Staff Andy Somerfield Posted December 12, 2015 Staff Share Posted December 12, 2015 Hello all, Just thought I'd post up this little preview video of one of the features which will become available in Affinity Photo Beta sometime early next year - 32bit HDR editing mode! https://s3.amazonaws.com/affinity-beta/download/HDR+Preview.mov Andy. anon1
So do you always use 32bit to store the color values in the back? Otherwise they would have gotten clipped after the 8bit conversion?!
Staff Andy Somerfield Posted December 12, 2015 Author Staff Share Posted December 12, 2015 Yep - the 32bit mode composites in unbounded floating point space - so even if one layer makes a pixel "clipped", a subsequent layer can bring it back :) Andy. ronnyb, Paul Bravery and achilles177
MikeFromMesa
Very nice. I use HDR frequently so I am really looking forward to this. You have had a great 2015. May you have an equally great 2016. MattP
anon1
So if I use a "too strong" levels adjustment and clip (I hope it´s the right word) the whites and then adjust the exposure later on (bring it down), the whites detail will come back? That sounds good cause I questioned myself just recently if it would be better to use levels adjustment in an early or a late stage of image manipulation....your solution would erase that question :)
Staff Andy Somerfield Posted December 12, 2015 Author Staff Share Posted December 12, 2015 Precisely :) It will also be useful for RAW develop - because anything clipped when you commit from Develop Persona can be recovered / tweaked later on using normal adjustment layers.. csp
but how are the benefits kept when we output to 8 / 16 bit files ?
anon1
Why would you capture RAW files with more than 8bit? The benefit is during the working process...
Staff Andy Somerfield Posted December 12, 2015 Author Staff Share Posted December 12, 2015 The benefits are not kept when exporting to 8/16bit - but you don't need to! As well as being able to keep the .afphoto file, we are also adding import / export support for OpenEXR and JPEG-XR - both of which can store 32bit unbounded. Thanks, Andy. ronnyb
Andy, will the native Affinity file formats (.afdesign, .afphoto, etc) support 32-bit HDR, or only via import and export of OpenEXR format files? Yes, both import and export :D A 2021 16” Macbook Pro w/ M1 Max 10c cpu /24c gpu, 32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD, macOS Sequoia 15.1 2018 11" iPad Pro w/ A12X cpu/gpu, 256 GB, iPadOS 18.
Staff Andy Somerfield Posted December 12, 2015 Author Staff Share Posted December 12, 2015 .afdesign and .afphoto are the same format - just with different names - and they will both support 32-bit HDR completely :) A Paekke

ronnyb
Great that's what i was hoping to hear... What an amazing format you guys have developed! Adoblow™ — your days are numbered! .afdesign and .afphoto are the same format - just with different names - and they will both support 32-bit HDR completely :) A 2021 16” Macbook Pro w/ M1 Max 10c cpu /24c gpu, 32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD, macOS Sequoia 15.1 2018 11" iPad Pro w/ A12X cpu/gpu, 256 GB, iPadOS 18.

Metin Seven
Great! Eagerly awaiting this update. Really useful for 3D render passes, such as Keyshot's 32-bit EXR depth pass. visualization • illustration • animation • 3D design — metinseven.nl
rui_mac
I guess I will be doing more 32 bit multipass renders in Cinema 4D :)
kirk23
I'd love to work with 32 render passes too . Only problem Photo needs a few tools from node based Fusion and Nuke to make any advantages from that. Or at least a kind of "formula" driven layers and masks where I could use output of certain layer group as a mask for another layer . Photo ability to do that are extremely limited. Not even at Photoshop level comparing with its clipping groups feature appeared in cs6. .
killwilly
I find all of the tutorials impressive, but why move the curser so quickly, please slow down a bit.
