Mithferion Posted May 25, 2021 Author Posted May 25, 2021 @jaedee@LibreTraining@walt.farrell@PAUL R FONTENOT Well, just out of curiosity, I took a look at the EULA, compared it to the License I got for Helvetica Now Display back then and it looks almost exactly the same. There are minor differences I found using Notepad++. They include the same sections that other Licenses of Fonts I've purchased have. So... I can say that it's safe for Commercial Use (with some limitations, but if you want to create a Logo or images for Social Media, as long as you don't share the Font, you are totally fine... but being free, they can get it on their own), it's just that it's a bit more complicated to find it. You can take a look at the Helvetica Now License before you make a purchase, by the way: Best regards! kenmcd and PAUL R FONTENOT 1 1 Quote Windows 10 and Windows 11 :: http://mithferion.deviantart.com/ Oxygen Icons :: GCP Icons :: iOS 11 Design Resources :: iOS App Icon Template :: Free Quality Fonts (Commercial Use) :: Public Domain Images How to do High Quality Art :: Mesh Warp / Distort Tool Considerations :: Select Same / Object - Suggestions :: Live Glassmorphism Effect

walt.farrell Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 Thanks. Apparently I may have misinterpreted what I read in the EULA. But do note that it's only for "Personal or Internal Business" use, from Section 2. All Fonts from Monotype have the same License with the same legend. But also see that it can be used in a Commercial Product given some conditions. Font licensing is really something not that friendly, and at any time you can send an inquiry to them. Nani Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 (edited) Hi. This is a very helpful list. It's very appreciated. If it's ok, I'd like to add these suggestions: SANS: Atkinson Hyperlegible (4 styles): https://brailleinstitute.org/freefont Ysabeau: a very large set of a "sans-ified" Garamond-style typeface, in continuous development; from Catharsis Fonts on github: https://github.com/CatharsisFonts/Ysabeau Andika (4 styles): https://software.sil.org/andika/ SERIF: Anglecia: for body text and for display, with italics, but unfortunately no bolds. The display fonts (regular, italic) can be found in https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/anglecia-pro-display and two text styles here: https://www.fontspring.com/search?q=anglecia BaskervaldX: https://ctan.org/pkg/baskervaldx?lang=en XCharter: https://ctan.org/pkg/xcharter?lang=en Borgia Pro: a high quality old-style serif in 4 styles, I use it as a substitute for Bembo; from here: https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/borgia-pro Charis SIL: https://software.sil.org/charis/ Bona Nova: a peculiar and interesting old-style serif; from https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/bona-nova Edited June 3, 2021 by Nani links Mithferion 1 Quote
kenmcd Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 @Nani Thanks, but ... This thread is only for fonts which are free for commercial use. So please remove the three commercial fonts you have listed and linked. Also, I just checked and XCharter is still broken - as of v1.221.(2021-05-30).OpenType-PS. The Slanted fonts are also marked as Italic, so they conflict with the actual Italics when both are installed. They, the slanted fonts, should be in their own style group (which is how I have fixed previous versions). If someone needs them I can fix these latest versions too. Quote
Nani Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Hi! Did you mean Anglecia, Borgia and Bona Nova? They are all free and can also be found on Fontsquirrel. Of course there are restrictions and they cannot be distributed, but for my purposes (book formatter) I think I can say they are okay for commercial use, in that they allow embeddability in a commercial product (print and preview). I have no problem deleting them, if I misunderstood something. Thank you for the advice on XCharter. Quote

I see. I just saw the FontSpring links and the prices, etc. - but now I see that some of the fonts are free. Perhaps it would be better if you replaced those FontSpring links with the FontSquirrel links to avoid confusion. Quote

Nani Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 I am currently in the long and tedious process of organizing my font library, so I found a few more free fonts which might be interesting. SERIF: Antyqwa Poltawskiego (very many styles): http://www.gust.org.pl/projects/e-foundry/poltawski/download/index_html SERIF: the original Bitstream Charter (4 styles) can be found on Matthew Butterick's website. He praises Charter as one of the best free fonts available. https://practicaltypography.com/charter.html SANS: Canada 1500 (6 styles): in public domain; http://typodermicfonts.com/canada1500/ SANS: Dimitrina (all 6 styles are free); https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/boris-marinov/dimitrina/ SANS: Grunschrift (a German font for schoolchildren with 5 styles, unfortunately without the Spanish letter ñ); https://fontlibrary.org/en/font/grundschrift SANS: Schar (a multitude of styles); free from https://thenorthernblock.co.uk/fonts/p/schar I hope somebody will find this short list useful. Best regards. Alfred and DEWLine 2 Quote
DEWLine Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 I'm already familiar with Ray Larabie's Canada 1500, and will definitely recommend it. Quote

The fonts were originally created as optical sizes. Somewhere along the line they got named (or renamed) as if they are different widths - which they definitely are not. Plus there are some rather severe display issues at smaller sizes in LibreOffice on Windows (complete breakdown to a black blotch). Could never figure-out exactly what was wrong, but I guessed some odd math issue with the curves created in Metafont. Converted to TT curves - as I was updating the fonts to work properly in LibreOffice on Windows - display problem gone. So I reorganized and renamed the fonts back the original optical sizes. Cleaned-up the curves a bit. Added hinting. Exported as OpenType-TT (TTF) to work properly in LibreOffice on Windows ... and Affinity apps. After I finish some documentation of the fonts, styles, OpenType features, etc. ... Will post the fixed fonts on GitHub soon (with a bunch of other fixed FOSS fonts). Quote

LassiP Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 Hi. Have you notticed Tex Gyre Chorus (https://www.1001fonts.com/tex-gyre-chorus-font.html). I used it to replace Monotype Corsiva, and thought it might fit to your list. It also has at least some of the letters that are missing from typical english text. Otherwise I'd not be able to use it for my Finnish works. PS. Many thanks for this list! Mithferion 1 Quote

Mithferion Posted October 10, 2022 Author Posted October 10, 2022 Hi! Well, now a little bit more of Sans Serif freebies. A little bit old but Eau is the first version of a nice Sans Serif (similar to Frutiger and Avenir) that includes 3 Fonts with matching Obliques. Eau Douce is a later revision, which includes 6 Fonts but has no matching obliques (so, I included it as a Headline font, but could work like a charm for signaling). Also, notice that there are some variations for the fonts, included in the ZIP Files. It goes like this: OSN fonts stand for Old Styles Numbers. LNG fonts stand for Lining Numbers.
