GaseousClay reacted to Swörl in Tutorial: design repeating patterns in Affinity Designer and use them in your designs
Hi there! I love designing with repeating patterns. Now I found a good workflow to design and apply repeating patterns in AD. I recorded a tutorial that shows you how to design them, build a style library and apply patterns. They blend nicely with color fills using blend modes. The pattern and the color fill are in one shape, so no duplicates!
    --> https://vimeo.com/443692483
If you prefer the short explanation: I design vector patterns in a separate document using symbols to get the tiling right, export as bitmaps, use bitmap fills to build up a Style Library and apply those in drawings on iPad and desktop.

I’m not really much of a motorbike person but fancied doing one for a long time and Peter’s Ducati drawing reminded me that it’s about time I got around to it.
I didn’t want to do the whole thing this time, I wanted a small’ish project. There are a few crops that looked good but I wanted the Ducati name in it. This is a slight crop of a crop to make it A paper size. Adding depth of field, so some things at varying degrees of out of focus, was a bit fiddly at times but not too bad.
The petrol cap was sort of interesting as the reflections made it look very vector like in the photo. One of my favourite bits is the green petrol (I assume) pipe and clip (the clip took just over an hour) which doesn’t jump out at you but I really like it. Of course I also like my brake pivot screw that I showed the other day, together with the horn section.
There is one bit I was lazy about, on the fork crown the black paint in the photo had texture which I didn’t do. However photos of other bikes show it smooth painted so I’m OK with that. I think the brown stripe on the tank was actually yellow when new but I’ve yet to see one where it’s still that colour other than on a model. It could be the models are wrong though.
Near the end it was killing my MacBook so I split it and used a master for the finished stuff. Ignore any banding on the tank it only shows up on the upload. There are a few tiny bits that I might do as I get time but I’m quite happy with it. The main image is half size.
I did think to look at how much they go for these days, they’re not cheap.

This is an illustration of the first bike I ever rode. A 1948 Panther 600. Known then as a 'Slope Pot'. One bang for every 50 yards Probably the most complex illustration I have done so far. Wasn't sure if the software would handle the complexity. When I used to use Serif DrawPlus for this kind of thing, I often got a message that the drawing had become too complex to handle.  Doesn't seem to have the same problem in Affinity.  The biggest issue i have with Affinity though is the lack of an envelope distortion tool, which would have made things like the tank graphics easier.

    Hey guys,
just a quick and clean Designer file: a round sticker mock-up for your … mock-upping needs.

You can change almost everything and layers are named accordingly to their purpose: rotation, colour, outline.

Also let me know if you need a rectangular version, so I’ll add one with the same style.
    Edit: Rectangular sticker added.

You don't really need sections in order to have pages (spreads) of different sizes. I suppose it might help for organization purposes, though.

    Hi Stephen488
Yes it is possible, by using sections.

If you Right Click on a page in the Pages panel, you can start a new section.

    Good luck with your work
    Pman
Once you have made a new section you can then Right Click on the page in your section that you want to be the cover page and this time select Spread properties. In the dialogue box that opens you can select Custom size and then enter the size that your book cover needs to be. When you've done that you will now have different size pages.  You will then need to make sure all of your book pages are in a new section that starts after your cover.

    Good luck with your work

I think there is a better and simpler method…
Draw a rounded rectangle. Change to Text Frame tool and click on the rounded rectangle. Done.
Note: Corners remain editable using the rounded rectangle tool.

GaseousClay reacted to TheEarnestBunbury in Designing Pulp Book Covers
I've been working on how to create book covers that imitate those of the pulpy paperbacks of years past. The idea was to work on a method that others could use as a viable - and so necessarily cheap - option for the self and Indie publishing market. I had been making do with an old version of Photoshop Elements that came with my Bamboo Fun & Touch tablet but decided to take the plunge and try Affinity Photo when I got a new computer, and that turned out to be a very good decision.
So... I start off in a program nobody likes to mention - Poser. I'm not too fussy about render settings as so much is changed in post, what matters is the figure, the posing, and the lighting. The result is then opened in Affinity Photo, where I start with some adjustment layers (highlights/shadows, brightness/contrast, colour balance), along with a plug-in from Topaz called Simplicity. This result is then saved out and opened up in a paint program called Art Rage and then attacked with an oil brush and knife to leave me with a faux painting.
In Affinity Photo, I've been building some book cover templates and the faux painting is introduced there, with some wear and tear added for a display version. The two designs I've posted here were both based on Mike Shayne covers (the first is one I've seen copied by other publishers, the second is a bit of a classic - enough for someone to have created a font based on it).
For very simple designs like this - ie a single figure with one or two props, and also assuming a cover design template is used, then the production time can be between 2-3hrs. I believe that someone more skilled than myself can probably do both a better job of it and at a faster time but even at my speed, I think this could mean a low enough cost for the target market. I don't think I'm ever going to be sufficiently happy with my own efforts to enter that market myself (or, to be honest, with enough free time), so I would like to encourage others to have a go themselves.

