  1. Just a silly experiment which I was playing around with after half-remembering something I saw on a TV show. Nothing special, just thought some people might like to see it, and maybe it will motivate someone into making something better. (All the Live Filters I used on this really hammered my machine – poor little thing.) Note: In case anyone is interested, the globe was originally monochrome and the background was a full-colour photo, the rest was created in either Photo or Designer.
  2. Below is my list of written tutorials I have done over the years. The first few were done using early versions of Affinity programs but they should still be ok. Some menus may have changed or tools look different but the basics are the same. Also most are for Affinity Photo, but some could be done in Designer. Plus the "Beginners Look at Affinity Photo" ones will pretty much be the same in Affinity Designer and Publisher as all 3 programs have same basic functions. PhotoPlus and Affinity Photo – make a fake Starry Sky background https://www.dropbox.com/s/3la5z4amc11wcgx/starry-Sky-PhotoPlus_and_Affinity_Photo.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Silk Embroidery Effect https://www.dropbox.com/s/9h4mpso7i77z1oq/Affinity%20Photo%20-%20Silk%20Embroidery%20Effect.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Silk Embroidery Effect V2 https://www.dropbox.com/s/6usbza25vidgmck/Embroidery%20Tutorial%20v2.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Vintage Cabinet Frames https://www.dropbox.com/s/bj2dsmwmy0juazk/cabinet-frames.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Fake Evening Sky with Rain and Lightening https://www.dropbox.com/s/mlcdnducotitp1d/Fake_Evening_-_Lightning_-_Rain_-_Affinity_Photo.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo - Art Projects Shows 2 ways to make a blank canvas on an easel have what might be a painted image on it, from a photograph. https://www.dropbox.com/s/8fx18c77t2dnulb/Art-Projects-sept2018.pdf?dl=0 Infrared V2 – Affinity Photo 3 ways to make fake Infrared images I Needed a project to use in the Affinity Publisher beta, so I thought I’d update an old Serif PhotoPlus tutorial to an Affinity Photo tutorial. It basically shows 3 methods to get Infrared style images. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0c0mgqfrbrdv4q5/Affinity%20Tutorial%20-%20Infrared-v2.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Convert German Video – Film Strip Image in 3 parts pt 1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/iewleyt95a8qhdk/Photo_Film_Strip_-_German_Tutorial_pt1.pdf?dl=0 pt 2 https://www.dropbox.com/s/2j35gkvxr9emcq6/Photo_Film_Strip_-_German_Tutorial_pt2.pdf?dl=0 pt 3 https://www.dropbox.com/s/6yvxubgne0kqct4/Photo_Film_Strip_-_German_Tutorial_pt3.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – False Water and Reflection https://www.dropbox.com/s/4sm0qqikvp0hs0a/affinity-photo-false_water_and_reflection.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Chinese Painting Styles in 2 parts pt 1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/uvqn9hf9mo2xwbr/Chinese_Painting_-Pt_01-_affinity-photo.pdf?dl=0 pt 2 https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ovc317ncjjosd0/Chinese_Painting_-Pt_02-_affinity-photo.pdf?dl=0 Affinity Photo – Beginners Look at Layer Masks https://www.dropbox.com/s/c0lsf9e7kdymdyd/A-Photo-%20Beginners%20Look%20At%20Layer%20Masks.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 1 – Better Cloning https://www.dropbox.com/s/a1d283mn7icltzc/ACTIV8-issue1-BetterCloning.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 2 – Spheres https://www.dropbox.com/s/igufcf3unu4z84b/ACTIV8-issue2-spheres.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 3 – Affinity Photo - Select Tree - Replace Sky – 2 ways https://www.dropbox.com/s/lx0ko7f2xjqsg3r/ACTIV8-issue3-replacesky.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 4 – Tri-Fold Image https://www.dropbox.com/s/1iyp59mr3bzjlri/ACTIV8-issue4-TriFold-image.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 5 – Emboss With Lighting https://www.dropbox.com/s/t5r6tiz3c7k7o1s/ACTIV8-issue5-emboss-with-light.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 6 – 3D Text https://www.dropbox.com/s/gif1x6xrtfrp2z8/ACTIV8-issue6-Three-D-Text.