I've been rather busy, but I did come across the topic mentioning the vector flood tool. If I hadn't, I wouldn't even know a new tool was available. I was pretty confused the tool I saw mentioned was nowhere to be found, for a second I thought it had been cancelled.
And no, I'm not going to read several pages of FAQs if I'm busy. I'm going to take my free time after work to do other stuff.
You have to remember forum users are a miniscule minority. The vast, vast majority of users will barely ever open the basic help section. To imagine they'll read FAQs or announcements to find a new tool is just not knowing how people behave. Hence why I find pretty baffling that time was spent coding a tool, only to hide it in a way that ensures the vast majority of the user base will never find it.
EDIT: There's a reason why corporations like Google or Microsoft shove their new tools right in front of users, in pretty obvious and in your face places, or they have onboarding in the form of a tutorial, or a "NEW" tag/popover next to the feature. They spent time and money on these, and they know that without putting these front and center, users will not find them, users will not care to hunt for new functionality. They know this for absolute certain, that's why they do it.
The extremely obnoxious actions start when they do not provide the user with a way to hide the new stuff. Microsoft does this often. Or is when they change the UI in such a way that it cannot be undone anymore, and the sole purpose of that change was to shove stuff down users throat. Google is an example that comes to mind on this.

It was not hidden, there was an issue adding it to users that may have customised their current toolset
If you purchase 2.1 new it is in the default toolset and if you reset tools it is in the default toolset

If you're unable to find the Vector Flood Fill Tool after updating to Affinity Designer 2.1, you will have to manually add this tool to the Tools Panel. To do this, go to the View menu, select Customise Tools. You can now drag the Flood Vector Fill Tool icon from the pop-up menu into the Tools panel, or vice versa.
Create an object and apply a global color to it. Editing the said global color changes the object as expected.
Then convert that object into a symbol. Changing the global color no longer changes the object. Say that you now apply the global color to this symbol object, it starts working again as expected, but only for that instance. If you delete it and drag in another instance the global color will no longer work again.

I thought I'd give you a quick progress update and let you see some of things we've been working on at Serif Labs. We now have a scripting core that we're reasonably happy with and have put together a little test area where we can run Javascript code, so I thought I'd show you some of that. Things to note:
This is all VERY early, like pre-pre-pre-alpha.
The JS API is extremely fluid and is constantly changing.
This is not how the Affinity suite will run scripts and plugins; it is just a sandbox window for internal testing.
There is still a huge amount of work to be done. I can't provide any timescales for when scripting will be publicly released, for Beta or Retail.
Constructive feedback is welcomed, but I won't be able to answer all questions - see previous points.
I'm not claiming any of these examples are particularly useful on their own; they're just to demonstrate some basic scripting functionality.
Re Javascript async - yes, we support it, I've just not recorded anything yet. The sleep calls are there for screen-recording purposes only.

I'm a somewhat new user of Affinity Design. I signed up to join this forum just because of this issue involving OpenType Variable Fonts.
I've been working in the sign industry for nearly 30 years, mainly designing outdoor electrical signs but also lots of other things too. I've used at least half a dozen or more vector graphics applications over the years, but have done most of my work within CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator. I haven't considered Affinity Designer as an acceptable replacement for either one of those applications at this point. But I have been experimenting with Designer because I think the potential is there for the application to become more popular, particularly for anyone doing design work on a limited budget. Lots of small businesses and individuals will try to "home brew" their own logos and other graphics materials. Just in case I start receiving customer provided artwork in Affinity Designer format I want to be able to handle it properly.
For my own design purposes OTF Variable Font support is very important. I really like variable fonts that offer weight and width axes. Such typefaces will give me more flexibility to create a design that has to fit in a fixed space, such as a replacement face for an existing tenant sign cabinet. There is a lot of truly horrible quality sign design out in the field. Quite a bit of it features default Arial artificially stretched and squeezed to cram into a spot in the layout. The "designer" can't bother to scroll down the fonts list to find a typeface with styles whose proportions fit in the space. I think sign designers have a certain civic duty to not visually poop on the commercial landscape. A badly designed sign may be visible on a building or next to a street for many years. Badly designed signs and poorly maintained signs help fuel public backlash and inspire severe anti-signs ordinances. Variable type can allow designers to deal with space limitations far more gracefully. A variable font that has a width axis can be "squeezed" yet maintain the proportional balance of its vertical and horizontal strokes.
I spend a pretty decent amount of money on commercial type. Most type families I've purchased lately have included variable versions along with a folder filled with many static instances. Some purchases had only variable fonts in the package. For instance when I bought a copy of Proxima Vara I downloaded just one font file. I was pretty happy to see the arrival of the OpenType Variable format. I remember using Type 1 Multiple Master fonts in the 1990's (within Adobe Illustrator). The OTF Variable format brings back the Multiple Master concept, but with the much larger OpenType character set capability.
I really don't care whether Variable Fonts are supported by PDF or not. With a lot of the design work I do I tend to convert the type objects to outlines during the design process or when I finish it. But the Variable Fonts have become an important tool for the design process.
It's worth noting Adobe recently added more than 140 Variable Font families to its Adobe Fonts service. Out of vector drawing applications I think Adobe Illustrator has supported the OTF Variable Font format the longest; it's also one of very few that support OpenType SVG (aka "color fonts"). CorelDRAW has supported OTF Variable since its 2020 release IIRC. Even Inkscape supports OTF Variable Fonts now. I think it's pretty important for Affinity Designer to add Variable Font support sometime soon.
Hmm, Publisher is applying the change as you drag the slider instead of when you release it. This should be changed not just because it creates too many history items but because if you have Check=Live then it will start preflighting the moment you start dragging the slider and keep restarting as you drag the slider.

