  1. Had tried AD for some UX Wireframe stuff for a little Android App, though honestly I'm by far no UX Designer. Afterwards made a functional prototype out of that, which hopefully came close enough. - Well at least it looked somehow similar in the bloody AndroidStudio Emulator. :D
  2. Hello, I have downloaded the iOS UI assets file that comes with AD which is a great showcase of restraints and a great resource, but at my company we design all UI at 1x and the iOS assets are in Retina scale. Scaling doesn't work properly on these assets so I thought I'd make my own collection of UI elements for iOS and Android. How should I save/export the file so that I can import it in the assets panel and use them in any projects? (BTW here's a nice article about the benefits of designing UI at 1x - https://medium.com/shyp-design/design-at-1x-its-a-fact-249c5b896536#.bhxum5ugk) Thanks, Fernando
  3. I'd like to raise awareness to an issue that's bothering me (and apparently a few others) for over a month now. At first I hoped that my muscle-memory would get used to it; but a few hundred raw photos later, it's still as annoying as the first day. I'm referring to the way one can exit/quit/cancel development: it's very counter-intuitive. - It's totally understandable that one cannot proceed editing the image, if it hasn't been developed first. - It's also understandable that the adjustments in the develop persona, cannot be retained, unless the image gets developed. here are the quirks and some workarounds: - If develop persona were implemented as a modal, the Esc key should allow one to... escape. - If develop persona is not a modal and is a window/tab then Cmd+W and Cmd+Q should both allow you to close the document just like pressing the Cancel or X button (of the tab). The current message box when pressing Cmd+Q/W, is not meaningful: it's merely stating that you have to click elsewhere to cancel/close/quit. Why all the hoops and loops? This is particularly inconvenient when having dozens of develop personas open and you decide it's time to quit the application (or close them all). What could had been done with Cmd+Q is now mouse gymnastics! You have to close every develop persona individually, with the mouse, before you can quit the application. - The cancel button, and the X button, shouldn't act differently: As it is, the X button never asks for confirmation, whereas Cancel always does! - when you haven't made any adjustment in the develop persona, canceling should not ask for confirmation. It should be performed silently. - The confirmation should be rephrased. The yes no buttons are not very helpful. Yes, I want to cancel? Yes I understand? Yes I want the file saved? Yes I want it developed? If it were a rare occuring dialog, it would be okay to have and read all the text to know the meaning of Yes/No, but I see this dialog more often than I am asked to save a file, and I guess others too; so the buttons have to be as self-explanatory as possible; or the text as short as possible. eg. "Discard Changes?" Yes/No An example (not the most thought out apparently) follows - it shows two self-explanatory options: "Cancel & Discard" and "resume developing". It could had been "Discard Changes" and "do not discard" or it could even had been 3 buttons such as "Discard Changes", "resume"/"return" and "develop and Save as...", but you get my drift: it needs rephrasing. - Pressing the Esc key while the confirmation is displayed, should work (currently it does nothing). Hope this helps :) -Fotis Now that I got it out of the system,I have to say that I've started to really appreciating the Serif raw engine (and its speed) compared to other raw develop options!!!!
  4. Hello, guys! The following questions are aimed just to pleasure my own curiosity, but you can as well see them as requests. 1. Are you guys planning on bringing some kind of UX prototyping directly in AD? Be it with AD's own tools or opening the program for plugins? I've had AD for a while now and I'm really happy with what it gives me and that raises the question "what next?". I've seen the roadmap on this forum, but I'm really wondering if some UI/UX prototyping is planned at all? Maybe a different persona, maybe a different app? 2. This maybe is something even bigger than UI/UX, but will there be any sort of cloud sync? By any means I know it can't be like CC, but something that syncs our assets like brushes, fonts, etc? As I said, I saw the roadmap and I know that these things aren't there, but the main question is are they considered for future additions? Bottom line - I'm really, really happy with AD. For the past few days I'm doing all of my work inside it and I'm not having any problems at all. Well, I still can't afford the luxury to delete Ps and Ai, mainly because of some work collaborations with people that use them, but if you keep up the good work and if AD continues to improve compatibility with Adobe apps, I can surely see myself buying Photo too and ditching all of the Adobe apps. I hope someone from the devs will give at least some partial info on this :) Have a great day, guys!
