  1. Last night I started on the layout work for a book I've been writing for the last 9 months. I know Affinity Publisher is still in beta but the ease of laying out my introduction chapter makes me SO excited to do the rest of the work!
  2. I just thought I share here my personal experience of using Affinity Publisher. I spent about 30 days writing and editing a paper with the purpose of publishing it as PDF. While I did use Microsoft Word and Grammarly a few times, to get recommendations on how to improve my text, 95% of all work happened within Affinity Publisher or Affinity Designer. Just about every day in this period I spent multiple hours, first getting to know Affinity Publisher through experimentation, and then creating the content within it. In all these days I had a single crash, while I'll admit that designer did crash several times right after a "Save as" operation. In these 40 days, I learned enough about Publisher to create a 44 page, fully illustrated business paper and publish it without major issues. I've attached some images exported by Affinity Publisher. I found the ability to export the publication as a set of PNG images quite useful in providing a quick view of the document for the user to check out, before downloading the PDF. As it should be obvious from my comments I am not a professional designer. I had not worked with any such tool since the days of Page Maker, about two decades ago. Still, I consider the results I got, working with a pre-release beta version to be quite good.
  3. Hi, I have just installed a new version of affinity publisher but I cannot open png or jpeg files anu more, the program simply does not see them... I hope it was not the plan, was it? Sincerely, TK
  4. Hey, I would like to know if is there any option on Affinity Publisher to change the name of the PDF on tab. For example, when we open the exported PDF in Google Chrome it has a name on Tab ("paper_taxis"), but if we open on Adobe Acrobat it shows the pdf name on tab ("Paper_BusTickets_PT_compressed"). We need to have a way to change that name. Is there any option to do that ? Waiting for your feedback. Best regards, Nádia Nair
  5. After using Designer for a few months now, I've gotten comfortable and efficient with the interface, much more so than with Illustrator. Occasionally, I'll find a small bump and realize that affinity likely has a solution, and sure enough, I either find a tool I had not been aware of online or by myself, following the increasingly familiar Affinity design logic. One tool I keep thinking exists but doesn't though, is color swapping between objects. I love how color swapping looks and works between fill and stroke, which is especially smooth and cool on iPad. As an extension to that, I find the impulse to select 2 objects and swap their fill colors, or their stroke colors. I believe this would come in quite handy and feel very intuitive. As an extension, perhaps cycling might be good as well, basically selecting various objects and cycling their color through each one. When designing, this would greatly help with and incentivize exploration and experimentation. Cheers!
  6. Just downloaded the Publisher Beta, but can't install. It says "Setup cannot proceed - supported windows version not found". This is strange because I am using Windows 10 Pro (64bit), has 4GB RAM, and has ample empty space in C drive. I also have Direct X version 12. So just wondering what could possibly go wrong? Does anyone has any idea? I have multiple designer files that I worked on before in another machine, but now can't use those in my current machine. Very frustrating! Please help.
  7. Here's a project that I've been working on - on-and-off, a couple of hours here and there - for a while now. It is a basic recreation - using Designer and Publisher - of a genuine UK Government booklet that was commissioned in 1976 for distribution if nuclear war broke out. It was on sale from 1980 but was to be distributed free to every household if things stated to look really bad. I've tried to be reasonably accurate in recreating it as best I can be bothered to but there are still some issues: * The booklet was manually typeset in 1976 so the actual typefaces used are probably not available in digital form. I've tried to get close but there are differences. * Where reasonable I have tried to keep the typography as it is in the original document, including the strange 'quirks' that don't seem to have a good reason for being there. (Almost every paragraph needed some manual tweaking.) * The colours are probably not accurate. I've been working from scanned documents of differing quality and don't have the original to hand (a quick check on eBay shows some originals going for up to £75). * The image on the front/back cover was created entirely in Designer but it's not a perfect facsimile. * All of the other images were taken from a scan and tidied up - with GIMP - to differing extents (usually very basic stuff). I simply don't have the skill or patience to recreate them with vectors, especially for a silly experiment like this. * Some things - weird layout, strangely positioned text, etc. - that bugged me in the original have been 'improved'. * I've added a disclaimer to remind the reader that they're not looking at the original document, just in case there was any confusion. While reading the booklet I recommend listening to the 12" Annihilation Remix of "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. The narration in the song includes phrases from the TV information film that accompanied this booklet, and some phrases that were in the original script but dropped from the film for 'decency purposes'. This took me way longer to do than I expected it to but it was a good learning exercise. I hope you like reading it. Know your warning sounds people! Note 1: To see it clearly, click on the image and zoom in. Note 2: The image quality has been deliberately reduced to make it less easy to use for nefarious purposes.
  8. Hello, I confess being a total noob using a desktop publishing software, despite having downloaded Publisher Beta version for ages now :). I just didn't find the time to properly do something with it until now. Topical I guess, I made a template for a 2019 diary (1 week per page) With a master page, and text styles. I purposely didn't add any fancy stuff in it, but I guess not inputting 365+ days by hand will at least be helpful. Decorate it your own way Let me know if you see any mistakes, things that don't look professional, things that should have been done differently. I'm always keen to learn! Diary 2019 Template.afpub

