  1. FX knock out shadow and fill opacity in Affinity Photo My latest Digitally Fearless Affinity Photo beginner tutorial. How to use the FX knock out shadow and fill opacity menu, not to be confused with the layer opacity. Interesting text effects can also be achieved using this method.
  2. I have many many text FX and layer styles created in Photoshop that I'd love to import and use in Photo. Problem: When I navigate to a target folder with the PS styles I want to import, all of them are greyed out and non-selectable. Is there a way to import and use already-created layer / text FX / styles from PS into AP? And: Is there a way to create a REAL DROP SHADOW effect in AP? No, the Outer Glow does not do the same thing as a genuine drop shadow capability … close, but no cigar. Thanks for any input regarding how to accomplish these goals.
  3. Hi! I would like to have the ability to copy and paste one or several FX's layers from a shape. As we have the Effects layers panel, we could have a right click option to copy the desired FX.(one or several selected) Also to remove all FX's from a layer it's a long process because we have to deselect each layers one by one. It would be nice to have a turn off/turn on option with a right click on the layer for exemple.
  4. This is a bit tricky to explain, so please bare with me. 😅 I've noticed that when you have a few layers in a group, and the group itself has FX applied, when you merge layers within the group Affinity auto commits the FX, and because the layers are still in the group with FX applied, they get a second instance of the FX. Here's a quick example. I have a layer group with three layers. The group itself has an "Outer Shadow" effect applied, but the individual layers don't have any FX applied to themselves - see attachment. As such, the layers within the group are effected by the FX applied to the group itself, but when you remove them from the group the FX are no longer applied. With that in mind, I merged one of the layers in the group with the layer below it (also in the group) and now the Outer Shadow effect is automatically baked into the merged layers while still being applied to the group as a whole. I definitely don't think this is intentional/by design, as the layers within the group should surely remain untouched by the FX until the entire group is merged/rasterised. Let me know if you need more clarity - I can try and take a screen recording if that will help to explain.
  5. Problems: 1) In the course of changing FX parameters, I will tend to touch an empty area on the screen (sometimes by accident, sometimes thinking to de-select the current object and move on to a different task, etc.). It instantly messes up my FX parameters. This is annoying. 2) de-selecting yourself out of the FX menu, or selecting a different object, is a pain because you have to select the move tool, then click on your new object, then click back on your desired FX. This is too many steps, and requires selecting a tool that you don't actually want to use (ex. move). 3) when you turn an FX on, the bottom bar does not automatically update to show the FX you just enabled. You have to hit the name of the FX instead. This is unintuitive. Solutions: 1) if you hit an empty area on the screen, the FX menu does not change parameters. 2) to edit a different object's FX, simply click that object to have the bottom bar / FX side studio menu change and reflect that object's settings. 3) if you turn an FX on, change the bottom bar to that FX's setting. Other thoughts: It other tools and studio interfaces in the program, you can tap an empty spot on the screen to de-select the current object. Or you can tap another object to select that one. Then, the bottom toolbar applies to that newly selected object. FX settings, however, don't work that way. I feel like I constantly have to second-guess what I'm doing when working with FX. "Will this accidentally mess up the parameters I just set? Am I working with the right object? Why don't I see the settings for the FX I just turned on?" etc.
  6. Hi folks. I'm loosing fx (Outer Shadow) after exporting as a PDF. This is a Publisher related issue. Seeking help
  7. Hello, in a group, I put text and two vector shapes. If on the group an effect is applied (drop shadow for example), on the pdf output, it's flattened. And even worse, on certain documents, it flattens everything on the page. This is a behavior that does not happen if you apply the effect to all the elements of the group and not the group itself. Is it a bug?
  8. Hello, friends. First of all i want to describe glitch. I have a design with two elements in one group. I make bevel FX adjustments to one of it. Then i copy one element with adjusted FX and then use for my group - Edit/Paste FX command. The settings for bevel FX are changed a lot and overall effect looks completely different. I dont check other FXs - it need to be checked additionally. SUGGESTION - why not to place Paste FX in drop down commands for the Layer tabs - as on my screenshot? It will be more handy and logical - where you work with FX, adjust, copy and paste them in one window ..... maybe )))
  9. I am at Page 82 of the Affinity Designer Workbook and followed the instructions to change the Inner Glow layer effect from Normal to Multiply, Screen, etc... but I don't see any change happening. I have a couple of questions: 1) Where can I see the 2 colors that should take part in the blending effect? I only see one gradient color in the Eyeball layer. 2) What should I see by changing the Blend mode in the Workbook example?
  10. I am getting some issues with PDF exports when applying Effects (FX) to images under other layers with FX. As you can see from the attached files, the Exported PDF has the bitmap image (with Blur FX applied) 'bleeding' into the effects on higher layers. Once I remove the blur FX from the 'bubbly water' bitmap, the issue disappears. Boiler TEST.afpub Test Export B.pdf Test Export.pdf
  11. I've come across this just a few times but it's pretty annoying when it happens. When you select a preset style (ex. "glass"), it creates a layer effect but no properties are set in the effects panel...except opacity. There are about 5 other places to adjust opacity in AD but the one on the effects panel is extremely difficult to find when there is no indication there is "FX" attached to that layer. Hard to explain but it's a very real issue imo. If a layer style is selected and the only thing changing in the actual effects panel is opacity, there should still be an indicator showing "FX" attached to the layer. I can take screenshots to explain further if absolutely necessary but I honestly don't have the time right now.
