  1. MacOS: 10.15.6 Affinity Designer: 1.8.4 I've noticed there are a few bug reports around symbols and I'm not sure if this is related or new but hopefully it'll help debug. I've reproduced a minimal example. I've created two artboards and added a line using the Pixel Persona and a rect using Designer Persona to artboard 1 and made them both symbols. I then added a copy of the symbol to artboard 2. Modifying properties of the rect work as expected. Modifying properties of the line seem do not update as expected. Rotating the line seems to complete break and forces the line to disappear from artboard 2. The preview image however does show that the line has been rotated. I'm not sure if this is supposed to work this way or not with symbols, but when the (Symbol) layer is selected (not the Rectangle or Pixel layer) and the object is rotated, it only rotates the instance of the selected element and none of the other symbols are adjusted. Thanks for the support, this one is causing some headaches in a project I'm revisiting.
  2. It seems that dragging a symbol into a clone of itself is possible when it's a nested symbol (a symbol inside a symbol). This leads to a crash Drag the child symbol of one of the symbols to be the sibling (drop it underneath) of the parent's clone's child (the clone of itself in the other parent). Crash Bug 2.afdesign
  3. Hello, I don't know if this happend in previous version, but if you import an asset wich inherits symbols to a file, every instance of it gets added as seperate symbol to the scene. Please see the attached video. Or am i doing something wrong? If you need any further information, please let me know. Thanks and best regards Mario 2020-09-02-21-47-16.mp4
  4. Dear , How can I save symbols i created on one page to use in olther page.
  5. I see that when I create a Symbol in Publisher through the Designer persona, I can edit that symbol later straight in Publisher, without switching to Designer persona. I was wondering, if the symbols are used in a Publisher template for example, then someone, who doesn't have Designer at all, can see / edit those symbols. Or will they be detached?
  6. 1) Create new Publisher document with text flow 2) Switch to Designer persona 3) Create symbol 4) Insert symbol into text flow via copy & paste 5) Switch back to Publisher persona 6) Adjust symbol position using the pinning panel 7) Copy and paste symbol to different places in the text flow RESULT: Every pasted symbol is converted to a "Group" object and looses symbol functionality EXPECTED RESULT: For symbols that are copied and pasted to maintain symbol status, even when copied and pasted in Publisher persona
  7. IPad designer and photo. I created some patterns to use in my designs, for the printer I want tocopherol it into a A4 document. So I copy the artboard that holds the pattern and copy it into a new document, when I paste it the program crashes. If I save it to the cloud and open it in photo same thing happens, direct crash. even when I open it on the computer in Affinity photo, it has real difficulties with the file. Anybody any idea henk
  8. I'm having problems with symbols in a design; all but one of the copies is updating. I have created a template with several artboards for different versions of social media images. Part of the design has the text 'WEEK XX'. I have created a symbol and copied across four of the artboards. That's fine, they all update in unison. I have created a fifth copy, which I needed to change to title case and add a drop shadow. I disabled sync to do this and made the changes. Even after enabling sync again, it doesn't update with the rest. The symbol attributes show Unlinked Transform/Constraints but the text itself shows Unlinked Layer Effects, Text, Text Frame. I have tried different variations as it was initially the reverse; having spawned four copies from the title case version, the four refused to update. Can anyone shed some light on this?
  9. Create an object and apply a global color to it. Editing the said global color changes the object as expected. Then convert that object into a symbol. Changing the global color no longer changes the object. Say that you now apply the global color to this symbol object, it starts working again as expected, but only for that instance. If you delete it and drag in another instance the global color will no longer work again. See attached video for steps to reproduce. Thanks! 2_Trim.mp4
  10. Dragging symbols from the symbols pallete onto the canvas does not work. When a symbol is created, it appears in the palette but cannot be dragged from the palette to the drawing. Just nothing happens and the symbol is not placed on the canvas. AD 1.8.3.641, Windows 10
  11. Hello, I have the same problem. I cannot reproduce the tutorial here : https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/designer/desktop/video/301628203 Here a screenshot. Thank you and best regards
  12. Symbol instances populated along text path if they are center aligned do not keep their position after saving and reopening the document. Do as the following: 1. Create a path and convert it to a text path. 2. Create any shape and convert it to a symbol in the Designer Persona. Then go back to the Publisher Persona. 3. Copy symbol instance to the clipboard, then paste it several times on a text path. 4. Assign Center Alignment to this path. 5. Save and close this document. 6. Reopen this document. 7. Watch how your symbol instances on a text path got shifted.
  13. This has been happening a lot with symbols - I've found an old thread that might be related (here). 1. I create a symbol so that I can place it on multiple artboards and test different compositions. I never turn symbol syncing off or detaching any instances. 2. Then I start changing the colors of certain elements inside the symbol. 3. At some point, a few of the symbol instances will stop syncing the color for some of their elements. All other properties of the very shapes sync just fine however. For other instances everything syncs, even the color! In the following video sample I use the 1st instance to rotate an element (everything is one symbol) and change it's color. The 2nd instance updates fine on both properties. For the 3rd (buggy) instance only the rotation updates (and not the color). Things started going awry after I duplicated the 3 colored elements inside the symbol, hid the originals and assigned global colors to them. I'd be happy to email a sample corrupt file for debugging purposes. cheers! bug.mov
  14. When I try to copy a layer that has a symbol on it to another file, the app will crash and exit as soon add I press paste. The only way around to be able to copy paste the layer will be to turn off the symbol, and then copy paste the layer to the other file and then make the symbol there.