I've replicated it with your file and also from scratch in a new file. I had the Colour Profile set on my test document as U.S Web Coated which is why I couldn't replicate it before. To see this error, you need to change the colour profile of the document to COATED FORGRA39, which yours using.

I can chime in on this a bit from the perspective of print and packaging design.
Exporting a native AI file would be quite a welcome feature. And at least from the print perspective, it's a challenge that it's not as large as it might seem.
First thing to understand is that many printers and manufacturers, especially in China, want an AI file to print from. As such, when I do a packaging design, I always export a "print" .AI file. This AI file must follow a few rules to ensure you're not getting a call back from the printer. These rules actually might make Serif's work easier, and are as follow:
Always export as Illustrator CS6.
Manufacturers are holding to CS6 for as long as they can. *
Anything newer will almost certainly cause issues.
Saving as Illustrator 2020 (the latest format) is an absolute NO.
Always outline fonts to curves
Trying to keep fonts editable is a recipe for unmitigated disaster
Don't even think of sending the font files, there's so much that will go wrong
Always rasterize and embed images
Keeping links live will always cause you problems, even if you include the files alongside the AI
Always rasterize to 300 DPI, or whatever the manufacturer asks for
Never keep full sized embeds, the manufacturer may run out or RAM
Remember they're holding onto Jurassic machines to keep CS6 going
Always outline strokes to curves
The manufacturer may need to resize your art, and likely will not have the scale strokes and effects option on
Once they resize your art, any live strokes will become distorted
If you use weird effects, or anything that's not basic vector really, expand their appearance
Have a vector blend? Expand.
Have a vector pattern? Expand.
Have funky vector strokes? Expand (all strokes anyway).
Funny text effect? Expand (all text anyway).
Transform effect? Expand.
Live paint groups? For the love of all, expand!
Anything that's not a simple vector? Expand.
As you can see, at least from a print perspective, you don't want an advanced Illustrator file exporter. Quite the opposite actually. The more advanced the file exporter, the more likely the manufacturer/printer will mess it, and you'll have to clean up. From that point of view, an Illustrator file exporter is not an unending gauntlet task. You just need a software that can export CS6, and keep the file as simple as possible. Don't try to keep weird stuff live, if it's not a basic shape, expand until it is. If it's not expandable, then rasterize. Yes, you read it right, rasterize. I ran into problem a few years ago as a client's manufacturer was completely clueless and didn't even do the most basic preflight. As result, me and the client resorted to rasterize everything, except the dielines, before sending to print.
I hope this sheds some light on the Illustrator file needs of print designers.

...and a variety of customer file specific fixes and stability improvements.

iPad now has rulers - you can toggle them on from the View / Preview mode drop down. This is expected to have all the functionality of the desktop versions rulers, including:
Ability to add horizontal or vertical guides directly out from either of the rulers
Drag to change the ruler / page origin. This can be done by dragging from where the horizontal and vertical rulers meet (where it shows document units). This will snap to other objects, guides, grid, etc (obeying your current snapping options). You can reset the origin by double tapping in the same place.
It is expected that rulers are automatically hidden during any pan / zoom operation, and should also be toggled off with preview mode selected.