  12. When you double-click the sliders in layer fx to get them to return to default, they do so, but then immediately snap back to their adjusted position. Like they were attached with elastic bands.
  13. I think I remember reading a post regarding this topic but when I searched again I didn't see anything. Is there a reason why "scale with object" is unchecked by default for EVERYTHING. I don't see the relevance in having it turned off by default. FX, gradients, strokes, etc. I think when I read the post a month ago or so it said it was intended to be this way. I don't remember reading a legitimate reason but can we, or is there already an option to turn it on by default? That would save me SO much time and is an easy fix. I would rather uncheck it on the rare occasion I don't want something to scale with an object.
  14. It would be great if Affinity apps introduced Layer Effects (FX) masks, initially only one master mask for all effects, and perhaps even better, individual masks also available for each effect. Thanks for your consideration and all you do. Affinity apps are awesome!
  15. Hey all! I’m trying to learn this program by copying existing Logos (i thought it would be a good exercise!) i chose to tackle the Toyota one, as it looked sorta simple at first. i’ve attached my working file as well as a jpg, with circles on my current problem Now i know this is pretty rough, and I haven’t figured out all my shapes very well, BUT i can’t figure out why the 3D FX is rounding the corner of the bevel instead of keeping it sharp! anything i’m missing?! Thanks very much! Untitled.afdesign
  16. Some times it is very convinient to have multiple layer effects of same times. For example i want to have 2 inner shadow effects applied to same level one for highlights and one for shade. It is on actually on roadmap.
  17. As a long-type PhotoShop user, I am used to being able to copy layer effects (fx) from one layer to another. This could be done with a context menu selection. I have not found this capability in Affinity Photo. Does it exist? I found another user had posted an answer regarding another of your products, but I don't see that feature in Affinity Photo. Thanks for your input.
  18. I apologize if this topic was already covered. I searched and found nothing quite like the problem I am having. Summary: Brushes, strokes, and effect are limited in how far up they can be scaled, limiting the overall size of the image created. I have a small bullet-like object created on the iPad. After opening the file on my desktop app I realized it is too small, so I scale it up. As you can see, from the attached image, the brush strokes and effects don't scale up even though I have the stroke's Scale with Object selected. I tried to resize the gaussian blur effect, but it is limited (won't blur enough). So, I am assuming then that effects such as Gaussian blur, noise, and simple things like stroke thickness are somewhat limited when you use them in large works. Is that assumption correct? And what about brush textures? Those are bitmaps right, so how far can those be upscaled before losing clarity? Will creating larger brush textures remedy the problem, and will AD have vector brushes in the future? For now, I hope that by exporting to the final size the quality will be high enough to be used. Thoughts or ideas? Thanks -Bill
  19. It would be great to be able to select the order of FX on shapes. Oftentimes I want to blur the shape of a vector object, but not necessarily the noise setting in its color. Perhaps adding Checkbox to the Blur FX panel to bypass blurring the Noise attribute? Thanks for your consideration and all you do
  20. Please, make it happen! A lot of us needs an animation alternative for Flash/Animate/After Effects, fully compatible with other Affinity programs. If not, maybe adding the animation inside affinity designer (a timeline) as Photoshop have to make animated GIF? Thank you, love you guys!
  21. Please add a radial blur to FX list, or just expand the Guassian blur options to include different blurs. Thanks.
  22. Hello there! I haven't shared this tutorial here, yet it's one of our most popular ones, so here you have. We'll show you how to create some delicious popsicles using simple shapes and Affinity Designer's FX Panel, we'll be also relying on Clipping Masks to speed thing up... all in all, a super quick and fun tutorial, for all those who want some refreshment in their illustration skills. Click on the image to read the tutorial, if it doesn't work, go HERE . Hope you enjoy this one, Enrique.
  23. Maybe I'm missing something, but when fx are disabled for a layer, the icon disappears, which makes it difficult to go back later to enable it. It seems like sometimes the settings are still there, but how to know which layers had effects on them? It would be helpful to to use a UI like you have for adjustments and filters. Thanks.
  24. Hello guys, I was playing around with the FX effects which are great. However I was wondering if you still plan Multiple Effects/Fills/Strokes per shape? In the past I was using SketchApp, which introduced the possibility to apply add basic effects to your shapes/group of shapes (as shown in the attached images). I found this very powerful, because you could easily combine basic effects into advanced effects, and honestly your imagination was the only limit. In Affinity Designer, the effects are OK, but you could push it a bit further if you let the user compose its own FX combinations. For example, I wouldn't need a bewel FX if I can combine two inner shadows effects, no? Cheers, DrM0lek