  5. Hi, i hear that you want to make some prototyping tool (link). It's great move and if it's will be as great as i hope, i will be jumping meter high with pure joy. I love your Designer and it's very helpful to me. But thinks like prototyping and wireframes is make my life much more easier. Unfortunately now i must thinking out how to make prototypes with only .png or .jpeg files, and it's not very nice think. And i'm not talking about that i can't install any third-party plugins for Designer like Quant-UX or Craft. These programs make my life much more satisfying. I'm very supporting you in this idea, and when this will be done, the Affinity designer will be unstoppable :) I have only few tips for you: 1) please make it more like Quant-UX, it's a great program for prototyping it has logic elements, build-in wireframe widgets, great screen grid with lines connections. (Only bad think is that i can't import my screens from Designer, only as .png) 2) layer animation, please make it, the Principle will be useless than. 3) Fixed header, fixed footer, very useful think 4) Own css, android or ios animations. Lot's of prototyping tools has only standard easing and when you want make some own animation or make material animations it is impossible to make it and than you are stuck because nobody want to see linear animations anymore. 5) Browser testing or live preview. This is indispensable. I want always see prototype in action and if i can't test on demand device it it's useful. The perfect solutions for this was on Pixate, only problem was, that they don't have browser testing, but they have developer tools like Chrome has. I don't want telling you what to do, you are professionals, but maybe will be these tips useful :) I'm really exited about this :D Thank you for your great work!
  6. Just bought Photo and I'm loving it. For what it's worth, here is one of the biggest UX problems I've seen. When I create a new Adjustments layer, I am not able to hit 'enter' 'return' or 'esc' to interact with the dialog. 'return' and 'esc' do work predictably when interacting with the live filters dialog. In general, all these dialogs could use a little more clarity. Like the screenshot, one button in most dialogs often has an outline which signifies you can interact with it with return or space bar etc. As far as I can tell this outline doesnt mean anything. It would be great if there was a visually clear default action, and a key to interact with it. For example, 'enter' would submit and dismiss dialog. 'esc' may cancel. See default Mac dialog attached.
  7. Hi, I've been using Affinity now for two professional projects and it's good. I noticed there are a few panels which can be consolidated to use the same template as the layers panel, this would lower the API surface area and improve maintainability over time. Just my 2 cents.
  8. It would be great if Option + Click in any of the Affinity UI's little collapsable triangle would open or close (depending on current status) ALL the of the panel's other collapsable triangles (at the same hierarchy level when applicable). For example, in the Assets and Layers panels it would be great to have this functionality to quickly view the entire hierarchy or categories instead of scrolling and scrolling. Thanks for your consideration and all you do.
  9. Hi, My company has started using Affinity Designer on the work floor and it's been great! But it got us thinking that a Developer persona would be very useful, where our developers could just click sections and get the full html / css structure, code, just a copy paste away from making it into the code. Maybe allow a view of the flow through the app via arrows so the developer has a good idea of the user-journey through the interface. The persona could also be used to view several states of an object, like an input field that returns and error or a button in a different state. I think this would tie in nicely with the 1.5 release that made interface work in Affinity so much more attractive and improve the flow between designers and developers. Thanks for reading.
  10. There is a shortcut to toggle the transform panel. But somehow it doesn't make the transform panel active. I would expect that it does. Because it would allow us to make transform changes directly from the keyboard without having to click on the transform panel first. There are a few other issues with the transform panel. When using the tab key, a field is selected as expected, but if I want to preform simple math on the value I can't position the cursor before or behind the value using the keyboard: using the left or right arrow keys increases the value! Strange indeed. Adding nudge distance in this panel would be a great timesaver as the preferences is not a good place to store something some of us change quite a lot. I also wonder why moving a duplicate with the nudge distance is not used in Power duplicate? Cheers, Wim