No it seems to default to embedded but now something wonderful happens when you reach a certain amount of embedded data, when you next try to place an image you get this pop-up message.   And if you click on "Yes" then all existing embedded images are changed to linked automagically

Then you can apply this style to subsequent months. Of course you could also copy and paste the first table and change the details there.

Thanks! @GaseousClay Yes a lot of people insert the dates manually - which leaves room for errors.
If you automatically number the cells using Numbering in the Paragraph panels, you can avoid costly mistakes! It's virtually impossible to make a mistake, unless you start on the wrong day!
As a sidenote: in my youth I designed a comic book called Gaseous Clay, a boxer who won by farting out his opponents - needless to say it never took off - funny though that it's your username, brings back memories...

Fab work Eugene, I'm going to digest this over the next couple of days. Need to get my head around this shortcut for populating the dates for each month, I did mine manually per month.
I noticed if you just click the tab that you used to drag for more rows, you get a pop out with a counter, handy for larger number of rows.

I'm going to use a Calendar as a way of showing a few useful features I found out - and some suggestions.
Firstly, dragging out a table is great! Select the Table icon in the tool bar, select the Snapping tool to get it to snap to the margins, and simply Drag Out the table - you will see it gives dimensions - rows and column counts too! Pretty cool!
There are only a few modifier keys available. A modifier key is when you are using the mouse to move/alter something and press a key on the keyboard to get it to behave a different way.
Shift = constrains proportions CMD = sizes from the centre point where you clicked on the screen What I think is missing is a modifier key to allow the amount of rows and columns  - simple arrow keys could add and remove rows and columns would be super useful!

For this calendar - I only want the First 3 rows to appear. Month - Days - Dates
I draw out the table and let go of the mouse and low and behold - I have 7 (that was lucky) columns and 3 rows, as I only dragged down that far.

The added feature that's pretty cool!
With the Table tool still selected - you can drag down the table from the tab as indicated. Or similarly - on the right hand side, grab the tab and drag to add more columns!
You can slide them up and down or left and rigth until you have the desired amount of columns or rows.

However, once you have made your decision - you cannot remove the rows/columns by dragging them back up. I presume this is to prevent deleting information accidentally, however, if the cells are empty I don't see why this can't be done
If you want to remove the column/row you can select it and right click and choose Delete Row
However if you have more than one row/column selected you cannot choose to Delete Rows!
            No option to Delete Rows
To delete more than one Row/Column you have to use the Table menu and choose "Delete Rows" or "Delete Columns"

    Onto the calendar!
Select the top row and right click and choose Merge Cells

View>Studio>Table (I believe this menu and sub menus are subject to change)

Select your table and add some "Insets" so the text doesn't butt up against the cell wall - this is optional and you can adjust to how you like.
Very important to ensure you're on the CELLS portion - there is an option for the FRAME - which is above in the screenshot of the Table  Panel, this is relating to the Frame the table sits in and not the Table Properties.
That's a bit confusing becuase you'd expect the Table options to the forefront of the options, however, not a major issue!

In fact it's all optional - I'm leaving mine plain because I want to show another feature.
Insert the Month top row - days on the 2nd row - and leave the 3rd row blank.

Select the entire 3rd row and go to View>Studio>Paragraph
Expand the Bullets and Numbering List!

Choose 1. 2. 3. 4.     Change the text section to read as.

Note - when you edit this panel option - you need to hit Return - this shouldn't be the case - if you don't hit return your changes won't be implemented.
Your table should now look like this!

Grag the TAB as shown before - to expand the table to add more rows.

January 2019 starts on a Tuesday (any calendar will tell you that )
Cool feature! You can select cells noncontiguous - that means they don't have to be beside each other.
To do this - select the A3 cell - then let go of the mouse to leave it highlighted. Press the CMD key (possibly CTRL on PC) which is the "modifier key" then select the remaining cells.
From the List Type in the Paragraph Panel - you can then set this to NO LIST.

Your table will now automatically renumber to ensure all the days have the correct number assigned.

Drag the handle down on the side of the table -  to make it fill the page!

Select the numbered rows - right click and select distribute rows evenly

    Duplicate your page

    Rename Month to February
January ended on a Thursday - so February starts on a Friday and February 2018 has 28 days.

Select the first 3 days - and set the Paragraph Numbering to No List

    Voila! February is Done!

    Add your icons!

Now you can repeat the steps to make the remaining calendar months!
