Staff Gabe Posted April 17, 2020 Staff Posted April 17, 2020 I'm afraid we don't have an update on this issue. Sorry. Quote
Welkin Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 Temporarily or never? This issue will affect all CJK users. If it is not resolved, CJK users will not be able to use the text function normally. If you do not consider solving this problem in the future, I recommend that all Chinese, Japanese, and Korean users refund the software(s) cause this problem exists in Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher. Just in case, there is a workaround provided by @Wosven, linked a few posts up, which involves using Find & Replace and regular expressions... Perhaps it can be helpful or informative to the devs? ashf Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 I posted this in another topic before, this is find&replace action for Japanese line breaking rules. Ask me if you want me to translate this. or ask @omachi who is the author of article.https://cs5.xyz/blog/2019/07/affinity1.html loyukfai 1 Quote
Distill7 Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 @loyukfai People speaking different languages have expressed the desire to use Affinity products with their non latin languages over and over again. Especially right to left languages like Arabic and Hebrew. The problem is that Affinity needs a text shaping engine for complex languages, currently there are 3 main ones: core text from apple, uniscribe/directwrite from microsoft and harfbuzz (open source but mainly managed by google). As you can see, it's not a simple task and only the biggest tech companies in the world Apple/Microsoft/Google that create operating systems have the ability to create such complex systems. Unfortunately Serif has a small team and they can't in anyway create a fully operational text shaping engine for the many languages of the world in the near or far future. We have advised them to use HarfBuzz since it's ready and open source but they refused to. Even more, one of their stuff directly expressed that they don't want to use any third party app for the text engine, but they can't develop one too and it'll require a lot of time, so they dropped it from their to do list altogether to work on other things. They want to focus on Latin scripts only. And to be honest I don't know what to say or do after that statement. loyukfai 1 Quote

As far as I am aware this was dropped from the list because it is going to take longer than anything else. Staff Patrick Connor Posted April 18, 2020 Staff Posted April 18, 2020 Japanese and other Asian language punctuation problems are something that we would aim to fix, and is hopefully achievable in 1.x (as I understand it). Right to left language support is something that will require a lot more work than this fix, lynzrand, ꜱᴩʀɪᴛᴇ➀, loyukfai and 1 other 4 Quote Patrick Connor Serif Europe Ltd Latest V2 releases on each platform Help make our apps better by joining our beta program! Great. line breaking rules are minimum requirement as publishing/printing software. Even if we put vertical writing feature aside, Affinity is useless as publishing/printing software for horizontal writing as well. Current state is less usable than simple word processor(or even text editor), people are being so disappointed after they tried Affinity. loyukfai 1 Quote
ashf Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 @Patrick Connor Please refer Illustrator's Paragraph panel also. There is Kinsoku Set(line breaking rules) and Mojikumi Set(word spacing rules) that's important both of them. You need to enable East Asian option in Preferences>Type to see this feature. ashf Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 @Patrick Connor Do you already have one who can implement Asian vertical writing or still looking for? Quote
loyukfai Posted April 29, 2020 Author Posted April 29, 2020 Given there are so many text shaping issues which can be potentially fixed by using an existing MIT licensed engine and increase the appeal of the Affinity line to the other 2/3 of the world of which English is not the primary language, I wonder why Serif doesn't go that way... What am I missing? Perhaps those engines ain't sophisticated enough to be used in the Affinity line? BTW, how will a Kickstarter campaign work in these cases? We collect $$$ for Serif to fix their programs? Are they willing to take it in? Cheers. Quote
