Based on the hints from the Affinity folks here, it sounds like they are working on adding this.
Which is welcome news.
So it appears they listened to the requests, and everyone just needs to be patient.

Or they already were working on that (after all, this is an early beta!) & from the beginning planned on supporting it in one way or another, like maybe with a 'show hidden' button, or maybe even changing this to a dedicated studio panel like some have suggested.

The initial comments did not sound that way, but you may be right.

I'm unsure whether this is covered under:

  • AF-2910 - Variable Font - All axes visible when they shouldn't be

But on Windows with Roboto Flex, the five registered axes are shown in both the context toolbar and the character panel but all thirteen axes are shown in the Text Style Editor...

On the opposite Side - on iPad you can’t adjust non of the axes when creating a new Text Style…? Bug?

I can. I only see the 5 non-hidden axes, but they accept adjustments. What problem are you having?

strange?

Same place (text styles), but when I point at this V it show nothing, not even one axes…

Perhaps this is connected to several versions of Roboto Flex flowing around?

I’ll delete this and install another Roboto Flex.

Thanks for checking this.

I think it's the same issue because if you create a new doc, create a style, and choose Roboto Flex Regular, you'll only be able to see the five axes.

No great surprise but on my Mac I see all 13 axes in the text Styles editor, same as with in the 'v' dropdown.

In Windows 11 in Publisher, the variable font icon in the top bar is moved down by 1 pixel compared to the other font icons, i.e. B, I, U, and the V icon in the button is blurred and darker than the letters B, I, U. Please correct it. And the variable font icon in the Character panel (the letter V) is very small (it does not match the other font icons at all). Please correct that too.

In Windows 11, the mouse wheel does not work in Publisher when changing values on the variable font axes. Font changes are not shown in real time. They turn the wheel on the value, the value changes but it is not reflected in the font. When you manually move the slider on the axis, the font changes in real time, but when you turn the wheel on the value - the font does not change anymore. Please correct it.

On my Mac, the scroll wheel equivalent (the scroll ring on my Kensington Expert Mouse) does change the axis values in real time but the slider position does not update until I close & reopen the 'v' dropdown button (a known bug).

BTW, what is the official name for that button? All the others on the context toolbar have a tooltip name but it does not.

Good catch. It's named the "Font Variations" button in the Character panel but is missing a tooltip in the Context Toolbar.

The tooltip name is missing on the context toolbar on Macs. In the Character panel, the button is named but the icon is misshapen, at least on my Mac:

Well it is a button for variable fonts, it's just stretched on the Width axis. 🙂

It's okay for me on Sonoma.

To me it looks compressed to just a few pixels wide, not stretched, however, after toggling between the light & dark UI options & making a slight change in the document I was testing it with, now in both the Light & Dark UI it looks like in your screenshot.

Weird!

Changes in this week's 2.5.0.2430 build (and a hint for next week's)

- Fixed several UI glitches with Variation Axis controls (All Platforms)
- Fixed crash if .affont files installed (Windows)
- Fonts installed via Creative Cloud cannot be found (Windows)
- Localised font names not showing when desired (e.g. Chinese) (Windows)
- Addition of font type identification icons on the fonts list (Desktop)
- New font filters for Opentype TrueType and Variable (Desktop)

Change which is still being ironed out, but will be available soon
- The 'rvrn' Required Variation Alternates feature handled better  (All Platforms)

The sliders work much nicer in today's beta, now they update the numbers in real time.

The revised position of the Font Variations icon in the context toolbar is much better, thanks.

[EDIT - I made a mistake] If you open the variations popup for text that is formatted with a hidden axis (because you imported text that was formatted as such, or in this case, formatted it with the previous beta), some of the regular axes disappear. On the left is Roboto Flex Regular and on the right is text formatted with YTLC - the order of three axes is changed while Grade and Slant are missing entirely.

I don't love the revised Font Variations icon - the tick marks make it noisy. Is there an option to hide the icon tick marks? 🙂
