This happened to me just this morning. The place to look is the Layer Properties. Right click on the Layer, choose Properties at the bottom. You will then see the Layer Color option.

Here's a plain perspective grid sample, you've to size it to your needs (best only via modifying the top layer and transform panel) and also color and apply gradients to your needs.

I think a combination of the two above suggestions gives an half decent result :

In addition to the method given above you can also:
create your shape; duplicate the shape; add a Blur Effect to the duplicate; add a Transparency gradient to the duplicate from left-to-right; add a Transparency gradient to the original from right-to-left. See attached image.

I'm thinking more in terms of drawing a shadow. Let's say we have a black shape which will be a long shadow, on one end of the shadow I want it to have a well defined sharp edge and on the other end I want it to get gradually more blurry. I'm thinking the Gaussian Blur could be modified to achieve this. 
If anyone can do this another way please let me know.

Its a toolbar under the main static Toolbar (along the top) that changes it context depending on what tool you have selected, basically, a new toolbar with different settings for every tool.

Please add better stroke width control. I attempted to use Affinity Designer for complex character lineart with the pressure graph tool. Unfortunately, it works only in simple cases. When many points are added it gets incredibly fiddly to change things or to even understand which point I have to move for editing. Not to mention the pressure graph often bugging out completely in complex situations either with points merging for no reason or point not moving at all and me having to close it down and turn it back up. The current solution is simply not good enough for many complex cases.
Moho Pro 12 (previously called Anime Studio Pro) has a great tool for this, simply called "line width tool". Here you can see it in action: 
 
Even Illustrator's version of this would be good to have: 
Just do something, please. Threads about his have been around for ages. In 2015 it was mentioned as being worked on yet it never landed. Only silence. No mentions of this improvement on the roadmap. This is such a fundamental missing feature that keeps me away from using Designer.

The destructive Add produced an object with Winding fill mode. Layer > Fill Mode > Alternate will change that to the result you expected.
However, destructive Boolean operations in the current Affinity apps are more bug-ridden than the non-destructive Compound alternative, so you'll often need to use a Compound even when you want a destructive result. A Compound can be converted to a single Curve or Curves object by Layer > Convert To Curves.
