Styles Dinosaur and Reptile Skins

Recommended Posts

I have downloaded previously Fur an Animal styles.  I just wondered if anybody had created any dinosaur or reptile styles?  I am creating a Dinosaur birthday card for my young grandson and cannot find anything suitable to print the SVG files onto. Cheers John

Stuart,  Thank you for these, I will look at using two rectangles one from set1 with a png background where I can use another rectangle with an infill background in conjunction with your style.  Thank you so much.  Cheers John

A few from me, these are all seamless so can be used as bitmaps from the fill tool. These are raster textures.

@StuartRc, these patterns look impressive, but they look nothing like any dinosaur i have ever seen. It will depend, of course, on the target viewers. For children's story books they would be great (Stewart the Patchwork Dinosaur), but not if verisimilitude is needed.

Reptile scales should have a modest degree of symmetry. If you want to get a good impression of reptile skin, look at a chicken's leg

Your patterns are truly inspired @firstdefence!   Just for fun I downloaded your images in Photo, Mac v. 1.8.4 and promptly received a notification that the file wouldn't open.  So I opened it instead in the latest Beta and wondered whether @pioneer was having the same issue.  And whether brand new users would come a cropper with this as well.  I decided to turn your images into Styles, just to see what would happen.   I made the styles in the Beta, exported them and then imported them into v. 1.8.4 without a hitch.  So here is the file, in case you would like to see them.   If you would rather not have your images turned into Styles, please feel free to hide this post!

Before I fiddled with your images I experimented with some reptile images from Unsplash, and created a few skin styles from them.  Not a howling success but possible to do.

These are vectors, totally configurable, sublime textures, layering possibilities and colour shifts, all the squares are seamless to. Resolution independent and crafted with a lot of skill and care, StuartRc is a sublime texture artist.

It can be argued that birds are actually dinosaurs, hence my comment about chicken legs.

I like the idea of that, makes for a more colourful dinosaur world. Saw a person a while back making a diorama and they used a kingfishers colours as a swatch for a dinosaurs colouring.

Current research is showing two remarkable things:

  1. Many smaller dinosaurs and even some big ones were brightly coloured at least in part, although this was often confined to the males.
  2. The distinction between birds and dinosaurs is increasingly fuzzy. Many small dinosaurs and even some medium-sized ones had feathers!

Just been reading about this, also read a surprising tidbit of info re velociraptors and their actual size which, contrary to movies like Jurassic park were much smaller than they they are portrayed, the comparable size was "turkey sized" just shows how movies can distort truth.

Stuart is indeed a great texture artist, Dex, but I strongly suspect you didn’t really mean to describe him as “resolution independent and crafted with a lot of skill and care”! 😛

One never knows what one will find stashed away in the depths of one's hard drive when reduced to sprucing it up on a cold, rainy, windy, utterly foul February afternoon.  Hence the cartoon.  Your dinosaur brushes and styles are superb!😷
