  1. Independent commercial fishermen have lost a huge chunk of their market due to lockdowns around the world. Support local fishermen; eat seafood. This piece was inspired by Zutto. Found her amazing work through Affinity's Spotlight blog. (Yes, I’ve been mulling over her bubbly style for quite a while now; The date on that blog post is January 2019 😅) It was a little challenging to translate the more liquid style to something with very symmetrical, defined structure. It probably would have worked better if I hadn't done a head-on view of the crab so that the legs were overlapping. Ah well. Onwards and upwards. Drawn on iPad Pro with Apple Pencil.
  2. Hello all, this is my first post to the forum. I've been a happy Affinity user so far (well, I still am... I own Designer and Photo, both for Windows) and I work on a Windows 8.1 Bootcamp partition on a 2011 MacBook pro (yep, THAT old). In the last weeks though, a problem occurred twice: Affinity Designer (1.8.3.641) apparently saved correctly my file, but the next day while trying to open it again I got an error and the file does not open again. After the first time (an unpleasant surprise), I searched the forum and a few posts pointed to a potential drive corruption but I checked my SSD and it's ok. I should add here that the drive I'm saving to is in the Mac partition and managed in Windows through MacDrive (I am using this setup since 2011 and I never had any issues with any program, Affinity Designer and Photo included). Fortunately, for the first case I had a recent backup and I was able to recover most of the work done. But the second time happened after a particularly productive day finishing late at night, so I stupidly didn't do a backup. In both cases there were no warning signs: Designer seems to save correctly, there was no weird behaviour from the computer or the operating system themselves, everything looked like it all went well. Except, the next day the files were suddenly not opening anymore. Also, there are no related files in the AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Designer\ folders and subfolders (there was a crash report from 2019, but nothing more recent). The errors were different in the two cases: "The file type is not supported" and "The file appears to be corrupted". I am attaching here the file that generated the "corrupted" error (for some reason the upload of the other file fails even though it's just a little above 1 Mb) in the hope something can be done or that at least some light can be shed on the cause and maybe have potential fixes in future versions. Than you in advance for the support! Alessio froGH_icons_20200427_problem-corrupted.afdesign
  3. I am using Affinity designer Mac and have done for years. I am no expert but know enough to get the things I need to done. When I use the move tool or shape tools they work as normal but all other tools freeze at the edge of the canvas and you can not see the cursor until it reaches the other side and reappears. I have reset everything, restarted my mac, reinstalled the software and nothing helps me. The software has become totally unusable. I have searched but not found anyone that has the same problem. I have not included a screenshot as it looks normal in a screenshot but it is not I would really appreciate some help. Thank you.
  4. Hi, everybody, I'm a new customer! I took advantage of the "homeworking" discount this period! I had already tried Designer but now I can finally work on it. I'm trying to understand how he thinks in the combination of shapes, since I'm not a Master in graphics, I can't understand how to create this simple pencil shape so that it's 1 shape only! I attach a gif, I'm stuck, I can't figure out what to do so that the two vertical lines of the pencil remain (the ones in the middle). I've tried dozens of different ways, with curves without curves, with shapes, booleans...😰 Where am I wrong? Thank you very much. pencil.afdesign
  5. I'm having problems with symbols in a design; all but one of the copies is updating. I have created a template with several artboards for different versions of social media images. Part of the design has the text 'WEEK XX'. I have created a symbol and copied across four of the artboards. That's fine, they all update in unison. I have created a fifth copy, which I needed to change to title case and add a drop shadow. I disabled sync to do this and made the changes. Even after enabling sync again, it doesn't update with the rest. The symbol attributes show Unlinked Transform/Constraints but the text itself shows Unlinked Layer Effects, Text, Text Frame. I have tried different variations as it was initially the reverse; having spawned four copies from the title case version, the four refused to update. Can anyone shed some light on this?
  6. Hey! A transit map of a near future light rail letbane system in Odense, Denmark Phase 1 in green is near opening. The stations are fixed. Phase 2 in turquoise is not yet fixed and a bit speculative. Constructive feedback appreciated. Chris
  7. Finally, it is published 🙂 (for a non-profit association ; difficult time too for non-profit associations all over the world but that's nothing of course compared to the suffering of many). All photographs and graphics in this book have been edited and designed mainly in APhoto and AD. I had to import them in Photoshop for a final exportation with the right colour profile that the Affinity suite can't (still) handle properly. You may recognize some screenshots of photographs I had posted here. It's still too bad I couldn't use APublisher. I patiently waited for the availability of this desktop publishing app, I tested it and even finished the layout of this book but was “defeated” by its general instability, its poor colour management, its inability to handle a specific colour profile,... maybe for a next one ? Before book binding and after binding :
  8. Hi Affinity Team Have finally jumped in the deep end and am having loads of fun "learning while creating" in Affinity Designer. An amazing bit of software which I'm already enjoying far more than Illustrator! I just wrapped up creating some simple illustrations for my kids school, but have run into a serious PDF rendering issue of my files. Each PDF saved, displays strange blocks across my illustrations or has sections where content is missing. This is very troubling, as I have no way of being able to export a vector version of my work. My only temporary solution is saving the images as high-res PNG files, which thankfully do render correctly. I have included a side-by-side comparison of a PDF and PNG export of one of the illustrations, so you can see what is frustrating me. The PDF illustration was saved as PDF (digital - high quality) Is there a simple fix for this problem? Have currently tried all the different PDF saving/exporting options, with the same results. I am running version 1.8.3.641 of Designer on my PC. Hope you can help!