    UI Design with Affinity

Working on a redesign of an app in my company, and I wanted to experiment with Affinity Designer. Having had worked with both Sketch, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, Affinity was the right amount of "strange" I needed. Right between Ps and Ai, with bits of Sketch, it's exactly what I need. I got accustomed to the snapping, and it's a joy to do UI design with it. Especially with Artboards. Very very easy. I'm a bit miffed with the occasional crashes from various sources, but those are going to be history once the beta goes MP and gets released. I've also tested Flinto, Pixate and Principle in parallell with Affinity Designer, and I settled on Principle. Flinto is simply too primitive and has issues with element positioning. Quite the odd UX they got. not a fan. Pixate is a bit complicated and just doesn't cut it in terms of more complicated stuff. Having said that, Principle is still not the best, lacking timelined animation & interaction. What I wanted to see was something along the lines of After Effects Timeline animation but for individual elements, adjustable timeline lenght, etc. I would've wanted to be able to stopwatch parameters of properties and be able to change them (create keyframes in the process). Alas, no. The principle phone client is really primitive. No wireless sharing, you have to be connected. Eugh ! Unfortunately I cannot give more info about the project, nor can I post more screens, because I'd then be in deep trouble. Cheers.
  12. I am excited to share with you the official announcement of my new Affinity Designer course on Lynda.com. It been out for a couple of weeks now and just getting around to sharing with those of you who might of missed it. Much of the course was based on the features found in Affinity 1.4, but I think their a good amount of tips and techniques in this short 1hr and 18 minute course. I made this course for the designer/developer who need to get up to speed on UX/UI specific tools and features fast. Anyway, check it out and again thank you all for your continued interest and support! CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE COURSE Course Description Learn how to incorporate Affinity Designer's features into your own design process. Here Ronnie McBride shows how to set up your preferences, use artboards, create custom color themes in the Swatches panel, apply styles and gradients, and create wire-frames, mock-ups, UI assets, and hero graphics—all with Affinity Designer's versatile tool set. Once you find out what you can do with Affinity Designer, you may never go back to expensive design software again. Topics include:Setting up your preferences and interface Creating new documents Using artboards Creating a wire-frame or mock-up Creating UI assets Exporting for prototyping ` Check out my other titles in my signature below.
  13. First, thank you for making such a promising design program. As someone who has always found Adobe products to be clunky and cumbersome, I've been waiting for over a decade for a viable alternative to emerge. Unfortunately, when I started my trial of Affinity Designer, I was quickly disappointed to find that its modifier keys for proportional and centric resize are different than the macOS standard keys for those operations. Given how much I use proportional resize, this issue alone is nearly a dealbreaker for me and definitely dampened my enthusiasm to try the other features of Designer. The standard keys for resize in macOS are Shift for proportional and Option for centric. These keys are used in all of Apple's own apps (Keynote, Pages, Preview, etc.) as well as the operating system itself. Try resizing any Mac window from its corner while holding Shift and/or Option, and it will resize proportionally and/or centrically. This clearly shows how fundamental this convention is in the Mac UX. All of the Adobe apps on the Mac also follow this convention, as does Microsoft Excel when resizing charts on a worksheet. In fact, I don't know of any Mac apps that don't follow this convention… except for Affinity Designer. Since UI consistency is a key hallmark of the Mac's ease of use, I hope you will see fit to change the modifiers keys to match the standard, or at least give users the ability to set the modifier keys in Preferences. And since resizing objects is such a fundamental feature of any design program, I hope that this fix will be coming very soon. Note that my feedback is based on Affinity Designer trial version 1.4.3, so I don't know if this was already fixed in 1.5. (When will a trial version of 1.5 become available?)
  14. Hi! I was playing with Figma and jumped back to Designer to compare the two. A really good feature that Designer is missing is the ability to snap vector point handles.
  15. Hey, Really like working with AD, at least when it doesn't crash. Which is does now, a lot - like every other minute. Seems mostly when dealing with artboards. Also, to make a crash more annoying, the studio hides and the tools "undock". To re-launch AD after a crash I have to: 1. Launch AD. This launch however, will freeze. 2. Force quit AD. 3. Re-launch AD. 4. Re-dock Tools. 5. Reset Studio. 6. Open the work file. 6. Create a new document and add any shape to the canvas. (This is the only way for the layers in the studio to actually appear.) 7. Close the new document. 8. Get back to work, until it crashes again. 9. Rinse and repeat from step 1. Needless to say, this is EXTREMELY frustrating and time consuming. I would have posted this under bugs, but seems you have closed that forum. Aanyway.... When I sufficiently zoom out, I would really like to see the overlapping artboard labels hidden. There is no point in showing something that looks like this (attached image):
  16. Hello This feature was requested by me when discussing a bug, so now I'm requesting it here at the right place. At the moment, when a user has OSX in a non-english language, the OS offers a translation of certain common font styles like bold, italic, regular etc. In a few applications made by Apple such as Numbers or Pages, and also in the Font Book app, these translations are used when selecting fonts from the fontmenu. Most professional design applications however use the original (non-translated) names in the font selection. At this moment, Affinity applications use the translated names, even though the rest of the user interface is English. I personally think the way OSX translates font styles is quite primitive, and I often encounter fonts where half of the styles are translated in Dutch, while the other half are not translated because the typedesigner chose non-traditional names for these styles. Other design-related applications ignore the OSX translations and use the original style names, which is more practical in a professional environment. As long as Affinity doesn't offer application wide translation, I personally think it's better for Affinity to ignore the OSX translations, because we now get a inconsistent user interface with two languages. I'm looking forward to hear how you think about this.
  17. Hi New users (or demo users) of AP ask again and again where they can find the inpainting brush - and that's only the ones bothering to create a forum account for that question. I think it would help a lot if it was the default tool of the healing group.

