fde101 reacted to MattP in Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.7.0.2)
Hi Wafer,
Just want to say that I'm sorry we aren't making the right decisions for you, nor are we making them in the timeframe you feel is acceptable. I understand that and accept it. We're working as fast as we can with the resources we have. Whether you agree with our decisions or not, only we really know the factors which guide our business decisions and we're making products we're proud of and excited about. I know nothing about the inner workings of your business, I suspect you know a similar amount about mine - which is fine. Are your devs on your forums talking to customers about the decisions they make and how to improve your features? All of our new construction tools, Node Tool functionality, column guide and Isometric studio features are entirely as the result of talking things through with customers and engineering a solution for their needs, so to suggest we are not delivering for our customers is just not true.
How you may view our priorities is guided by what you can observe... but what you can't observe is that actually the person writing a lot of the things you've called out as your priorities is going to be me and I've been writing the iPad version of Designer for the last year, so I've missed almost an entire cycle. As I've explained earlier in this thread, the iPad version is now written so I can get back to adding features... You're now going to say to me that I shouldn't have been developing the iPad version and that I should focus on customer requested features as priorities - and I'm now going to refer you back to the beginning of this response where I do try to politely point out that you can't possibly know what is actually critical for our business to succeed and that we are talking to customers daily and trying our best with our resources to offer something we're proud of and excited about.
I have to say that if, as you alluded, you're used to developing large scale products with complicated interactions, then I'm genuinely shocked that you can predict with accuracy the timescales different items will take... We generally find that development of research projects to levels where they're ready for public consumption takes an extremely unpredictable amount of time - and always has. Sometimes things go better than you hope, sometimes they go much worse... but if you're under pressure to hit a timescale then you are forced to pursue a route which will lead to a poor solution
There's no doubt in my mind that we offer a genuinely great alternative to just about any other design/illustration application and we're working to improve it to the best of our abilities. We'll get there, but rushing will just wreck the whole thing and it's not what anybody actually wants to receive and not focusing on the things our business requires along the way will result in no products at all... The updates are free, they'll keep on coming and we're trying our hardest. The decisions we make aren't accidents or misguided if you understood our business (which nobody else could unless they worked here and were privy to all our meetings). There's nothing to be too down about, is there?
Thanks again,
Matt

That is probably because it is actually an industry-standard term:

fde101 got a reaction from ronnyb in A few suggestions
The default is actually saved with the page preset.
If you change it and save a custom preset then switching to that preset will recall the linking/embedding option.
Given that the option is recalled with the preset, a global preference would not work.

fde101 reacted to jmwellborn in New app icon ?
The new icon does seem to lack "that certain sort of something." Maybe they could omit the upper right hand corner triangle, giving us an A again? The square looks a bit lonely down there on my Dock!

fde101 got a reaction from ronnyb in Lack of consistency in menus across all three betas
Those would be document windows.
Thus being panels, which are another type of window - again, this is defined in the Human Interface Guidelines under "Types of Windows":

Not always...
For these particular menu sections it might work out, but you really want to keep closely related items grouped together and in a logical order.
"Apple Color Picker" and "Assistant Manager" are not particularly closely related (logically) to each other or to the other items in the list. If they happened to fall alphabetically between "Grid and Axis Manager" and ""Guides Manager" I would not want to order them that way because the "Grid and Axis Manager" and the "Guides manager" are much more closely related to each other than to either of those other options. In this instance it would work out, but not in all cases.
Also, I'm not sure that "Apple Color Picker" belongs in the "View" menu at all... but looking at the other places it could be, it doesn't really fit anywhere else either.
The "Studio" submenu should almost certainly be in the "Window" menu not the "View" menu.

We are aware of this and are working to improve it before 1.7 ships
Thanks,

fde101 got a reaction from hawk in New Icons Too Similar
I can see that someone who is color-blind may have trouble distinguishing those...
While I don't have that problem, I don't like them anyway... I prefer the old ones also.

fde101 reacted to MikeW in setting bleed
Well, if people really want to get pedantic, what Affinity applications call crop marks...aren't. They are trim marks.
Deleted stupid stuff I wouldn't have written if I hadn't had way too much to drink beginning at noon...

ah, got it... I was thinking of where the point, not where the marks themselves are

fde101 reacted to MEB in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.7.0.98)
Hi p_mac,
That a Finder setting. Go to menu Finder ▸ Preferences and tick the checkbox Show all filename extensions to display the file extensions (.app in the cases of applications).

fde101 reacted to MEB in New app icon ?
All app's icons have changed to new new style (Designer, Photo and Publisher). I don't know if they are definitive already but they all match in terms of style.
-
fde101 reacted to obef in New app icon ?
I do really prefer the "old " app's icon.
Please do not change it.
I know it is not so important, but I like the old one, in line with the other (Designer and Photo)

Is this the place to let the developers know that you really don't like the new icons?
And yes, i do like the new functionality offered in 1.7. So thanks very much for that!

fde101 reacted to MikeW in Story editor - mandatory
QXP's story editor has been around forever... CopyDesk, which is a separate product has been around since QXP 3. CopyDesk is to QuarkXPress as InCopy is to InDesign. They allow, among other things, to edit layouts or parts of layouts for copy-fitting purposes and do not require QXP/ID to operate.

This is something I've noticed a fair bit - I'll get it passed on to development! Thanks

fde101 got a reaction from MattP in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.7.0.98)
That is current. Make sure it is in /Applications and was not moved somewhere else as moving it out of /Applications will prevent the beta from finding it.
Yes, because I am doing that.

fde101 got a reaction from Afrowave in Emoji and Symbols
How so?
Most fonts fall into one of two categories: either they are bitmap fonts (common at one time, now somewhat rare) having bitmap/raster images of each letter, or outline fonts, which are in effect vector images (similar to pen tool) of the letters, along with some extra metadata about when to use each one, etc. PostScript Type 3 fonts contain PostScript code that "draws" the glyphs, and SVG fonts are basically collections of SVG images, again along with the metadata.
The fonts do contain more than just the pictures of the letters, but in the end, they are pictures (or programs to produce pictures) of the letters in some form or another... with the possible exception of metafonts, but that is a whole other ball game, and I have yet to see support for those in the Affinity products (or most other major "modern" applications for that matter).
What we think of as "picture" fonts (dingbats, emoji, etc.) simply have those pictures as glyphs instead of what we think of as letters/text, but they "draw" them the same way that text would be created by that same type of font.

Hi Gigiga,
Welcome to Affinity Forums
Currently there's no way to set an existing colour as a spot colour.
Hi Kai2,

fde101 got a reaction from jmwellborn in Arrows on strokes (lines)
You can customize it quite a bit using the options on the context toolbar. Agreed it is not the most optimal solution in the world, and they should eventually get this working on paths, but if the arrows you need are relatively straight, it is still something.

fde101 got a reaction from R C-R in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.7.0.98)
Not quite true - if you print from the photo beta after sending the document over, you can choose an "n-up" document format and all of the pages can be printed from there, so all of the pages are actually sent to Photo; you just can't switch pages for editing once you are there.
You wouldn't really need the whole Pages studio panel to fix this - just previous/next page buttons at a convenient place in the interface, maybe a "go to page" menu option, would probably be appropriate? (ok, showing the current page number you are on would probably be a good idea too...)
