A long gap between my last post on this, but Steamcourt is finally wrapped up and was successfully funded on Kickstarter! In the end, we reached enough support to hit some stretch goals and add additional characters. We ended up with twelve characters total, and the reception overall has been really good. All art finished in Affinity Photo, with a few vector support elements done in Designer. Brushes almost exclusively were from the excellent Daub bristle set. Affinity was a joy to use! Find out more on the final game and see more at SteamCourt.com. :)

Thanks for the feedback, all! Penwiper, good thoughts, I'll probably try to get some of those in revisions. Test prints came out a bit dark too, so I might play with tonal values a bit also.

Without giving too much away, here's another in-progress character piece from the set, with some slight stylistic differences (some folks said they preferred earlier sketched versions of the characters, so I'm testing out some subtle outlines and sketch elements along with the original layers.

Penwiper, the game is coming to Kickstarter soon, so you can follow us at SteamCourt.com until it drops. It's super fun, I can tell you that. :D

Not 100% done, but this is a portion of a new art piece done by commission for an upcoming card game. All painting done in Affinity Photo Beta. So far it's been fantastic with few hiccups. The new beta does seem a bit friendlier to my Wacom as well. :)

More updates will pop up at SteamCourt.com soon!

Hello all! I threw together this social media template based on recommended sizes for 2015—largely based on Constant Contact's recommendations. It doesn't include quite everything, but it has slices already set up as well to help expedite most needs. Enjoy! :)

JoePoe, forgive my ignorance because I may be comparing apples to oranges but I often get images from clients that are very large, dimensionally, but only 72 dpi in resolution. To use the image I need it at 300 dpi. In Photoshop I would resize the image to 300 dpi. with "Resample" turned off. This significantly reduces the dimensions of the image, usually by about half,  but I often need it to be even smaller. I then resize again with "Resample" turned on, to the dimensions I need, maintaining the 300 dpi resolution. The images are sharp and print perfectly. I'm not sure what I am asking here other than that surely this can be accomplished in Affinity Photo, correct?

Don't use nearest neighbor. It's the most simplistic resample algorithm. Use Bicubic or Lanzcos as MEB says. The result will be MUCH better.

But this in NOT a bug. You are reducing the size A LOT.

Let me put it to you this way....
If you reduce the pixel size of an image by 50% in both dimensions, the resulting image contains only 25% of the original information.
You've reduced the dimensions of your image by over 83%, so (according to the exact pixel dimensions given) your second image contains just 2.87% of the original information.
You can't expect the same sharpness as the original when doing that.. no matter what resampling you're using. It would be the same in any photo manipulation application.

That being said..... after such a big reduction I would use an Unsharp Mask filter to (I should say a least try to) tighten things up a bit.

Often I will need to send images to my boss, and to get them to through email I simply reduce the file dimensions, to reduce the file size, so they can go through. In some cases after making the images smaller, their is a noticeable drop in image quality. I wouldn't call it noise but things don't look as sharp or there are jagged edges. This happens with images I take or that I find on the web. Also happens regardless of other filters or effects added. I will try to post some examples when I can, but just wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this or if I'm just lucky.

I want to reinforce the need for paragraph styles in Designer that can be saved and applied. I believe I understand correctly that this will be part of Publisher, but creating a page with a number of text blocks is extremely repetitious without this feature. Text styles created and saved in a Designer document should of course be picked up by Publisher when opened there. (Now, maybe I've just missed something...?)

    Thanks.

    Hi lesterng,
Text styles will be coming at some point. They are an essential part of Affinity Publisher and probably will be ported back to Designer.
Symbols, and pages/artboards are already on our roadmap to be implemented.

    Hi Soren,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Thanks for your feedback. Affinity snapping system isn't finished yet. There's still more options/features being developed.
Besides the options found in the Snapping Manager there's also specific/local snapping settings for the Pen and Node Tools (check the context toolbar, Snap section).

smallreflection reacted to MattP in Rendering issues: jagged edges / jaggies & antialiasing
    Hi Miguel,

This isn't a simple problem - or a simple answer...

There's definitely something funny going on when layer effects enter the equation inside clips... I tried removing the layer effects and I get a lot better results, although the clip does add its own artefacts (as it does in all other vector software) but this is only visible at draw-time and never appears in the exported results: Take a look at this comparison table to see how the on-screen rendering differs from the exported image in both Affinity and Illustrator. It's worth noting that in Affinity you can choose to draw the (slower) exported version to the screen at all times by choosing the 'Use precise clipping' tick box in the 'Performance' section of 'Preferences' in Affinity.

Basically, I don't think there's any terrible problem lurking here, but there's something strange happening with clipped effects that we'll have to look at...

In the future, we could look at adjusting our choice of gamma for our antialiasing ramp (it has no performance implications, it just affects the way it looks) so that objects draw differently, or we could allow a per-object user-selectable choice for this gamma ramp so they can make objects smoother/sharper? I'm not sure about any of that though, I'll have to think on it and see how it all works after we've got the problem with clips and effects working properly... :)

    Cheers,
    Matt
