@Friksel Thanks for solving a problem I was having using the "new" Stock Palette feature in Affinity Designer. I have rewritten your suggestion here in case anyone searches the forum for "Stock Vectors" or similar...
In the Stock Palette, the Pixabay option offers a helpful checkbox to look for just vectors but a vector dragged into your document will be an Embedded Object Layer, so you cannot edit it directly. Double click that Embedded object in your document, not the Layer itself, and it opens in a new document as an editable vector. Switch to that document and the vector has been converted to curves on separate layers. You can edit them there, then copy and paste the vector back into your original document. Or you can simply copy and paste the converted vector layers back into your original document and then resize and edit them.
I came at this from a different direction. I've been working w. image brushes, but what I've learned so far is not enough yet to let me make a brush that would always give exactly 70 sections of pattern.
I messed w. the problem a few times, trying to find a way to power duplicate the motif in a circle. Ended up making 2 70 section polygons, and drawing the form starting from a shape defined by the 1st section of the outer poly, and extending to over the next in the inner. Then moving the rotation center of the drawn form to the center of the outer poly. Then power duplicating it 5.143 angle X 69.
Had a number of problems. My shape, based on the very pixelated and distorted image you posted didn't work quite right. So I changed the shape to a symbol, so I could tweak the nodes, and get a reasonably even set of sections around the periphery.
Put some fx on the symbol group to make it look a little more photo like.
If you like, examine and use the included file as you like.

Enjoyed watching your video, sorry your coffee mug broke. ☹️ It looked like a good mug. Now, for part 2, let's clone a portion of the flames onto the bottom of the ball, blur/fade the copy and call it reflection from the fire. Reduce opacity to very subtle since a tennis ball won't reflect much light. You are right if you think I never know when to stop tinkering and tweaking. 😁
Hi @COBRASoft , I was intrigued by your question and tried it myself. When I place a SVG the SVG will be an embedded object in the designer file, so you cannot edit it directly. But when you doubleclick that embedded file on the canvas, the svg, you can go and edit the vectors like you're used to, including converting to curves. That looks to me as exactly what you want. But I might be missing something here?
If you want to vectors themselves to be placed inside another vector file, than you can also copy and paste layers and stuff directly in to the file. That way you don't have the svg embedded, but copied into the file. And then you also can convert to curves.
Maybe this helps?
@davidlower8 Here is a beautiful asset file which, if I remember correctly, was created and kindly offered to us by @firstdefence. You should be able to make some very nice swirls with these, for starters.
Fleur parts.afassets
@davidlower8 Two possible free font sources are "Cornucopia of Ornaments" and "Rough Fleurons" - both available from 1001freefonts.com in their "Decorative" category. Their website is a bit of a hassle to work through, but if you input the font name up at the top in the Search box, you should get right there. I have attached samples. The top one is from Cornucopia of Ornaments. Both fonts are accessed through the Glyph Browser.
Tim, not having an eBook Workbook protects the value of the book others have paid for. Once there is an eBook, it finds its way into leaked links, shared sites and other mass-volume gimmees. While a hard cover can be loaned or given away, it doesn't become a mass-volume issue. I'm not affiliated with Affinity or Serif so this isn't an official response. I did purchase the pricey Workbook, I'm enjoying it, but I can see how I might feel ripped off if it was suddenly available as a free leak-link.
A lot of work has been done for 1.8 changing the EXIF panel into the Metadata panel, where editable elements are editable and read-only elements are presented. We look forward to your feedback during the forthcoming beta cycle
Hi Granddaddy,
To do this in Publisher, if you start a new document and click View>Guides Manager and where you have the Horizontal Guides, click on the icon to add a new guide and that should appear in the middle of the page. Do the same for vertical and close the guide manager. Your page should now be split into 4 sections. The top two sections, you'll need to rotate your design so it's upside down. The bottom left section is the back of your card and bottom right section is the front.
Then just print and fold the paper.
I've attached a very basic explain file showing this