    Built in templates

Hi there, firstly, affinity Designer is simply amazing!! I do apologise for this question if it has already been answered, I did have a look through the pages and never saw it. I want to know if Affinity designer would ever have pre built in design templates for UI and Icon Design? I create a lot of iOS and Android icons and design user interfaces for mobile apps also, it would be super cool if Affinity had a preset iOS, Mac OS and Android icon template as well as standardised UI frameworks built in to speed up my design process. If this is not a feature to be considered, is it possible for me to create these frameworks myself and have them stored ready to use when I need them? Thanks
  19. Hey guys, More UI work. Let me know what you think. https://www.behance.net/gallery/37180653/Android-Weather-App Cheers, Vlad
  20. It seems like Affinity is focusing a lot on features, which I guess is important for the competition, but it seems like as soon as something is done there's no polishing done. My absolute biggest problem right now is the export persona and how it doesn't save settings between exports, how has this been allowed to be broken for over a year? I'm currently trying to move over from Creative Cloud but things like this make it impossible.
  21. Update Dropdown What I did was think about components and what parts belong to what. And for this model to be clear from the UI / UX perspective, it means that the other colour options should be separated into their own panels due to their unique attributes. In my experience, I would recommend removing the colour wheel--it adds no functionality that the sliders can't provide and adds a level of complexity to maintain in the long run. I can't keep working for free, so, this is it from me. ----- Previous -----
  22. Hi, I often have problems to read the histogram with overlapping curves. Its hard to see which channel is responsible for the white curves. I think Apple Photos is doing it better as it always shows the curve outlines in the channel color.

    Trackpad sensitivity

Hi, I'm calling this a bug, because similar apps don't display the same problem (Illustrator, InDesign, Skecth, etc). When scaling text using a two finger gesture on the trackpad, Affinity doesn't seem to know when I've left go/stopped. It always seems to nudge the text another point up or down. In other applications, when I stop moving and let go of the trackpad, it stops modifying the number. I'd get over it if there were sliders or I could use the keyboard arrows, but as it stands I'm hitting CMD+Shift+Option+> just to increase a point size. Thanks for reading.

    FoodJunky UI Project

Hi guys, Latest project made entirely in affinity. Except the gif animation. https://www.behance.net/gallery/33966100/FoodJunky-Application-Design-Concept Cheers, Vlad
  25. Hi I looked at the FAQ list and this is a more hands-on subject, but it's still a real FAQ: Time and again new users ask in the questions forum * why they can't get the inpainting brush tool (and others) to work. The answer is: you have a wrong layer selected. I'm quite sure the question arises so often because some adjustments (like levels) create a correction layer without the user noticing. So it also affects people who aren't actively using layers yet. Feature request: could you add a warning when people try to use inpainting on a wrong layer? * and this are the ones bothering to register in the forum and start a thread