A number of suggestions have been taken on with guides...
1. When you move a guide by dragging it on a document you will now see both the position of the guide relative to the ruler origin (as before) as well as the distance from the guide's previous position. So this means if, for example, you just want to move a guide 10mm you can achieve that easily without having to change the ruler origin.
2.When dragging a guide, holding Shift will now snap the guide to ruler marks. As this is based on ruler marks this also means the further you are zoomed the granularity of the Shift-constrained snap increases. Shift will snap based on the distance from origin, Shift-Alt will snap to the delta distance.
3. If you hold Alt or Command (Ctrl on windows) before dragging a guide that will now create a copy of the guide.
4. If you drag a new guide from rulers then guide visibility will automatically be toggled on (if it was set to off).
5. Alt-clicking on any guide will delete the guide.
6. Double clicking on an existing guide will now open the guide manager dialog (with the guide you had double clicked having focus in that dialog.
Please note: on iPad you will need to use an attached keyboard or use the command controller (if not visible you can toggle it on from the document menu) to access the modifiers. Also worth bearing in mind that Alt is the global modifier for ignore snapping, so if you create a copy of a guide using Alt while you still hold Alt snapping will be disabled.

A new vector flood tool has been added to Affinity Designer. This is denoted by a paint bucket icon in the Tools Panel (on iPad you can find it nested with the gradient fill tool, on Windows it will currently need to be manually added via Customising the Tools Panel).
This tool allows you to automatically fill areas created by overlapping / intersecting shapes and open curves in your document. This tool requires you to make a selection first of the curves / shapes you want the tool to consider. You can then choose a colour from the colour or swatches panel, and tap within any enclosed area to create a new shape with that fill colour. While in the tool you can also drag swatches from the swatches panel onto any area.
There are two insertion modes to this tool you can select from the context toolbar:
Inside. This will attempt to create the new shapes / fills and place them inside existing shapes where possible.
In-between. This will break fills and strokes apart in existing shapes, and insert the new fills in-between.
The difference between the two is shown below.
While using the tool you can hold Cmd (macOS / iPad) or Ctrl (Windows) to make new selections (also combining with Shift to add / remove items from your selection). You can also click-drag the tool to quickly fill many areas all at once, a simple example is shown below with some text:
The tool works with any type of fill - solid colour, gradient or bitmap. The options in the context toolbar for min, max and stretch to fit are relevant only to gradient and bitmap fills, and refers to the method used to scale the fill to the new shape.
For bitmap fills you can select a bitmap fill swatch to use, alternatively you can create bitmap fills on the fly by dragging a texture file or asset directly into the active colour in the toolbar. Below is a video showing that in action with using assets to create bitmap fills:

For bitmap fills if the texture has any transparency then the fill will be added as an additional fill to the shape. This allows for overlay style textures to be easily added on top of an existing colour fill. We will look at a way to make this behaviour optional.
Finally it's also worth pointing out that when you are in the tool you can also drag swatch from your swatches panel directly into any area in your selection, to quickly add multiple different colours to areas without having to select them first.

With any layer(s) selected in the Layers panel, you can now hold alt (Windows) or Option (Mac / iPad) and drag to create a copy of the selected layers. The duplicated layers will be inserted into the layer stack in the position you have dragged to.
Note: on iPad you will need a keyboard attached, or use the command controller to access the option modifier for this operation.

New options added in file menu to close all currently open documents. If modified documents are currently open this will result in a prompt as to whether you want to save, with an additional option to Apply to All...
The Default shortcut will be assigned as:
macOS: ⌥ ⌘ W
Windows: Alt + Ctrl + W
Expected behaviour on Close All:
All unmodified documents should close
The last modified document should produce a prompt to save, don’t save or cancel - with an Apply to All... check box option on the dialog.
Assuming Apply to All... isn’t checked then it goes through each modified file sequentially where you choose to save or not, still with the option to apply to all remaining documents at anytime.
Hitting Cancel at any time stops the operation at whatever point you got to, leaving open whatever documents were left. You should not get prompted to cancel for each open document, and Apply to All... is not relevant to the cancel operation.
If you have Apply to All... checked and hit Save:
All modified documents which have previously been saved just perform a save operation to overwrite the file and close.
All untitled documents give save as prompt, and goes through each one sequentially for you to give a file name / location for Save.
If you have Apply to All... checked and hit don’t Save, everything closes with no further prompts and nothing being saved.

When opening a PDF using the iPad versions of the apps you will now be able to control the same options as you get on desktop (e.g. Text Grouping, DPI, etc.)