  15. I've run into some very strange behavior in Affinity Designer 1.7.3 on macOS that I finally figured out was caused by how symbol instances handle rearranging (moving back/forth), which might be by design I guess, but have such strange and unpredictable consequences I'm considering them a bug: It seems that when using symbols and selecting once instance of the symbol and pressing the "Move to front" or "Move to back" rearrange buttons this somehow applies to all instances of the same symbol. I'm guessing that this is more or less never what the user intends when trying to move a single selected object back/forward and it's very unexpected. This is further complicated by the fact that the canvas isn't redrawn properly for the other instances of the same symbol when this happens, so you only see that they've been moved back/forward if you scroll or otherwise cause them to be redrawn. And as the final problem, the arrange can't be undone. The problems seem to be especially bad when the other layers being rearranged are also symbol instances. So, together this more or less means you currently can't use the arrange feature on symbols and instead you have to manually drag the layers in the layers panel to re-arrange them if you want different instances of the same symbol on different levels. 16. I moved these quick symbols from PagePlus X9 into Publisher as they are quite useful for general documents. Here are the assets. Hopefully Serif won't mind me sharing them as they are so useful. Quick Symbols.pdf PagePlus X9 Quick Symbols.afassets
  17. Problem Even the most organized designers may find themselves needing to redefine a number of elements as symbols. After all, there are deadlines, the all too easy to use Copy / Paste / Duplicate options and other scenarios that keep us from relying on symbols. But what is worst is that to go back and reorganize these elements as symbols can also be daunting, because of large number of nested layers and each with their own unique locations. Solution Introduce a function that takes any element and replaces it with a symbol in its place. The function intelligently uses the same X-Y coordinates of the object its replacing to position itself automatically. Result With a Symbol Replace option, a user can Create their Symbol, and then go anywhere in the document and replace those items that should be that symbol. • No need to drag the symbol into the canvas. • No need to position that symbol into the correct location manually. • No need to nest that symbol in the layers studio. Thank you and pls consider !
  18. If a symbol line/fill/effect colour is from a document palette, and that colour is edited, and then the edit undone: the colour of the symbol remains the new colour and is no longer linked to the palette. While hapening most of the time, it does not appear to be consistent, so more than one attempt to replicate the bug may be necessary. Edit: further testing suggests the symbol colour is still linked to the document palette. After replicating the bug, and leaving the symbol with the wrong colour, editing the fill a second time is reflected in the symbol.
  19. Good afternoon people; I believe that, like me, everyone who makes patterns in Affinity uses the method to create Symbols > transform into Assets. At first I found it strange, but nowadays I confess that I prefer this than other software methods, especially by the easy editing of the Symbols tool. My only problem would be this: when it comes to replicating this as Assets, sometimes it's kind of annoying. I would suggest to the Affinity Group a Frame Tool option, similar to that of the Text Tool to facilitate the creation of Patterns. Something like that: the user selects his Asset as an individual object or a Frame; if the user chooses as a Frame, it selects the applied area and, as a result, the Tool replicates as many times as necessary to the appropriate size within the Frame Area. I made this horrible drawing/print to demonstrate, using the Frame Text to show something like I was thinking. Thanks guys, you're incredible.
  20. I have a problem where creating and updating symbols is broken in one part of my file but not other parts. I think there is some sort of corruption or incorrect hidden setting inside the hierarchy, so that creating and updating symbols works in one part of the hierarchy, and doesn't work in another. When it doesn't work it looks like it creates a symbol but the symbols aren't acting as if they are connected. For more context, the part of the hierarchy where the problem is occurring used to be underneath a symbol I've included the problem bits of my file here, BrokenSymbols_Start.afdesign is before they become symbols and BrokenSymbols_Finish.afdesign is after they are symbols and duplicated BrokenSymbols_Start.afdesign BrokenSymbols_Finish.afdesign I am using Designer 1.7.1.404 I also have a separate question, when you have a symbol underneath a symbol, what is the expected behavior when you update an instance of the nested symbol? Is the nested symbol supposed to update when an instance of it elsewhere is changed?
  21. Hey everyone! This feature request is for macOS as well as for iPad. It's great nested symbols is implemented now. I have a suggestion that would make things easier to see what's going on: It would be useful if there were different symbol indicator colors depending on symbol nesting depth. For example: Normal symbol: Orange Symbol that holds symbol(s): Yellow Symbol that holds symbol(s) that hold(s) symbol(s): Green ..... Blue ..... Pink ..... Purple ..... Red Best wishes, Shu
  22. Hi, if I’m copy any item/shape/img etc. with a symbols binding and paste it to other document AD crashes. Example in attachment video. RPReplay_Final1560869313.MP4
  23. Hello, I was wondering if is there a way to save document profile, like in Illustrator... So, next time I create a document, I have all the toolbars organized in the way I want and symbols that I created, there, ready to use
  24. Moin, Is there an easier way to archive the result shown below? The effect (blur) should only affect a part of the picture. It should work dynamically so you don’t must update the image manually and get problems with the alignment. If there is no other way - can you please implement symbols to Publisher? I had to create a symbol in Designer and copy & paste it to Pub. The feature would also make it a lot easier to mask out parts from a background and bring them on top over some text... but it would work that easy because you still have to adjust the mask after moving the picture... we probably need another solution for this. --- (just noticed it now... u can keep the second "t" maybe u can use it la[ ]er) Lg Marc Henry dynamic pictures.afpub
  25. I cut and paste some symbols from Affinity Designer into Affinity Publisher, but could not detach them in Affinity Publisher. Does anyone know if the Symbols studio is going to be included with Affinity Publisher?