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 7 -Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher – A look at Styles This written tutorial, mainly aimed at beginners of any of the Affinity Software made for PC and Mac. It may work the same on iPad version but I don’t own one so can’t confirm that it will. It looks at what Styles are, how to make some Gradient Styles and some Styles made from images. Then how to Export and Import your newly made Styles. After that I do a basic overview of a couple of video tutorials I have made in the past. Using the Mirror Filter and the Equation filter to make new images, to then make Styles from. Lastly, another overview of a recent video tutorial, which looks at using the Vector Crop Tool in Affinity Designer to grab sections of an image to then make Styles from. The end of this PDF tutorial has interactive links to all the video tutorials and links to the downloads of all the Styles I have made in these video and written tutorials. https://www.dropbox.com/s/82szaatnflaw8fk/ACTIV8-issue7-Styles.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 8 – Affinity Photo – Make Sketch Image With Just The Channel Mixer A while ago I made an Affinity Photo video tutorial about making a sketch image just using the Channel Mixer adjustment. I thought I’d up-date it slightly in this written tutorial, which can be done in Affinity Photo, Designer or Publisher. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6etmt3am6ljprwn/ACTIV8-issue7-ChannelMixer-Sketch.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 8a – Affinity Software – 4 Creative yet simple ways to use Blend Modes This is a written tutorial update of a video tutorial I did in Feb 2018. They are fairly basic edits and will work best with an image that has a white background. So, I will use one I got from Pixabay, as are the other images used. Links to the video and image are in the written tutorial. The video was done in Affinity Photo but this will be done in Affinity Designer but I see no reason why it can’t also be done in Publisher. https://www.dropbox.com/s/sluebvjl86nuk8e/ACTIV8-issue8-Four-Uses-for-Blend-Modes.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 9 – A Beginners Look At Affinity Photo part 1 Looking at opening images and saving your edits. Plus, file formats also a look at the Layers Panel and Colour selection Although tutorial is for Affinity Photo all will work pretty much the same in Affinity Designer And Publisher https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ztaxn4siom7evd/ACTIV8-issue9-Beginners%20Look%20at%20Affinity%20Photo%20pt01.pdf?dl=0 Activ8 issue 10 – A Beginners Look At Affinity Photo part 2 Looking at opening and setting up a new document other than an image. The Brush Tool and changing the Brush Tips. Then looking at the different types of Pixel and Vector layers you can make. Layer Masks and their use. Plus, a quick look at Text and Shape layers and the Glyph Browser. As with part 1, most (if not all) of the information in this tutorial will work just as well in Affinity Designer and Publisher as all 3 programs are so similar. https://www.dropbox.com/s/kourodnfojwq26l/ACTIV8-issue10-Beginners%20Look%20at%20Affinity%20Photo-pt02.pdf?dl=0
  3. I'm testing Affinity Designer for the first time and I really like the ease of making complex shapes. I've never been much into Illustrator before, so Affinity is just what I need! I'm looking at the list of export formats and I couldn't find TGA. Don't know whether to think that's strange or not, but for game engines, TGA seem to be used more than I knew before. At the game design school I graduated from, we were encouraged to use TGA for UI elements. I thought that was strange to begin with, but I stuck to it. Now I'm modding a game, and the game wants TGA. It becomes a bit of a hassle to export to something else first and then convert to TGA. Is TGA of any interest for you to support ? I know I'd be super happy, and could make faster iterations with the automated export. Simply make a change in a slice, it exports on the fly, go into Unreal Engine and refresh the asset - bang! Done!
  4. one of my project fist time using Affinity😍
  5. 20th of Februar 1962 John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth in Friendship 7, for a total of three orbits... Two years after I was launched, now I feel old. 2D vector art in Affinity Designer with a heavy duty perlin noise background in Affinity Photo.
  6. Second full issue of Skin Art done COMPLETELY with Affinity Publisher, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Designer. This issue went smoother than the last and part of that is due to converting my library of Postscript fonts to Open Type (I posted earlier this year about problems with fonts in Photo and Designer and a bit in Publisher ( https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/125130-strange-text-box-problem/&tab=comments#comment-688016 ). Happy to say that the proofing process with the printer went even quicker with a lot less technical issues. For those that are interested, it's available for order online and will be available in-stores on November 10th. Thanks again to Serif for giving me an excellent and professional alternative to adobe. Never going back.
