Ezra and Ally are excellent teachers.
I stumbled upon some of their videos ages ago, probably because there haven't been many Affinity related videos at YouTube back then and the algorithm thought I'd be interested.
And although it might be true that they are excellent teachers, they always gave me some "religious cult"/"Jehovah's Witness" vibes. No idea why, it was not about their content.

Necromancing this old thread—but as predicted, Unsplash has slowly moved towards paid (premium) content. I hope they'll still keep offering a good amount of quality open source images in the future, but I'm suspicious...

Sounds familiar - someone said they will offer free updates for at least 2 years when they released a new product 8 years ago.
Now it's 2022 and I still get free updates... lolUhm. Seems like you missed the point completely. Affinity never gave a deadline (a date, or a period of time) with their license. AFAIK it has always been "for all V1.xx versions".
So, no, doesn't sound familiar. It's the complete opposite actually.

Yes, you are right.
Apparently they changed the policy to offer free updates till they release v2.
Probably they think they'll be able to release V2 within less than a year. So people would uproar, if they paid for "1 year of upgrades" and neither getting V2 nor any updates for V1 after V2 rolled out, in case if it's less than a year since they purchased a license.

Ha!
yet another week has passed [...]
I'd like to thank you for your weekly reminder. As I can use every second one as a reminder for myself to move the garbage bins out as you post exactly on the day it's due.
(BTW: That's not even a joke. A convenient coincidence...)

I wonder what would happen if the pixel size wouldn't get set by the macro, or could get set by the user, possibly depending on the image details / the resolution / or a different unit instead of absolute pixels?
Yeah, as mentioned in the initial post, I created the macros for working on a client's brief. Hence the fixed size/aspect ratio. Unfortunately, editing existing macros in Affinity apps is still a nightmare/not possible at all.
QuoteInterestingly the .afstyles file does not need to be added (I haven't). And it works also appears to work with several layers if they are grouped.
It's interesting that it works without installing the styles, but that explains the macro's size. IIRC, it wasn't working with the Affinity Photo version back the days (when I created the assets) with installing the macro only, hence I had to add them to the downloads.
Same applies to grouped layers. I had to add the advise to flatten the layers and/or mark only one, because I had two users reporting problems when not doing so. But there might have been different reasons for their issues, I just remembered that I worked on flat images only for my client.
To be honest, I just did a quick check, if the macro is still working "as it was originally" before moving the files to gumroad.

@Andy05, who provided these resources, seems to visit the forums regularly, and Follows this topic. Perhaps they will comment about this, and whether they can restore access to them on Google Drive or (better) upload them here.
Thanks Walt, for the reminder! Although I received @RosM's notification days ago, I completely forgot about it again due to some urgent projects keeping me busy lately.
I've transferred the files to gumroad (https://thargoran.gumroad.com/l/engraving_effect) and updated the initial post with the link to it. It's still for free—just enter "0" into the price field. (But I'd appreciate some stars rating nonetheless.) Gumroad makes it easier for me to update it, if I ever feel like I should add/improve anything to this.

Good to know, but in this specific case applying to a group only leads to a rasterized combined layer. Which is not what the OP requested.
Hence my comment that the OP might want to keep a copy of the layers as backup.

Unfortunately warp is currently limited to a single pixel layer.
It also works on groups. In @globso's case, the two pixel layers need to be grouped first (creating a group within the parent group). Keep in mind, that warp is a destructive feature and will create a merged pixel layer of the warped layers, so you might want to copy the pixel layers first in order to keep some backups.

See also Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts end of support
Very interesting link! Although I haven't used any Type 1 fonts for ages, I didn't know about this part, which is quite drastic for some old files' backup in their original file format:
QuoteWhat will happen to documents using Type 1 fonts after January 2023?
Adobe applications will not recognize the presence of Type 1 fonts, even if you have Type 1 fonts installed in your desktop operating system:1. Type1 fonts will not appear in the Fonts menu.
2. There would be no way to use previously installed Type1 fonts.
3. Existing Type1 fonts will appear as “Missing fonts” in the document.
Thanks for bumping this issue, time to convert some old works into PDF in order to keep at least some "kind-of-editable" format of them.