Hi,
this is a 12min video how I am blasting through the styling of a book in Affinity Publisher. I want to show you how easy it is to even edit mulit-hundred pages long books. I never thought it would be such a "blast" until I did it - as you can see in the video.
My suggestion if you come from Indesign or if you start with just plain text.
Set up your text styles first. Use the first chapter for it until you are happy - unless you already have a ready-made layout.
Assign keyboard shortcuts where necessary.
Set up your master pages, too. Don't apply them yet.
Use a "running page" master page as your first page, because if you auto-add new pages (Shift-Option-Cmd Click), it will take the current master page as a template.
Apply your special master pages for new chapters etc only after your text is formatted properly and flowing beautifully. Otherwise it will mess up your page layout.
Apply sections last, too.
So if you are afraid of throwing a 300-odd page book at Affinity Publisher, fear no more! If you do your homework (see above) first, the final formatting is a piece of cake.
Cheers,
Helmar
[Note: This is a not a polished video. It's just to share my joy of editing in AFP compared to InDesign. ]

Hi there!
I just wanted to share a list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts. This is a curated[*] list of some of the best freely available Fonts out there. The criteria I had in order to come up with this list:
They have to be either Free or Open Source Fonts.
They can be used in commercial projects (some restrictions may vary from Font to Font, so be sure to read first). I made my best to ensure this point, but I could be wrong and I'd be more that happy if you let me know if I made a mistake.
No attribution required.
In some cases (Serif and Sans Serif), they have to have more than two weights (at least one italic included).
Support for Spanish characters like Á, Ü, ¿¡!?, Ññ (since I speak Spanish, this was mandatory, but there are many more good Fonts that don't cover this criteria).
[*] I have basic knowledge about typography, but I have read reviews from well educated people in order to ensure quality.
Well, here it is the list. As you can see, they are grouped by classification, and a general one in that regard. Some of the Serif and Sans Serif fonts were included in "Headlines" because they had one weight or they had no italics/oblique.
[UPDATE] Added notes on some cases, like what the Font can be an alternative of.
[UPDATE] Added the number of Fonts.
[UPDATE] Adding previews of the fonts... eventhough some of them won't look as good, but it will help before clicking on a link.
[UPDATE] Where possible, I added a link to real life examples linking to Fonts In Use, for inspiration.

I recently read about someone paying to get some simple jigsaw artwork and thought it was a shame they had to do that, so I decided to create some shapes that could be usable for free.
Attached is a sheet of jigsaw shapes that are customisable (compound layers, just adjust as necessary) and should fit to any regular grid (after proportionally resizing the shapes).
Apologies for the terrible names of the layers but I think it’s fairly easy to figure out which one is which.
I’ve also attached some images showing:
1. The basic shape sheet.
2. A simple use of coloured shapes.
3. A more ‘artistic’ use with 3D and embossing.
The shapes are usable in all Affinity applications: Designer, Photo and Publisher.
You can use these shapes for anything you want, entirely for free, without restriction or attribution.

I confess being a total noob using a desktop publishing software, despite having downloaded Publisher Beta version for ages now :). I just didn't find the time to properly do something with it until now.
Topical I guess, I made a template for a 2019 diary (1 week per page)
With a master page, and text styles.
I purposely didn't add any fancy stuff in it, but I guess not inputting 365+ days by hand will at least be helpful. Decorate it your own way
Let me know if you see any mistakes, things that don't look professional, things that should have been done differently.
I'm always keen to learn!

No mistakes but my thoughts:
1. If this was intended as say, a printed booklet I would add a blank page on the end I.e. first blank page is the outside front cover and the last blank page is the outside back cover. Remember booklets always need pages to in in increments of four.
2. On the master page you could use tables for the days so it will be easier to fill in if you use it on screen with AP, and page numbers for the Week Numbers.
3. Have a Non Facing Page version for online use, this could be exported as a PDF with text fields added in Acrobat. Would be nice if AP developers would add this soon (along with other interactive functions like we've used for years in InDes).
Good idea though. The PDF version could be emailed out to clients with their individual company branding, or to family members as a sort of Christmas/Birthday card
