[AD 1.7.0.367] Effects are different after pasting FX!!

Recommended Posts

When working on a big layout I use copy on an object with Effects applied to it and than paste FX on the target objects to make sure all my objects get the exact same outer shadow.

But it's not working as expected: when pasting the Effects on an object with a different size, the values of the Effects (at least with Outer Shadow) are different!! It looks like Designer does some sort of proportionally scaling to the surface of the object we paste the Fx unto, but that's not consistent and unwanted anyway. I don't know what Designer does with the values, but it's not pasting the FX the way se set them up and copied. This way paste FX is pretty useless, because we want to have the exact same effects on all our objects. At least with effects like Shadow, Glow etc. Now we still have to adjust all FX-values by hand, so copying and pasting didn't make much sense.

I've been looking for a way to paste with absolute values (like checkboxes, preferences, a different menu item for it), but could't find it anywhere. Especially because we set the Outer Shadow value in pixels and not in percentages, we might expect the FX get copied with absolute values too. So I call this a bug.

(Unfortunately rightnow I have to walk through all of my (around 100) objects in the file one by one to set the right Outer Shadow values... 'cause I just found out it isn't using the same shadow everywhere now... damn :()

Hope this can be fixed soon, because copying and pasting FX is a pretty nice workflow that really speeds up the workflow and the way it is build now is just unusable!!
Thanks in advance!

@Friksel it is worth spending a few minutes to do a search for existing bug reports on the forum.

Long standing issues like this have been discussed (many times) before…

^ Just the first 4 threads that I spotted.

Until the bug is fixed, I try to workaround by applying the Layer Effects to a Layer (folder) into which I place all the objects that need the same effect.

This has its own issues (moving objects between artboards - since there are no global layers) but can help at times.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I copy the effects from a smaller object to a larger one, the effects are adjusted proportionally,

Click once on the cogwheel next to the effect. A new options window should open. There you can select "Scale with object".

Pasted fx will be scaled regardless of "Scale with object" setting.

Copying the effects then pasting them on larger same shape/object, the effects are adjusted with same first values, but when pasting the effects on other shapes or objects, this is the problem, kindly check the screenshot...

This is still happening in 1.9.2 and the latest beta.

There is no setting or workflow that allows consistent absolute application of copying/pasting of styles on objects that are scaled differently, regardless of the scale with object check box.

Does Affinity have an answer or response?
