Introduce Yourself

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm Jose, a long time, old graphic designer since...  Aldus Freehand 3.0  :)

I'm until now a satisfied Adobe CC suite user, but since I downloaded the "tryout" version of Affinity Designer, I decided to give it an opportunity.

Affinity is really an amazing breath of fresh air, and I'll love it, I'm sure!

Greetings from Spain!!

Hello, I'm David. I've been buying and using Adobe Photoshop since version 3.0. I use Photoshop pretty much everyday, though not in a professional capacity. The news of an Affinity Photo product is welcome news. I tested Affinity Designer and liked it, though it was not what I needed. So I look forward to testing and hopefully buying the Photo application from Affinity because I want to cut my dependence on Adobe since I won't use the subscription model.

Hello all,

I'm Wayne.

Affinity Designer happens to be the first application of this type that I have enjoyed using. I design websites and have never looked forward to using applications to design illustrations or graphics until now, so thanks for that first of all.

I love creating things on my Mac, and now having Affinity Designer I can actually do it for fun now. Love the tutorials and issue 1 of the digital magazine is a fantastic read and resource.

Hello Everyone, my name is Hanzz. I am a caricaturist from Belgium.

I used to work with all serif products on  windows.

After migrating to Mac, there was only one regret... The Serif products, especially page plus and Draw plus.

Sure, there are good products out there,..... but not with the Serif touch...

How great was my joy when I found out this package ! I cannot wait untill I hear more news on the Publisher !

Hi Hanzz. Welcome to the forum. Glad to see you're a fellow DrawPlus and PagePlus fan. You are absolutely right about the Serif touch. The moment I found Affinity was a sign that, as I've said elsewhere...My Mac feels complete. :D Be greedy, enjoy Serif and Affinity, I do!

There is a post elsewhere that explains the split loyalties between Draw/Photo/PagePlus and Affinity.

Well thanks to the Bootcamp and rEFIting dual booting options on the Mac: combined with the option to export as PDF, all your Serif files can be used in AD. Export has to be used as AD was never designed to directly read Serif's files. It's a good compromise, though you will want to see some DP features in AD. This is why you should follow the AD roadmap.

Here you will find less tools and features than in Serif. However, the pen tool is so much slicker over here in AD. As is the zoom tool, power duplicate and the forum is really amazing.

Enjoy

peter

The program is a blast ! I'm having heeps of fun, just been playing with bitmapfills, I'm so going to love the program !

The caricature is a sample of my work, I was testing stuff, to see how to make a poster for a show of my work.

The other shapes just came up, inspired by the great work displayed in the webste.

So far for showing off, I will post more once I have a decent picture....

Hi All,

I am an Affinity user for 3 weeks now. I must say I am more than pleasantly surprised about the quality of this app, being a 1.0 incarnation. Being a long time Xara Designer Pro user, I have decided to prolong my efforts with Affinity Designer. It is heartwarming to see the commitment of the early adopters to the success of this app and hopefully the forthcoming sister/brother apps.

Just read the review of Affinity Designer in the US version of MacLife, which I fully underline. Their verdict: “awesome" and granted Affinity Designer their MacLIfe Editors’ Choice mark. Keep on the good work and your dedication to the user community.

And a healthy and fun 2015 to all of you.

Amazing pixel skill. The hair is so realistic. How did you do it?

A brush mith multiple dots, and variable opacity did the trick in no time... ;)

I used to work in Artrage, but now I'm only working with Mischief and Manga studio 5

Thanks Hanzz, I see Mischief was acquired by The Foundry recently. Hopefully that means it'll get some more options/features. I tried Mischief and Manga Studio a while back, MS has a nice natural media feel to it as well.

Was that caricature above done in Designer? I'm thinking of trying something similar with an all painting workflow, any chance of us getting a closer view?  Cheers!

No, the caricature was just a picture imported, to find out what I can do with the edges of pictures, to combine them in a picture... well, playing actually.....having fun..

But I'm as well planning on trying something like doing a caricature in Designer.

