We don't snap between geometry, only bounds of an object.  The exception is for points when using the Node tool, or positioning the corner of an object bounding box.
 
You can use the Node tool, and snap a guide to the nodes and handles of the currently selected curve objects.  I think you only need to select the object, not the individual handles for that to work. (off the top of my head I can't recall if I added this for 1.8 or if it's already in 1.7).
 
I could add snapping of guides (conceptually any infinite line) to curves in an object, BUT that snap could potentially have many potential targets.  To now, people have been happy with snapping to bounds.

Oh, I've done it many times already. Same thing for those bugs which are there for ages. To be fair, some of the bugs I've reported were fixed and suggestions I've made were implemented in the past, but Serif is way too slow.
@Jens, if you read carefully above you'll see that my main issues are broken features like constraints and incredibly bad implentations (exclusive to AD!), like non-visual tab settings and no image compressing. I agree with you on "distort / perspective", though

It wasn't necessarily that, it was that we didn't keep the roadmap up to date, and we started shipping new features which never appeared on the roadmap, and then customers (understandably) asked about why the particular feature they were interested in, that was still on the roadmap, hadn't shipped it yet. The roadmap was a vision of where we thought the software would go, 5 years ago, but over time, our vision has changed slightly (well, individual features have got re-prioritised).

I have just published a new beta - the focus is on stability and fixes rather than whizz-bang new features. We do have more significant updates in progress, but no dates at the moment I'm afraid.

There are several stages of making an update available, from what I've seen. Roughly, Serif:
Puts it on the server. Notifies us in the forum. At some point (minutes, hours, or days later, possibly) they enable it for automatic updating. It is only after step 3 that you would be notified when you run the out-dated version. It is possible (only Serif would know for sure) that a manually run Check for Updates will work after step 1 but before step 3. Or, possibly, you hit a timing window: you started .442 just before step 3 happened, then Serif performed step 3, and then you ran Check for Updates.

This beta has been superseded by the release of Affinity Publisher for Windows 1.7.2 to the public. Check back on this forum for future betas

It is certainly good to read what Craiigman and Fixx have offered.  However if you are just beginning it can be a little overwhelming reading all this for the first time.  To start you off in affinity publisher I have presented an example that I hope helps.
I have an A5  booklet of 40 pages here.  Set up as  Landscape.  Page 1 you can see.

Here is the end page 40.

 
Set up the document thus, important point set start on dialogue to RIGHT.  And you want Facing pages.

A5 Portrait, despite being a landscape document is because it is in reality an A5 booklet.

 
No need for any mental agility if you are printing at home. Hoever for PDF export and Outside Printers you may have to adjust, for example I had to once make front and back covers a seperate document and PDF and wasgiven detailed instructions on how I should export the PDF, a good printer will give you this information before you begin with document setup.  Otherwise for home printing this is straight forward as shown.  If I have missed something don't hesistate to ask. 

They should put the old one back and rename the new one to "Crappy"
