It is not just numbers that count, it's the type of user.

I got quite interested in Linux a few years back, possibly to offer print or DTP services, still use it sometimes (Mint)

It seems that most people use Linux as a way of turning an old PC into a browser. The typical user seems to do everything possible to use free software, like a badge of honour. The other users use it for servers, specialized requirements and so forth. Linux is an enthusiasts machine.

That's no good for a commercial graphics product. Compared to a Mac, which has traditionally been a Graphics machine with people willing to pay. Even Windows users will pay.

The big issue is lack of support. If something goes wrong, you are on your own. The shiny Mac or PC has umpteen shops willing to supply and fix, for a price. Commercial companies need professional support! How many shops do you see offering Linux machines with back-up?

    Hi Mark Oehlschlager,
Change the units of your document to pixels temporarily and check the Transform panel again. Make sure both the width/height and X,Y coordinates of the rectangles are integer values to ensure they are aligned with the pixel grid. In those circumstances the gaps shouldn't be visible when seeing the document at 100% or multiples.

Try turning up (or off) "double click" distance if you're using a Wacom. That can interfere with the brush tool and cause the straight line effect.

    Hi erikmh, deebz,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
This is currently being worked for an upcoming version (probably 1.8 i don't know for sure). Matt P. (one of the devs) already post a small teaser on Twitter (see here).

We have made fixes/improvements to the font UI in the latest Windows customer beta. Sorry this issue has taken so long to get resolved properly. If you would like to try these changes the beta software is available in the forum posts listed below.
The latest beta builds are downloadable from links at the top of each of these beta forum posts.
Affinity Photo 1.8.0.532 for Windows Affinity Designer 1.8.0.532 for Windows Affinity Publisher 1.8.0.535 for Windows These betas install parallel, next to the release version (they do not overwrite your release) and so the fixes can be tried in the beta without affecting your normal workflow in the release version. #when using beta builds, please work on copies of your files, as 1.8.0 uses a more advanced version of the file format than 1.7.3
Once these programs have been through a full beta process the change will be released in a future free 1.8.0 update/patch to all customers.

Thanks once again for your continued feedback.

debraspicher got a reaction from CLC in Disappointed. No Multiple text columns in the next future?
It's hard for others to see it this way once a feature becomes a part of their toolbox. There's many features in a program that I very rarely touch, but when I find a situation where that feature fits a particular use-case or my particular design strategy (or just saving time), it becomes "indispensable".
It's possible to break up these elements into boxes and arrange using a grid, but if there's a lot of that going on in a typography heavy design as an example, then it can be time-consuming if any of these elements need to be "updated" and text altered. Another example, UI/web-design which is another direction Designer seems to be leading towards. Those are "text-heavy" as well, but they're not "documents".

As it were, we don't have many features (yet) for "reshaping" type anyway beyond the simple basics, so it's likely when they move forward, we will see something like column-based options updated as well I think. That's my hope anyway.

Nice group of projects, Debra; thanks for posting that search, as it gives some interesting examples and food for thought. But from a quick look at what came up when I did that search, very few of those projects had any need for text in columns.
Sorry, but I remain unconvinced that Designer needs that feature. But my opinion in this matters very much, and from a user perspective yours or Cuando's opinions are just as valid. In the end it's up to Serif to decide their marketing strategy, and their feature partitioning among the Affinity apps.

I think Designer (currently) is being specialized more for graphical works than even Illustrator. In college we would make basic (generally graphic) fliers, text-heavy collages and "artsy" stationary in Illustration. In-Design would've been vastly overpowered as the features were largely unnecessary as it was just simple text-formatting for the purposes of "display", not legibility/consumption.

If you need a "graphical" reason to include this feature though, there is a certainly a utilitarian use for artists as far as putting texts in columns. Just look at many typographical projects:

I am shooting only RAW images and permanently open them in AP. But, every file must be abort RAW development to close and with several windows i have to click for dozens and dozens of times on abort and yes or for closing tab on yes to this every time.
    Boah is this annoying.
Please give me a setting to disable that. I just want to close this/all file/s without any of this.

    Hello team,
Loving the new beta, just disappointed that this problem still exists in this new version. Was hoping it could get resolved. This is unfortunately my principal issue with AD, as I work with rainbow strokes very often. If this could get fixed my designing process would be 1000 times simpler. As you can see, I have the brush set to Fold, and the mitre set to 100.
    Thanks everyone.

Hi, I think this should not happen.
If you have a small brush size to paint your overlay mask in raw development, you get splotchy results instead of a clean line.
BTW feature request: I also miss adjustment for feathering and opacity.

Please, let us be greatful for the work Serif Dev team are doing. Yes, all of our desired features may not be in at the moment but with time, I am sure they will get there.  Photoshop has 20+ years of lead and it's still buggy and laggy.
