined setting. Hopefully, in the future we can adjust width and thickness of the fonts. By the way, here's a company who makes free variable fonts. https://www.etceteratype.co/
  9. Just bumping this thread as I'm finding that both colour and variable fonts are increasingly entering my workflow. Not being able to work with them in Affinity products seems like a massive oversight for a suite of modern, professional design tools. FWIW both Sketch and Pixelmator have both implemented (albeit varying) support for both variable and colour fonts, and of course A___e still have varying support for both across their suite of applications.
  10. Please note that the the download from Google Fonts includes a variable font which is not supported by the Affinity apps. You need to install the individual fonts from the ‘static’ folder that you’ll find when you extract the contents of the downloaded zip archive. The dates for the versions on DaFont and Font Squirrel suggest that they may be older, but I haven’t downloaded them to check the version numbers.
  11. Font-Technology is developing. Make Variable- and Color-Fonts available, please.
  12. I do not think there is any way to get just the variable font version from Google Fonts, so by using the "Download Family" button & unzipping the download, I would think it would be hard to miss the "static" folder ... or for that matter the "README" file that among other things explains what that folder includes & why.
  13. Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, @V. Novikov. The problem will remain until Serif releases a new version (a free update or a paid-for upgrade) that includes support for variable fonts.
  14. I couldn't figure out how to get an accurate manual selection of font weights in Publisher to do: Thin= 100 Extra-Light (Ultra-light) = 200 Light = 300 Roman (Normal, Regular, Current) = 400 Medium = 500 Semi-Bold (Demi-Bold) = 600 Bold= 700 Extra-Bold (Ultra-Bold) = 800 Black (Heavy) = 900 Extra-black (Ultra-Black) = 950 (I noticed a few days ago that Publishers does not support variable fonts. This is a serious shortcoming, and I imagine Serif will correct this quickly, as many other software packages now manage them, especially since variable fonts are often not very expensive compared to the full sets of other fonts. I think this will be a strong signal for large companies who are still hesitant about the Affinity suite.).
  15. Here's one from the a site I read sometimes for various layout questions: https://creativepro.com/variable-fonts-in-indesign/ This article requires a subscription to see more than the intro, but in any case it is an example article about the feature when it was new to InDesign. CreativePro was formerly known as InDesignSecrets.com
  16. Hi @Henry N, Thanks for your report! As Psenda has linked to above, it may be the specific font files in use causing this issue. Another option is that this is a 'Variable Font', which unfortunately the Affinity applications don't support at this time. Do you recall where these fonts were acquired from?
  17. Did you use the variable or the static version? If variable, weird things can happen as we don't currently support Variable Fonts.
  18. Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums. Bahnschrift is a variable font, and they are not supported in the Affinity applications. You'll need to pick a non-variable font. For Bold: Try Arial, and see if it's available there. In general, Bold is available in the Affinity applications only in fonts that support it.
  19. Nothing wrong with the fonts. Nothing wrong with the kerning in either the static or the variable fonts. Looks like a combination of operator error and confusion caused by Mac not following specs (again).
  20. I didn´t recommend this font at all when apps don´t support its feature set. Affinity shows/handles them as "static" fonts but kerning goes haywire - so no advantage for variable fonts here.
  21. I'm guessing you installed the Variable version, rather than the standard fonts?
  22. Ghostscript is typically installed under /usr/local/bin (under version specific sub folders) where it can be launched by typing gs in the prompt of the Terminal app (Ghostscript does not have a graphical user interface of its own). The above mentioned installation location is typically added in the PATH environment variable so that the execution path does not need to be specified when typing Ghostscropt commands. [You might want to remove additional Ghostscript versions that you installed and then re-install the latest version; personally I am still running version 9.50 but later versions might work equally well; for some reason I could not make the homebrew version work on my M1 system.] You can type in the following command, replacing the filename parameters with actual filenames (enclosed in quotation marks) in the Terminal prompt to flatten fonts within a PDF: gs -o <destinationpdf> -dNoOutputFonts -sDEVICE=pdfwrite <sourcepdf> PDF Output Preview, mentioned, above, is just a front end app that executes the above mentioned command allowing the user to select the PDF and then saves the flattened PDF in the folder of the source PDF appending "_nofonts" in the filename body, after which the PDF is shown in the default PDF viewer of the system.
