Elsea reacted to walt.farrell in .tif instead of .tiff for round trip export
Not completely true, Dan, at least on Windows
During Export, a Windows user exporting a TIFF file sees something like this as the filename in the File Explorer dialog:
unnamed.tiff
If the user simply types somename.tif then Affinity Photo recognizes that the user wants to use the .tif extension, and saves it as a .tif instead of .tiff.
Also, if one Opens a .tif file, and then saves it (Ctrl+S) it is saved as the original name.tif.
If I remember correctly someone confirmed in another thread that this does not work on Mac, making it a Windows-only function.
(Back then, I was initially going to propose the standard Windows-based accomodation for this, using quote marks ("somename.tif"}, but I found that Affinity didn't need the quotes.)

Elsea reacted to R C-R in Vector brushes in Affinity Photo
The message itself is accurate -- the brushes are in fact imported successfully -- but they are inaccessible because there is no vector tool in Affinity Photo that can use them, so Affinity Photo never should have allowed the import in the first place. That's the bug.
I only mention this because the imported brushes are added to an existing Affinity Photo support file & therefore use file space you might want to reclaim for something more useful. I don't know of any way to do this from within Affinity Photo itself, but there is a way to do this on Macs, & probably an equivalent way on Windows.
The basic procedure is to quit Affinity Photo (important!), then find & delete the support file. On the next launch of Affinity Photo, it will automatically create a new file that amounts to a minimum sized placeholder.
On Macs, the name of the file is vector_brushes.propcol. (I assume the propcol extension stands for property collection or something like that.) It is one of the several files in the ~/Library/Containers/com.seriflabs.affinityphoto/Data/Library/Application Support/user/ folder, where the ~/ prefix is the standard UNIX abbreviation for the user home folder. Note that if you have Affinity Designer installed, there is file of the same name at a similar location, so make sure you navigate to the Photo one & don't delete the Designer one by mistake, because that is where all your Designer vector brushes are stored!
A simple way to get to this folder on Macs is to use the "Go to Folder" item on Finder's "Go" menu, & enter the folder path name just as it appears above, or even simpler to copy it from this post & paste it into the text field in Finder. (Finder understands the ~/ prefix.) Click the "Go" button, locate the vector_brushes.propcol file in the Finder window, & drag it to the trash. You can then launch Affinity Photo & it will create the minimum sized placeholder file. Empty the Trash to finish reclaiming the space & your are done.
The procedure for Windows should be the same, but obviously the folder location won't have the same path name.

Elsea reacted to Dan C in This really can't be the right size, well?
Thanks for your files, I've looked through and most of this is to be expected. When developing images into 32bit we expect the file size to be much larger, and as mikerofoto has mentioned converting the file to 8bit and deleting the snapshot will reduce the file-size drastically.
I developed your Basics image into 16bit without making changes and saved the file at 217MB. I then converted the file and deleted the snapshot and saved it as a new file at 54.3MB.
I'd recommend reading the following thread, as our developers went into great detail regarding our proprietary file size

Elsea reacted to mikerofoto in This really can't be the right size, well?
AP File size developed images (400MB)
This is typically because developed raw images are processed to 16-bit - it offers more precision but increases file size exponentially. Before you save your .afphoto file, you might try the following:
Go to Document > Colour Format > RGB (8 bit) to convert the image to 8-bit and save file space.
Go to View > Studio > Snapshots to bring up the snapshots panel. You should see an initial "Background" snapshot. Delete this as it's essentially a backup copy of your image that takes up file size space.

Hi Elsea
This doesn't seem quite right, I've tested this with a .CR2 RAW (31.6MB), developed and saved as a .afphoto the file is 160MB, which is to be expected.
Could you please upload a copy of your RAW file and the .afphoto file to the link below?

Elsea reacted to Loquos in Let's be honest
Even Adobe InDesign isn't word processing software. It's layout software. Affinity Publisher still has spellcheck - which Designer and Photo have as well - and several handy orphan features. It took Adobe forever to add their spellcheck feature to Illustrator. I'd say Affinity is still ahead of the game.

Yea it's called Bilateral Blur. It can be accessed from Filters > Blur > Bilateral Blur... or by clicking the Live Filters button on the Layers Panel.
Hope this helps!

Elsea got a reaction from HaroldDah in LEGACY: Official Affinity Photo (Desktop) Video Tutorials
I love the tutorials and always do what is told with the video, I take a screen take and use that to apply.. Works mostly sufficient, but.. in a video as today the screentake is to blurry to have aliasing edges. So I wonder, is it possible to download that file somewhere for a better quality in doing the practice?
Overal, thank you very much for these videos, I watch them reguarly over and over again. Nice voice and way of talking too.

OK, a new video for the weekend: Raw Conversion Quality
This one is quite close to my heart (!) as I see a lot of criticism over Photo's raw development quality. This video aims to tackle why that seems to be the case (Photo does not automatically clean up and refine raw images) and talks you through some procedures that you can use generally for every image in order to get a good result.
Have a good weekend,
James

Elsea reacted to Callum in rotation of image in RAW mode
Hi David4
There was some issues with the rotate commands in the Develop Persona, so they've been temporarily removed. Our developers will bring them back at a later date when they're working correctly.
In the meantime, you will have to Develop the image and then use Document > Rotate.... in the Photo Persona to rotate the image.

Elsea reacted to crabtrem in To all my fellow noobs, it's okay to share your work.
As I look through all the outstanding work on the share your work section, I feel more like an amateur than ever. But that is okay, because I am one. This is my work so far. It is not anywhere in the class of so many outstanding works of art. I am still relying heavily on photo reference. I try to concentrate on a new style or technique with each project. I am not sure why I am even sharing my work, except maybe to give more noobs like me the emphasis that it is okay to go ahead and share your work with this community.
I am hoping more of you that share your work, will also make tutorials too. Half the battle for me is I know where I want to get, but organizing the path to get there is the real battle. Clever uses of blend modes, opacity, the clever uses of vector brushes or various fills for shading and reflections, all top my list of goals I wish to achieve.
I am no professional, and have no real training. Just learning as I go. I learn a lot every time I participate in these forums. So I decided to share some screen shots too.
And thanks to the Affinity team for finally providing the tools I actually feel comfortable and inspired with.

Elsea reacted to dhayton in Making a Vintage Photo
I wanted to try giving a recent photo a vintage look. I had watched a photoshop tutorial at phlearn.com: phlearn.com/create-vintage-photo-photoshop (you can download the distressed papers from that tutorial). I wanted to try to do something similar with Affinity photo. I thought I would share my process for others:
A quick note:
—I should have mentioned that all my adjustments are below the gradient map so that the map colors all the adjustments (border, spots & textures, etc).
—at about 5:50 in the video I select an irregular brush: you find those irregular brushes by choosing the "Texture" option from the drop-down menu in the brushes palette.
Thanks for watching.

Thank you!
You're all welcome!
This is a quick and dirty sample made using the 2B Shading small and 2B Sharpened
The 2B sharpened features size jitter with Angle variation, strokes are more dynamic and both sketching and results feel more "analog".
Paper texture embedded comes from an hi-res scan, made seamless to avoid tiling issues.
But now let me see some of your art pieces!
