Automatic numbering is needed at multiple levels: chapter, section, heading, sub heading along with figures and tables.

do you mean a ruled line above or below the paragraph?  Did you check the Styles dialog box: Decorations?  I think that's where you can put a line above the paragraph or below the paragraph.

Michael117 got a reaction from clara-c in facing page text frames retain old position when inserting single page
@Papatez Thanks for bringing this up.  This was driving me crazy the other day.  When you have a facing page layout, the spread controls list an inner and outer margin, That makes perfect sense.  I have Master page layouts for a First page, Left-hand pages, and Right-hand pages where the inner margin is wider than the outer margin.  At first, the pages are laid out correctly.  Then I inserted a new Left-Hand page and it kept the Righ-Hand page layout.
@GabrielM--The problem I have with that expected behavior is that it doesn't make sense that the application would pick a layout that is not equal to the side of the document the page is being added to.  When I added a Right-hand page, the margins were placed where they should be.  The spread controls already have the layout for the Left and Right pages, shouldn't it automatically pick the correct one in the Spread?  Personally, I think this is a bug and not a new feature.

Michael117 got a reaction from Ian_L in [Poll] Do you need a DAM? And what should it be like?
I look at this from a workflow perspective. In my workflow, the DAM tool is at the heart of managing the images from a photo shoot.
    My workflow:
Ingest images from cards apply keywords to images as they are being ingested Conduct first-level sorting, review, and selection of images Apply raw processing changes (for example, synchronizing white balance, noise reduction, sharpening, etc.) Begin adjusting the reduced set of images to get to a final state.  This includes sending the images to other applications, like Affinity Photo, Nik Collection, etc and then having them return to the DAM tool. Making final selections and exporting images for the client to review. Having another Affinity tool to manage this workflow would be outstanding.

I believe that the plan is you would switch to the Photo persona (one of the icons in the upper left corner of the UI) to open the tools to manipulate the image. For that to work, you need to have the 1.7 versions of Photo installed.  If you also have Designer, you can use the Designer persona to use its tools within Publisher.

@walt.farrell Do you know why the decision was made not to anchor tables to the text?  I'm curious as to the  reason for that design decision.  I would think that most potential customers would find that a problem especially for documents that are text and table heavy.

Michael117 got a reaction from Puck in Thread 2 crash when opening Tiff file in AF Photo 1.7.3
I scanned some negatives using an Epson perfection v700.  The negatives are black and white 120mm images.  When I try to open the tiff file created by the Epson scan software, Affinity Photo V1.7.3 immediately crashes.  The log file shows that Thread 2 crashed.  Attached is the log file and the tiff image file that caused the app to crash, as well as a screen capture of the info on the tiff file.
I've repeated this crash with multiple tiff files.

Michael117 got a reaction from mrtymcln in Design Templates
I would like to be able to have templates for the consistency that I would need across documents.  We used chapter templates for the books that contained all the text styles and page layouts that we needed for our work.  We had templates for the main chapters, plus, templates for Index, Master Table of Contents, Title pages, and Legal page (where the copyright info and legal text was spelled out), Having the ability to create a template that can be used to start a document is a critical feature for professional technical writers.  And yes, I know that I can create a blank document to be used as a template, but the problem with that is eventually someone is going to save some changes over the "template" file.  The value of having the ability to create a new document using a template is that the template document is unnamed and must be saved and named after making changes.   Also, I'm not expecting Affinity to supply that kind of template with the release of the application. I agree with you that having some templates for various kinds of documents really does help people who are just starting out with the application.

Even Indesign was not able to package files from the first release on. It took a while for a native option (packaging and / or preflight), in the meantime (back in good old days) I had to use Flightcheck Pro (Mac).
So give Serif the time they need.

You simple cannot understand software development. Publisher is still brand new! They cannot put in every feature every user "demands" in the first release. It's not like the first release of Pagemaker had every feature of the current InDesign version.
We all have different priorities, but there are way more features out there that are essential than this, for most users (I'd guess more people probably need IDML import first). Packaging is convenient and they are working on it for future releases. Until then the current version of Publisher is quite capable for creating content for many users and it's without doubt the best thing that has come to life for desktop publishing, for us who want an InDesign replacement.

    A couple of thoughts---
When did Quark and ID add this functionality to their applications?  Was it available in the first release? MEB has said that this is on the roadmap; it's just not in the first release of the application. It's not possible to deliver a first release product that has all the bells and whistles of competitive products that have been developed for years.   Just about everyone on this board has a feature or function they perceive as critical and want it in the product now.  That's just not possible with the limited resources that Affinity has. Let's give the team time to finish off what's in the pipeline for this first release and then they can start looking at the roadmap for future enhancements. Oh, and they have two other excellent products that are going to be updated so that they are all on the same base engine as Publisher.

I'm kind of ok with it.  It looks like it's being used consistently throughout the UI.   Picking up a new application usually entails learning how the developers named stuff.

I do agree with this, but, just playing devil's advocate, what is a "good proposal" to one person may be bad or useless to another. Likewise, people may object to something for what, to them, is a very good reason. Disagreeing with someone is not necessarily being negative, often it's just expressing a different point of view.

I've been reading and commenting on this forum for a while now and I haven't really seen too many negative responses.  I can't say I've read every topic, but for the ones I've participated in, the responses have been supportive and sometimes very funny.  The responses from the Serif staff may be short in some cases, but I think that's due to the very large volume of comments posted for this beta.  The advanced members and the moderators who reply are always thoughtful and well written.  Even the "this feature is vital to my workflow and it's inexcusable that it's not already in the application..." type comments are met with calm, well-reasoned responses.
I think @walt.farrell deserves the House Cup for all of the great responses he makes. His current count of postings is 5,037.  Walt--do you eat or sleep?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
Sorry, I am unclear what terrible developmental oversight have we actually missed in your opinion .This thread was last posted to in November but the inline and pinned images/objects feature has been in the beta since 26 April, most people who tried this feature think it does what they need. You still have time before we launch Affinity Publisher to waste your time playing with try the Free Affinity Publisher beta on MacOS or Windows and see if it is suitable for you.
