I can reproduce the freezing here and have logged it for the developers to look into.
It seems to be down to the pinned tables, as Bruce highlights there are better ways to achieve this, but it's still an issue we need to look into.

I actually started out doing it that way (paragraph styles) but for the life of me I couldn't get it to keep the entire line highlighted while keeping the text centered. Is there a way to make the entire background of the line black and keep the text centered?  The highlight/background color needs to go to the edge of the text frame (and not beyond) on both sides with the text remaining properly centered.
 
Edit: Never mind, found the decoration menu. Have no idea how I missed that in the first place. Oh well, at least I found a bug.

Something very odd going on here!
I get the same bug.
Try copy "TEST" and then pasting outside of the table (as Artistic Text).
Same result... "TEST" appears, then a number of additional lines judder into existence.

Not just Swatches, but also Assets, Symbols, Text Styles, Styles.
I hope we get a 1.7.5 type release that concentrates on fixing these long standing UI shortfalls.
And also fixes the Boolean and Expand Stroke bugs!

Had a quick glance at the two files.
I see no reason why the drop shadow in the Publisher version can't look identical to that from PagePlus.
Use the Outer Shadow effect, with low opacity (33%), a small radius (2px), and an offset (8px).
There are a number of other differences that would be easy to 'correct'…
The line spacing in the Publisher version is very loose compared with that in PagePlus, and the font size is larger. The background is more opaque. Optical Alignment is in the Character studio panel. Try turning it to Manual or Font to see how it improves things.

Can you confirm the version of Photo you are using, and also your version of Windows?
Have you tried Opening a file again since the freeze?
Do you have any files in %APPDATA%\Affinity\Photo\1.0\CrashReports\reports ?
To get there, copy the path above. Press Windows key + R, and paste. This should open explorer in the correct location.
You may wish to change the title of your post from your name to something more descriptive of the problem, that way people will be able to help more efficiently.
 

Ctrl + click (on Windows) the thumbnail in layers panel, makes a pixel selection. 

From the help…
Smooth points—applies smoothing to the points of the polygon, resulting in the appearance of a continuous curve. This only applies when the curve of sides is greater than 0%.
Well that came out larger than I anticipated!

Draw your curve.
Click on the final node to remove leading handle.
Done.

The status bar tells you all the actions / modifiers for the current tool and context.

@Friksel it is worth spending a few minutes to do a search for existing bug reports on the forum.

Until the bug is fixed, I try to workaround by applying the Layer Effects to a Layer (folder) into which I place all the objects that need the same effect.
 
This has its own issues (moving objects between artboards - since there are no global layers) but can help at times.

Truth be told I had not even thought of clicking on the thumbnail; I was busily clicking on the main image much as I would when using a selection tool! Not particularly intuitive; however, that's another splinter avoided as I slide down the banisters of life. Thanks again.

I like to work with a list of swatches and give all colors/swatches my own name. But with long lists it takes a long time to rename all swatches the way the interface is build now (look at video below).
What we have to do rightnow for all items in the swatches list, each time to rename:
Rightclick a swatch Move the mouse to the right where a menu popped up on a different location, move to the 'Rename Global Color' (or normal color) menu-item and click Move the mouse to the input dialog which is on yet another completely different screenlocation so we have to move the mouse all over to the left We need to click the inputfield first and select the text in it to overwrite it Type the new name Click on OK or press enter-key to confirm This is a pretty inefficient workflow when renaming a full list of swatches (or styles), it takes way too many steps and we have to move the mouse all the time and switch between keyboard and mouse.
 
What I would like to do instead:
Two clicks on the swatch so the swatch-textlabel changes into an input field in which the current name show and is already selected to overwrite Enter the new name Press enter or tab to confirm So no more mouse moves from right and than completely to the left, just two clicks on the same location and the rest typing in and confirming with the keyboard.
Not sure why Serif has chosen a completely different (and much more inefficient) UX approach for the swatches and styles panels compared to renaming the layers in the layers panel. I don't understand, because the layers-panel has such a nice and proven fast workflow to rename items which most people understand intuitively and already use in other software too.
So please make renaming swatches and styles the same as renaming in the layers panel! That would speed up the workflow so much and makes the repetitive task of renaming items so much more efficient. Thanks!

Affinity Forum hi,
I would to report a bug for the Affinity Designer 1.7. The kerning and tracking on paragraph styles are problematic (at least for my case). I am modifying the kerning and the tracking on the Base text style (kerning: -20, tracking: -25). Then, I am using the Body text style to write something. It does not work at all. I have to first type the phrase, then select it and then apply the Body paragraph style to have the correct kerning and tracking. Even writing a small text, applying the correct kerning and tracking, and then continuing, hoping that will keep the correct style, it does not work. This problem exists since version 1.6. If this is happening on other users as well, please fix it. It is impossible to switch from other software having these issues.
Please check image and attached file. The fist is correct, after selecting the text and applying the style. However the second one has the wrong values.

When I change the font color, the option window opens. I always have to click on "Swatches"-Tab. Please save the state of the selected tab. In my case, I always work with swatches and never with the preselected color wheel.

Draw a rectangle that covers the page, and give it a colour.
Lock the rectangle in the layers panel to avoid moving / selecting it.
Use a Master Page if you need the same colour on all / many pages.

Thanks so much for your files, which all show more examples of the issue found and reported internally last week.
So this turns out to be an (unintended) consequence of a (late breaking) change to the code made for Affinity Publisher. It only affects compressed (like JPG) files.  Although Affinity 1.7.0 files are much bigger they will not continue to grow and grow, this should be a one off jump.
We will look at fixing this, but right now we are making Release Candidates of Publisher 1.7 now (with 1.7.1 updates for all other desktop apps due at the same time). So this close to Publisher release the developers do not want to risk putting a quick (untested) fix in. Therefore the 1.7.1 Photo and Designer updates next week are unlikely to be able to address this, sorry, but it will not be forgotten and there should be a beta soon after that addresses this issue.

I had thought about this quite a bit.  I decided, after looking at how other apps handle this kind of thing, that a pure transform approach was neater.  The idea that an object lives in its own virtual coordinate system makes everything very complicated.

What exactly would it track?  The last plane that was active when any change was made?  The plane that was active when an object is first created?  What about when you start drawing with the pen tool, then switch planes while continuing a poly?
 
What if I change the grid setup, by rotating the grid cube for example?
 
While it is decisive when you use Fit To Plane, the notion of the current plane is purely visual and subjective.