Hey all,

I am a novice in Illustrator and I have mostly used the pen tool so far. I am in a graphics design class in high school, and when looking to purchase Adobe Illustrator, I have seen that the price is very expensive. Currently I'm using a 30-day trial of AI over the winter break and I am comparing it to a 10-day trial of Affinity Designer. I am seriously considering purchasing Affinity Designer for its low price. I am also considering a graphic art/designing career. On paper I'm fairly good at drawing but I am having difficulty on these programs. Currently I have a wacom tablet with a drawing space around 5" x 3.6" that my dad gave me.

Probably not the best place to ask, but is there a way to get rid of one of the handles on an anchor point? In AI,  I think I click the anchor point to remove it but on AD I haven't found out how. (Sorry if I'm not using correct terminology and this is confusing haha)

Thanks for any help!

Hello DemiAsian,

Welcome to Affinity Forums.

Glad to see students picking Affinity Designer and giving it a try.

Here you can find some resources/links that can help you to get started.

To get rid of an anchor point press alt and click on the anchor you want to remove (works for both Pen and Node Tool).

If you have any trouble, just ask away. There's many members/developers around willing to help.

Have fun!

Hello to all at Affinity - I am Gryphon Art AKA Carole – you have no idea how glad I am to be here – found you through a post on a Free–Freehand Facebook Page just today.

I am a Graphic Designer in Bermuda – throughout my career I have worked in Fine Printing, Newspapers and Advertising Agencies - run my own Advertising Agency for many years now and now creating digital art which I have printed to fabrics.

I am a FreeHand user from version 7 – never grasped Ai and feel too old to try again now - I had looked at Quasado Gravit but lost hope there and now I have just upgraded my computer (after keeping it old for Freehand) so am back looking at different options as I’m worrying that Freehand in the Virtual Box isn’t going to work for me.

I have some questions which I haven’t found answers to and I’d like to add to some things that others have requested so will do that in the Questions Forum I guess?

I am ThoughtSalsa. Affinity has earned my respect! Illustrator has taken my money for the last time!! I bought a Mac one year ago and, until today, have had to endure the foibles of my old PC and Illustrator CS4 to do any work. HOORAY!! Today I am made whole - with my MAC and AFFINITY!

Hi All,

Just bought the software and so far love it...though I can't wait for curved text features.

I used to work in the Serif call centre in Nottingham for a short period in the days when they gave it away with PC magazines...

Cheers!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

So at the risk of repeating what MEB said. Stick with AD, browse the forum and see the levels of work. All levels of ability are showcased here.

Then when you like what you see, goto the pumpkin tutorial and see how CartoonMike has put his unique twist on learning. You will pick up AD very quickly.

Hi I am Henrik

I am a software developer and a photographer. I am so happy to see the works of Affinity Designer.

I am pretty sure I will end up owning all three products when they are released.

Affinity Designer, for my graphics (I use Xara designer now, because it is really good, and I can avoid using Adobe Illustrator).

Affinity Photo, for my photo editing (I use Aperture, Pixelmator and Photoshop. Aperture because it is good, Pixelmator to avoid Photoshop, and Photoshop when I have no other choices)

Affinity Publisher, for my documents. ( I use Pages for mac, because it fits 80% of my needs. And I can avoid .... )

I can't wait to see Affinity Photo, if the quality of the program is as good as Affinity Designer, we finally have an alternative to Adobe. I try to avoid Adobe as much as possible. Adobe is the market leader. No doubt. But the i do not find the software a joy to work with.

I may be the only photographer on this plant who do not enjoy Lightroom and Photoshop. The apps are powerful no doubt about that, but I find that the software has too many features in places that are illogic for me. And because I spend time developing software between shoots. I can't remember where the features are placed in Photoshop. I simply just can't remember.

I have the same issues with Adobe Indesign. I can't remember how to use the software. XARA on the other hand is much more user friendly for me. I love how easy it is to create a shadow in Xara, and I hope to see that feature in Affinity Designer as well.

I simply can't wait to see Affinity Photo. Hope it is more user friendly for me than Adobe Photoshop.
