Rylek reacted to Mike Perry in GREP find/replace
Ah yes, it's easy to spot heavy users of InDesign like myself. We absolutely love ID's GREP abilities, keeping in mind that doesn't just mean sophisticated text replacements. It also includes the ability deal with paragraph and text styles as well as an app's other formatting features, searching and replacing those too. The book drafts I work with run to hundreds of pages and, being scientific in nature, make heavy use of italics. I need the ability to import Word documents, retaining all the italic formatting that doesn't use the italic text style. I then need to be able to change those hundreds of italic fonts into an italic text style. With ID's GREP that's easy. I search for italic fonts and replace them with an italic style. Only then can I begin to do the layout in earnest.
GREP has other marvelous time-saving advantages. Science texts often come to me with hyphens for page ranges that need to become N-dashes. Looking for every hyphen in a book would be a pain. GREP allows me to search only for hyphens that are bordered on both sides by numbers.

Rylek reacted to Seneca in GREP find/replace
I would like to add my strong +1 to get this feature added to Affinity Publisher. This is especially useful with character styles as seen in inDesign. I completely agree with the quote above by gaspar_schott. I use this feature all the time and it's just great and an incredible a time saver. In fact the problems shown above in the Polish and the Czech language could be solved by one grep rule in the paragraph style.

Rylek reacted to musiberti in My Big Reasons I'm Looking to Switch from InDesign to Publisher
No, the opposite is the case. In a document with many pages you will lose the overview quickly when you are working only with the existing local layers. Almost every professional Layouter works with "global layers", otherwise you will have to unnecessarily perform many simple actions several times . Luckily, Affinity has already announced in the forum that they are working on global layers. As I understand it, the "local" layers will remain as well. So everyone has the opportunity to use his preferred workflow. In the end, we would have even more options than in InDesign.

Rylek reacted to mac_heibu in Use of Scanner
My 2 cents: It always has been an „unwritten law“ in DTP, to place images just by linking them. Embedding images by using „drag and drop“ or direct scanning causes many issues and has serious drawbacks. I personally don‘t see any reason, why scanning directly into a document should make sense. I say this, although I am aware, that the image handling of „Publisher“ (unembed, transfer to „AffPhoto“, …) reduces some possible issues. Nevertheless: If you want control about your document and the integrated assets, you should always link images instead of embedding them.

Rylek reacted to Arte in Books option like InDesign for Publisher for long documents
Indesign has the option to split long documents into books (if I remember the term correctly), e.g. a book per chapter, and generate the TOC and index across those books belonging together.
It would be nice if Affinity Publisher would eventually get this as well as it makes working with very long documents a bit easier than having to use multiple unconnected Affinity Publisher files as well as allowing for multiple people working on the same long document at the same time by each editing a different book from the set.

Rylek reacted to Ray C in Objects to "No Print"
I don't see how to create a feature (object/layer) that is visible, but won't print.

Rylek reacted to iaing in Overflow text alert
I know there's an eye icon on a text frame if there's overflowed text, but if the frame isn't selected there's no visual warning you've got overflowed text, nor is there if I then attempt to export or print the file - I know I need this because Id frequently warns me of this, when I try to export pdfs with overflowed text!

Rylek reacted to Mugsy in Arrows on strokes (lines)
Need ability to add arrowheads, pointers, dots at end of lines, brackets, etc. Use this a lot in technical documentation right inside the document.
The graphic is placed, then callouts added, all is grouped and positioned on page.

Rylek reacted to captain_slocum in anchoring tables (and images) into the (reflowable) text
I have posted on the other similar thread to the same effect. Not having inline graphics and tables is just a non-starter. I like what I have seen of AP so far, but this really is a deal breaker. I know that is an overused phrase, but it is just not possible to create a 100 page booklet with graphics and tables unless they flow with the text. Imagine you had to add a paragraph at the front of the booklet - you would have to go through 100 pages adjusting the graphics and tables, which is not just time consuming but very prone to error. So this is an absolutely essential feature and I would not even countenance using AP without it. Please pass this on to your design team.
Now I know that this feature is not in the app, I will no longer waste any more of my time testing it until I am notified that the feature will definitely be in there from the start of the finished product.

Rylek reacted to spamjim in Make guides easier to add or remove
Agreed.
A workaround for now is to create a multi-column text frame on a master page. Drag guides from the rulers to align with the text frame's columns. Delete the text frame.