  7. Red Bull not only have a pristine P38, they have, among other fantastic aircraft, a very shineeee Vought F4U Corsair. Somehow I just love the Corsair. Can you imagine in the board room of Voght....: "Hi guys, I have this big-assed engine on mah truck.... make it fly!" "Ok boss, what kind of armament do you require?" "Yes!" Done in Designer and finished up in Photo, the clouds are a mix of cloudbrushes and perlin noise, all hail the perlin noise.
  8. Journey to the edge of space. Considering it was a design by Walter Dornberger in the 40ties the X15 holds the speed record of Mach 6.1, a record that still stands today. Aircraft done in Affinity Designer and background with Affinity Photo and lots of gradients and blends, texture brushes, cloud brushes and lots of sweet, sweet perlin noise
  9. Time for something spacey again, I call this: "The launch" a young civilization setting out into the unknown for the first time.
  10. I've been using the Affinity programs for a while now and have just posted my collection to my website, below is a few of the things I have created Check out my website for more: https://craighogben.co.uk/made-in-affinity/ will keep adding more!
  11. Redbull´s magnificent Lockheed P38 Lightning was at the Hahnweide airshow, way back in happier pre-corvid times. I took a picture with the intention to draw her at some point, however during the research I found that Redbull´s website had professional pictures, much better than those out of my crappy cellphone camera. Free to download, so I used one of theirs.
  12. Feeling a tad Bladerunnerish at the moment and at the same time I have waaaaay too much time on my hands.
  13. Hi everybody, Probably a silly question, though still worth asking: how do you ad selections when you have already created one? Example: pick the Lazo tool and select an area of your image (or the Rectangular Marquee... Any selection tool really). Now select another area while maintaining the previous one intact. Just add more selections after the first one in the same image. In Photoshop you just hold "Shift" and keep adding selections. Second question: customizing the keyboard shortcut doesn't seem to work. When I insert a new shortcut, in my case "ALT + Backspace" to fill the canvas with the foreground colour, the software doesn't let me write the "Backspace" bit after the "ALT". I hope someone will be able to answer and clarify both my questions? Thank you in advance! Mauro P. S. I forgot to mention that I am on Windows and the last version of Photo.
  14. Hello! I find my situation ironic, as I dealt with all my US English text being underlined because it wasn't UK English for the longest time, and now that I need UK English checks, it simply won't come up in AP. I am attaching multiple screenshots here, as I'm at my wit's end as to why I cannot get UK English to show up as a spell check option. First, I checked my system languages, realized English (UK) wasn't listed there under 'Preferred languages', added it, and restarted my computer. However, it doesn't matter if I go into the Text Style panel, the AP preferences itself, or the character panel, no where does English (UK) show up as a language option. But it does show up under the Hyphenation panel. My mind is blown. I don't see how it would affect anything, but I added the British keyboard layout to my system preferences, and restarted my computer once again. I'm getting the same results. English (UK) doesn't show up as an option for spelling. There is, however, a en-GB folder in the AP Resources folder. What do I do to get English (UK) to show up as a spellcheck/language option? Do I dare copy the en-GB data file elsewhere, delete it from the AP folder, then drag and drop in an attempt to 'reinstall'? Will this break anything? I cannot think of anything else to do. Help! I am on Mac OS 10.15.5 / AP 1.8.4
  15. Pretty pleased with this one. I really like photos that incorporate vector shapes / line work, so wanted to have a stab at my own. The space / window section was done in Designer, than that file was placed into the larger picture in Photo with some further work done. I used a lot of tricks I learned from the lockdown Affinity sessions (isometric grids, using textures as overlays, various colour adjustments, etc.), so many thanks for those! 🙂
  16. Linking an image instead of embedding it, would be useful if you're working on different documents with the same file, i.e. a logo in a design phase. So if you change that logo it will be respected in every file it is linked. Besides that it doesn't increase your Designer file, that could be crucial if you're working with large files and make a lot of versions / copies of your Designer file. I think it's like the new version of the Photoshop Smartobjects (CC version). Would be great if this makes sense to you too and isn't too hard to implement. Thanks!