  10. Dear forum users, I have been working with publisher since version 1. It's amazing what you can already do in a beta version of Serif software. Even if the booklet is not ready yet, you can see the performance and capabilities of the application. Great program. Any feedback is welcome Brochure_Stefan_Fillibeck_Consulting.pdf
  11. I am admittedly a newbie here and this is a newbie question. I have noticed that sometimes, I get a menu when I right click and sometimes I don't: Under what circumstances, when I right-click, should I expect to get a menu in Affinity applications?
  12. I did some planner with Affinity Publisher and I need your opinions about this, what do I need to change. I very new at this I used to have Adobe Indesign but it's coming very expensive to keep.
  13. Hello, I've noticed another problem in Affinity Publisher – or two: 1. If I set links, the links are not always available in a pdf file created from the afpub-file. 2. If I crate a list with bullets and give the first word(s) another color (e.g. it is a link), the bullet gets the same color. I did not find a way to change the color of the bullet independently of the text. Is this a bug or is there a way to manage it? Thanks again!
  14. Since 1.7.0.221 I have problems with charset (description below). My keyboard layout is Swiss French.
  15. Sorry if I'm not seeing it but when I open APub Beta 1.70.227 it tells me to update via the forum thread, which i can't seem to find. Could be user error lol.. Please assist :)
  16. Coffee

    Business Card

I did this card in Affinity Publisher but I included the template in Designer as well. Download link is on my behance page along with some specifications: HERE Enjoy!
  17. Hi all My first attempt at using Publisher Beta Version 1.7.0.206. I needed to create a square image for Instagram to advertise a concert. I had a square image of the church which I imported into publisher. It was rather large so I had to reduce the size by dragging a corner to fit on the page. Although the edges of the image were visible in what I would call the work area around the page the photo's detail was not, which I found strange. The image was too bright to show the white text I wanted to use so I drew a grey rectangle over it and reduced the opacity to 64%. I then used the artistic text to layout the text. I was surprised to find how easy it was to line up the various text sizes. Once I was happy with the text layout I grouped them then used select all and aligned all objects centrally on the page horizontally and vertically. I then exported as a png using selection with background. So my first impressions are that this is excellent software apart from the work area. I need to create a multiple page document to see if its possible to park objects in the work area to move from one page to another. As objects don't seem to be visible in the work area I'm not sure how this would be possible.
  18. Hello, I have read, Affinity is going to make Affinity Publishet at the end of 2016 in Beta for an lunch in the beginning 2017... I have bought Affinity Photo and Designer, but not used for the moment, I still with the Adobe CC, I need a similar indesign similar program... So my question is when Affinity Publisher is going to launch ?
  19. Just for fun - and a bit of learning - I decided to try and create a spread from a UK TV listings magazine with Publisher. It's not totally accurate but I'm quite happy with it. It doesn't look much but there was a fair bit of fiddling around - my fault, not the software - to get it looking the way it does. If you have a copy of the actual magazine then please have a look and feel free to pick my rendition apart if you think I've missed something important or made any big mistakes. Some known issues: * The colours used aren't totally accurate but I wasn't really bothered about that; * The typefaces used aren't the real ones but I'm guessing they're bespoke for the magazine; * The bulleted list under "Best Live Sport" isn't right as I can't figure out how to change the bullet size irrespective of text height; * The text was mostly taken from various Lorem Ipsum generators and the rest was just me being silly, so you can ignore it.
  20. I would like to know if it's necessary to convert RGB color images to CMYK in Affinity Publisher before exporting to PDF file... I would like to send PDF files to a digital print shop... Do I need to convert all images used in the publication to CMYK or does Affinity Publisher do the conversion automatically ? or is it done by the RIP application...
  21. I noticed that when you want to create a new document into Affinity Publisher that there is no option to create a bloc zone. This option is important to me, because when I am doing a three-folds folder or more, I want to place my folder's marks inside the bloc zone. As an example, I use to put a bleed of 3.125 mm, plus a bloc zone of 12,7 mm over it. As an example, I saw some design where the folder marks were not perpendicular to get irregular and angled folds, in such a case, it is important to be able to have a bloc zone where to place these folders marks. That said, if Affinity Publisher will eventually integrate an option for the bloc zone, then we should have to an option to include too this bloc zone within the dialogue boxes at the PDF creation time.
  22. Here is a small pocket calendar for 2019 created with Affinity Publisher (primary just made in order to try and play a little bit around with APub table settings etc.). - However maybe somebody has a need for something like this. Note: this example is a business card sized pocket calendar (85 x 55 mm) and the calendar month/day texts are in german here, but all (colors, text etc.) could be easily edited and replaced. pocketcalendar_2019.afpub Have fun!
  23. Here's a simple magazine spread experiment that I was playing around with recently. It's not fantastic, but I like it and it was easy enough to create with Publisher. Text from 'Hipster Ipsum': https://hipsum.co/ Original image from 'Pixabay': https://pixabay.com/en/fashion-lovely-model-charm-woman-3075766/ (edited in GIMP).
  24. Does anyone know how to import Indesign docs from Affinity publisher new beta versión 1.7? I am a profesional publisher with more than 25 years in the fashion magazine printing and I have already passed from Quark X press to In Design, back in the days easily. Now I would be happy to switch, or at least give a serious try into Affinity Publisher (tired of Adobe new way of working) but without this possibility is nearly impossible to switch programs. Could anyone help? All the best Emilio Saliquet Publisher www.vanidad.es