  9. I think everyone does at least one howling wolf. I decided to get it out of the way first. Inspired by many that came before it.

  13. I’m a fashion student so do a lot of my technical drawings on this app, however I’m having trouble exporting them. SVG is really the only file that when exported still gives me crisp clear lines but recently I’ve started having issues I’ve attached an example of one of my drawings vs what happens when it exports, ill export it as an svg (for export) and ill go into my files and it will look completely fine within a few minutes I go back to see if it’s all good and I’m left with either nothing or one small part of a drawing . I’d appreciate any help or advice on this issue I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if there is something else I can export it as without compromising the quality? I’ve attached screenshots below.

  16. Hello, any eye-dea what I've done wrong on this? All pupils were created using the brush tool, I don't remember doing anything different, however this is my first project using Affinity and I have done most of it through trial and error (love it, btw!). The top character's pupils are pixellated on export, but the bottom ones are fine. If I copy the pupils from character 2 to character 1, it fixes the problem, so I'm curious what I've done wrong. I've had a few friends open the file on their computers to check it's not just my PDF software but they see the same issue. Both lines seem to have the same stoke details: Thanks! Anna
  17. Hello, I was struggling for hours trying to create a macOS Application Icon Set from an SVG with Affinity Designer (v1.8.3). I went to Export Persona > Slices > Batch builder and select "Xcode JSON: macOS Application Icon" and I just could not figure out what to do next to actually export the icon set. There is no help or topic on how to make it work. Accidentally, I found that after selecting the "Xcode JSON: macOS Application Icon" option in "Batch builder" dropdown, I next must select "OSX Application Icon" in "Export preset" dropdown: Just having done these steps I could click the little export button on the right to finally export the complete icon set. What if Affinity Designer would auto select the related "Export preset" for options in "Batch builder" dropdown? Or what if there should not be any "Export preset" selected for Batch builder jobs? The batch should work just without any other option selected... Could you improve the Batch builder feature and ease our work experience, please? Hope this feature request makes sense for all Affinity Designer users. Devy
  18. I am trying to learn CG illustration, this is totally different to the way I used to paint. That's more similar to oil painting, but I have no idea about that. I only tried watercolour before. But I‘d love to try new things, it's feel so good for now, especially drawing the light, the shadow and the grey part.
  19. Designer 1.8.3.641 on Windows 10 Home 1909. See my attached short video for some unexpected results after using the Divide function on two simple shapes. First application: Additional circle is created and rectangle has no hole. Second application: Shapes divided as expected leaving circle and rectangle with hole. Third application: Shape with no form created while rectangle has expected hole. Original file is also attached. 2020-05-07 12-28-23.mp4 unusual divide results.afdesign
  20. Using now Designer the first time and Publisher for quite a while, I realize some issues with export into pdf. Seems like the pdf mostly need double the size at least to appear sharp as it seems to be inside the app itself. Exported the files may look to have to little resolution and the jpgs look much better. Had the same with export as SVG as well. What do I have to look after to avoid these issues? In my experience when I use certain pixel measurements it should export in the same resolution as pdf/svg/png, shouldn`t it?
  21. The other day I suddenly thought I ought to make something to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day, remembering the Allies' victory in Europe in the Second World War. Unusually for me, the design came into my head in almost finished form, illustrating lines from the chorus of Vera Lynn's famous song, (There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover. I thought I'd share it here before I post it on social media. I Googled a few photos for guidance as I'm not brilliant at drawing completely from scratch, and made up some vector illustrations almost entirely with the Pen tool (rather than starting with shapes, my usual method), switching between Designer and Photo and back as I went along. The wavy text I made by rasterising Artistic Text and applying the Mesh Warp tool: turning on the grid made sure I applied the distortion evenly. The leaves and clouds are simply Cloud shapes, while the flowers I did with a pixel brush on layers clipped to their vector layers. Finally, the VE Day 75 logo is easy to find online, but only in pixel format, so I downloaded one and made up a vector version. The letters are Arial Black, but the numerals aren't: I couldn't find a close enough match in the fonts I have, so I made them as vectors too. (BTW, I'm not forgetting the war against Japan. I'll see what appears.) This was originally A2 in size, but I've reduced it for posting ... VE-DAY-LOGO.afdesign
  22. After a complex vector-brush drawing I'm having problem selecting the line/layer I want to edit. I understand that there is a layer system, but is there a trick or workhabit to make it more easy to select the right item in a busy vector creation? Cheers.
  23. Hi there! Seeing the latest Reaction on Facebook and how it's very good meme material, I decided to do a little excercise and redraw it, with a little change... I attached the source file (the heart is included there if you want to use it). Best regards! Affinity Me.afdesign
