It's just missing an option to turn off the preview. If the developers add that option users can choose to either use it or not, depending on the job.

Maya also offers this, and absolutely requires this of the user if they want to get to any degree of speed and fluidity within its byzantine organisation of features and functionality. Having set it up, it's almost tolerable to use it.

Maya also has "right click markup menus" which are no longer covered by any kinds of patent protections and can be safely used by any kind of software for any kind of shortcuts. These are amazing, and actually had lots of preexisting art, so the claims over them by Alias etc were always a bit tenuous.
These can also be customised within an inch of their lives, and often this is needed if you're doing repetitive works, or wanting to stay sane after coming across for a visit from 3ds Max:

I half expected to see BMP export after all the discussion and suggestions for V1 to include it. That thread is closed, so here is my official suggestion for BMP export support to be included in V2.
It's the standard for several Industrial Controls software packages and using MS Paint or IrfanView breaks my workflow and creates unnecessary intermediary files.
    Thanks for listening.

Rudolphus reacted to dvandorsten in Feature request: Fine-grained stroke width control
Thanks for the amazing new updates!
One tool I found really useful in Adobe Illustrator was the width tool. It allowed for fine grained control of stroke width at different nodes. (here is someone else's video showing its features
Affinity Designer's pressure profile works well for short paths, but it is really difficult to use for longer paths where I want precise control for a small portion of the path.

Edit: The simplest way to allow for finer control would be a button on the pressure profile that adds nodes to the pressure profile line that correspond to the nodes on the path you are editing (and allow the pressure profile window to be a bit bigger).
A less simple, but more useful way is to add a width tool that when used on a node just manipulates the underlying pressure profile.

As most books and magazines use an ISBN or ISSN  with a barcode It would be great if Affinity Publisher had a barcode generator built in.
Is this on the road map for V2 in 2023?  though it would make a great Christmas present for 2022 🙂

Otherwise does anyone know of a Windows Barcode generator that is inexpensive? This is for a quaterly magazine for a charity.

I use the Mesh Warp to extend the background of some images. But there is no option to constraint the handle drag horizontally or vertically like in the perspective warp or most of the other dragging tool. It's much a needed option, especially on image that fit horizontally or vertically only. I don't think this should be a hard one, so please add in the next update.

I know this message could be a bit off topic here, but...
I want to congratulate the team that makes it possible to have Affinity, and I have just mounted a hardcover book of 315 x240 mm, (not a flyer or brochure for a restaurant only,  but those works also are professional work, right?) in deluxe edition for the Ministry of Culture of my country, the book has 60% high quality photos and 40% texts of 360 pages whose typography of large titles is one that I have designed myself, this book already had much advanced work and was about to close edition, and has not given me any problem to open it in APublisher 2.0 and work it cleanly, with confidence and security in what one knows how to do, we also have a phrase here: Who does not risk. .. does not win!
Being that in my country the vast majority of people in the field use pirated software for almost everything, including Adobe suites, also Corel and Quark, the price of about 80 gringo dollars, it's a bargain for three high quality programs that also work linked, are fast and efficient, plus they can be installed on the damn iPad, get that from other companies, that would cost you an egg ... and the other one too!
Be patients, I´m sure the dev team would fix the issues in the next days.

Hi all. Thanks for your patience over the weekend when our offices were closed.
We've had a meeting this morning and decided to ALSO offer MSI installers to those people who would like them. I can't tell you when this will happen, as there is engineering work that will be required to allow this to happen, but we hope it won't be long.
    Thanks for your feedback!

Rudolphus reacted to cgidesign in Colors are off on my second Screen.
In case you are using Windows:
It is just a guess but you might ran into a combination of two issues here.
Root cause is the way Windows handles the display's ICC profiles,
the other one is how Affinity "finds" those ICC profiles.
In general APhoto and I think the other apps as well, color correct their screen output according to the ICC profile set in Windows for the specific display. When you move the APP or its document window from one display to the other Affinity is switching to the ICC profiles accordingly. This happens when you release the mouse. So your rectangle changes its color as intended.
    First potential issue:
If you don't have a proper ICC profile for each display Affinity gets wrong information and displays "wrong" color.
    Second potential issue:
Even if you have correct profiles Windows might fool you. The issue is, that in some cases Windows does a wrong identification of the displays. It happens to me especially with two monitors attached to a notebook. In that case I have three displays. All of them have a correct ICC profile. But sometimes Windows reads my main display as the notebook display and assigns the ICC profile of that one. Affinity is then color correcting with the wrong profile.
    Solution:
Open "Color Management" in Windows (just type "color" in the search field - it will then offer the color management console).
    And now the complicated part:

Once you have set everthing, Affinity should work as expected.
But even the system panel might get messed up by Windows. Whenever I feel something is wrong with my colors, I check those profiles settings.
    Affinity limitation:
The developers of most graphic software I use, have identified this Windows issue and implemented a feature to directly assing the profiles instead of reading the Windows Registry.
    Example Firefox:

Affinity does not have this feature so checking the Windows Color Management is the way to go then.
On the other hand Affinity has the profile switching feature which alot of other software does not have. E.g. Firefox can only correct with one ICC profile / display. If its window is on my BenQ, I get correct colors, but if I move it to the Huion they are a bit off because Firefox still uses the BenQ profile. In my case this is not a big issue because both displays are calibrated to match sRGB quite accurately. So, the final corrections in the profiles are not to much appart.

NEW FEATURES in Affinity Designer 2
These are some of the most important new features in Affinity Designer V2   Vector Warp This hugely powerful and highly requested addition allows you to apply a non-destructive warp over any vector artwork or text. Choose between a fully customisable mesh, or use presets including arcs, perspective, fisheye and twists. Editing a warp gives a super-fast live preview, even on complex illustrations, and gives a true vector end result.

Shape Builder Tool Add and subtract shapes and segments in a much easier, more interactive way. Quickly create complex shapes by simply dragging between segments to combine or holding a modifier to subtract.

Knife Tool Slice any shape, curve or text into component parts faster than ever. A stabiliser provides even greater precision and scissor functionality allows you to click on any node or segment of a curve and split it.

Measure Tool and Area Tool Easily measure line lengths, segments, distances and areas of any objects to scale. The Measure Tool allows you to measure the distance between two points/objects, while the Area Tool allows you to determine the area, perimeter and any segment length of a closed shape.

DWG/DXF Import Import and edit AutoCAD and DXF files quickly and accurately, maintaining the layer structure and scale of the original file.
With functions like Multi Layer Import, Colour Override and Auto-scale, import quality is second to none.

X-Ray View A new view mode shows the makeup of your work, which is particularly useful for selecting a specific curve or object within a complex artwork.

... though I still can't help comparing Publisher with my car:
My car has so many "features" that, after a year, I am still discovering the nuances of the parking sensor feature.
It also has all four wheels. My previous car had few features, but it also had 4 wheels. I could use my old car, perhaps with a touch of envy for my neighbour - whose car had lots features, and 4 wheels. I wouldn't envy my neighbour even if his car could fly, if it had a wheel missing.
Afffinity, to me, can orbit the Earth - but Publisher  has a wheel missing,
    It is SO frustrating !!!

I'd love to see Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo get a brush size panel. Yes, it's easy enough to use the width slider or to use the dial on my graphics tablet, but sometimes it's just faster to pick the exact brush size you want instantly from a full sized panel. I know it's not the sexiest feature ever, but sometimes it's the simple things that help keep you in your creative flow.

Rudolphus reacted to ra.skill in Dashed line endpoint/corner alignment
Currently in all Affinity products when creating a dashed line there is no simple way to create even endpoints or corners. Yes, there is the option to change the "phase" but it very rarely gives the result you want and yes you can spend a LOT of time adjusting the dash size and spacing until you get something perfect... but none of these things are a good workflow... if I then need to adjust the shape the dash alignment goes off again and back to square one.
    I hate saying this but....
In Illustrator there is a very simple button to toggle between retaining the exact dash length and therefore corners or endpoints are not the same and stretching the dash between corners/endpoints therefore making them all the same (see image below).
    We need this in Affinity!
It's a big time saver, improves workflow and offers the best of both worlds depending on the desired outcome.

For a while I have wondered why the corners tool doesn't have an option to scale with the object (it can get messy when scaling) and now with the recently added contour tool the same can be asked about it. If the corner tool can be overlooked the contour tool really feels like it should have the option since it's result is similar to an object's outline.