Did you do the scan yourself? If so, it might help scanning the image four times, rotated by 90° each time. Then merge the stack of images. This might give an easier starting point for editing as the light on the "bumps" will be from different angles with each scan rather than fiddling with the FFT denoise filter in first place.

The problem in this forum is that many amateurs meet few professional designers. For this reason, software requirements are different. I hope it won't take months again until Affinity Designer is improved and extended with new functions.
That's actually not a problem at all. If you're hobbyist, you need to check if the apps are worth their money (also, if they have all features you need) and whether you'd like to spend time with them. If you're a professional and you can't do your job with the apps in their current state, the solution is the same, just more obvious -> find an alternative app, which fulfils all your needs.
-
There's much more when it comes to creating a good font/typeface rather than just scanning/creating simple letters.
You might want to prepare all characters in designer as vector objects. And for creating a font, there are dedicated apps for this. Some are even open source like Birdfont or FontFord.
-
My guess is that this font's "fill" is just the black outline/shadows. So it's impossible to assign any colour to the white areas (because they are actually transparent) unless you place some matching shapes underneath the text with the desired fill colour.

I still don't understand... these apps cost so little for what they do !
True. But the question for some people might be: Will the changes and new features of all of the three apps introduced with V2 make it worth upgrading all of them? A discount on all three apps as a bundle might make the choice easier for some.

It'll probably cost a fortune to buy an extended license. But maybe if I can redraw something that is inspired by the image, it'll be okay?
That's exactly what I'd do. Just enough of a change, so it's not the original illustration anymore. Or something like @firstdefence's example.
Edit: @carl123's example would also work as it's neither a logo nor a trademark rather than an illustration. Publishing something like that is covered by the license.

Thanks for the heads up. Fortunately, this image was purchased from Dreamstime. Standard license is unlimited use on Websites, Blogs, Newsletters, etc. This will likely be used only on a website blog. But I appreciate your suggestion to be cautious! Thank you.
Still, my statement is valid:
QuoteUnauthorized use
Without limitation, Media may not be used as a trademark or service mark (unless the appropriate extended license is being used), [...] The foregoing is not a limiting statement of Dreamstime`s rights or remedies in connection with any unauthorized use.
The licence allows the use of the illustration as such on websites etc. Using stock arts for logo/trademark design is usually not allowed.
-
Careful with creating a logo with illustrations from stock pages! Unless heavily changed (like: original's not recognisable anymore), most stock pages don't allow the use for logo design nor for creating merch.
The illustration you used seems to be sold by iStock.
Standard license:Quote§3 d. [... ] No Use in Trademark or Logo. [...]
I haven't checked the extended license, they might provide what you need.
If your client is using your design just for printing a couple of T-Shirts for themselves and some friends, there won't be a problem ("No plaintiff, no judge."). But if they want to use it on a bigger scale, it might become a problem at some point.

I really don't get what you thought. Pay once and get all new apps forever? Where did you get that idea?
"Hey! I bought a brand new Ford! Now, they are telling me, that there will be new models next year with some better features! Nobody told me that Ford would develop new cars and I'd have to pay for them again! Fraud!!!1!!"

Do you man USB connected conventional HD's or SSD's, or USB sticks (AKA thumb drives)? The later are notorious for corrupting files after relatively few writes.
Yes, USB (3.x) connected 2 TB Seagate conventional HDD (no SSD) in a standard external casing. Works without issues when copying stuff from and onto it, even huge files. Speed and error diagnose programs don't show any problems, even when run over night. Short, expensive/quality cables (no cheap $1 china USB connection cables with 10ft+ length).

There are reports abut Networked Drives. I don't recall any reports where the problem was a non network external drive.
i have had no problems with corrupted files and I use the external Hard drive almost exclusively for my affinity documents as well as all the various camera raw files.
Well, good for you then. I lost several hours of work when using an external USB drive in the beginning. Maybe there haven't been reports in these fora (haven't checked), but I had quite some users reporting corrupt files with USB drives at facebook or reddit.
