I love this idea, but I'm not a draughtsman so I've no feeling for how useful/popular this would be.

You call them "French curves"? We call them "Perroquets" or "Pistolets à dessin" (drawing parrots/pistols) :) 

They are usefull to have nice curves and avoid bad angles when trying to join curves.

Known as parrots here... used them when we drafted with ink pens and vellum.. :-D

I suppose there may be some computer equivalent fitting commands but probably no direct application.

I'd also like to see something similar to this. 

Even something as simple as a tool like the Crescent shape, only with an S shaped curve instead of a C shaped curve.