  17. Added a PDF tutorial describing some of the methods to create vector brushes from a personal perspective. Some of the techniques are a bit unconventional.. but I hope you find it useful! Created using AD and APu (1.7 beta) Sample pages as below: Create Vector Brush_06.pdf
  18. hello, here is my "Serie about Geometric Birds". They are for sale - just in case - just let me know. Thanks
  19. I've been playing around with song lyric artwork, and as it's the anniversary of the White Pony album I thought I'd do one for that. The lyrics are repeated (IIRC the text box is filled with the album lyrics 3 times) because to fill the logo would've required to blow up the lyrics a fair bit, which meant the logo didn't have very good definition. As a heads up, the lyrics do contain swear words. (I wouldn't have thought that counts as controversial, but happy to redo the post as just as link if it is). Logo and text and was done in Designer, background photo was edited in Photo. Obviously all kudos to the band for the pony logo and lyrics, I just did this a bit of fun fanboy art.
  20. I'm curious if anyone else out there is using Affinity products for making maps? These days , probably >95% of cartographers make their maps almost entirely within GIS software, but I was always frustrated by the limited options and lack of precision for controlling stylistic elements on maps in those software suites (both QGIS and ArcGIS), so I figured why not outsource the styling to Affinity products For those unfamiliar, mapmaking is not unlike standard graphic design. You have a document comprised of a bunch of different layers, some of which can be vector (like road lines, point data, etc.) and some of which can be raster (like elevation maps, aerial imagery, etc.). The only real difference is they are all encoded with spatial information. So what I started doing is using the GIS software just to compile and size (spatially aware trim/crop) all my different layers of geographic data, and then exporting a bunch of identically-sized layers that I then reassemble in AD / AP (i.e export a PDF of *just* the road lines, export another PDF of *just* the water body polygons, export a PNG of *just* the aerial imagery, etc.). As long as I maintain identical pixel dimensions for the exported raster layers, and identical aspect ratios for the vector layers, maintaining the appropriate map scale / size and reassembling the layers in AD/AP is trivial. Once I have all the data in AD/AP, I can take advantage of those graphic design features that GIS software could never hope to do, like advanced masking and layer blending modes, brush-based editing, pixel-perfect label placement (HUGE), etc. Another great thing is this method gives you ultimate control over design of the map frame and you're not stuck using the preset layouts and scalebars that are baked into GIS software suites. The included example is a map I made for my mother last Christmas of the area where her ancestors settled 150ish years ago. Its sort of like a modern take on the classic USGS topo map styles from the 50's-80's. (there are two typos I'm aware of, 'prairie' is misspelled in both instances, and 'convenience' is written as 'convenient' in the legend... if you see anymore, let me know!) cheers
  21. Hello everyone, Here's some works I've done with AD and AP.
  22. Even July is already over (by 10 days at the time of this posting!!!) Check out Julys illustration I continue my year-long need to drawing monsters and merge it with my love of retro games and arcades!! The illustration was made with Affinity Designer + Affinity Photo on the iPad Pro. Check out more illustration: https://bit.ly/36d5NtE Affinity Designer: I started the project in Affinity Designer (on the iPad) where I sketched out the core idea and layout before moving into a vector where I created the monsters, arcade logo, and background neon objects along with the ghost. After this, I moved over to the iMac + Maya where I worked on creating the 3D arcade assets + textures. After this, I moved back into Designer where I placed the 3D model arcades, brick wall texture and work on all the other small vector items. Affinity Photo: Now it's time to move into Photo, where I drag and drop the file from Designer over to Photo (on the iPad Pro) where I start working on raster effects, such as applying some brush texture effects to the vector monster to give some more levels of effects and style. All brushed used in this project is either the default Affinity ones or one from frankentoon. From where I was on adding some 2D shadows with a pixel brush and added in some layer adjustments and layer filters to the image to finish it off. Anyway, I hope you like the image and I hope you all have a great day. Before & After: Close up!!: What do you think? and I hope you are all doing amazing!!!!
  23. Hello! My name is Mikołaj but you can call me Mik. I've been using affinity software since first release in 2014 for graphic design(any kind of user interface design and visual identity assets). Lately some idea popped in my head – I am using the same tools in the same way all the time, so to prevent some kind of stagnation I want to challenge myself to create different kind of artwork that I usually do. Goal: Creating artwork from scratch in a poster format using every tool that is available in the software. I invite you to enjoy this journey with me. 001
  24. I used the new brushes and texture overlays I made to promote my new quick-start kits on my Gumroad store. This was the result! I teach English, and only get to draw in my free time. I'm still working up the courage and energy to do a complete dragon illustration. Will post here when I do! - Cheers!
