Dear Forum, I am relatively new to Affinity Publisher and am working on newsletters and a compilation of equipment collections with data merged from an EXCEL sheet. I am so glad I found MikeTO's user guide - and thanks for such a responsive forum! In the following I describe features/observations which I could not find or apply correctly, maybe you could give me some pointers: Artistic Text: define a fixed size text frame and allow the font size to adjust filling the given text frame Running Header: I get unpredictable results with the running header field on a document page if the specific text style occurs in an artistic text frame (sometimes works, mostly not: field remains empty). No problem with regular text field. Running header field adds a new line after filling the field and before next entry in the text frame, unless a termination character is added in the running header text - by design? That took me a while to figure out. Master pages: Can I find out which Master page was applied to a specific page and if it was modified? Will 'Clear Master' clear all masters applied to the document page? How can I re-apply a master to a document page which had previously been changed (detached) but want to go back to the master page? Apply-Master will not change the changed properties Parameters for Text wrap around newly inserted frames/images, currently always defaults to 'none'. I use a 'square' with .04" margins most of the time, would be helpful to set a default for that. (In case of the newsletter picture frames are not in the master page, as they vary in number, size and location from issue to issue) 'Unprintable text' in a Master page text box, which only serves as an instruction for the content but does not print or show in preview mode on the document page. If no text is entered, the field stays empty. I use a custom field as a workaround (by emptying the field value before publishing). Legend under or above an image frame. I use a text box and group it with the image, but resizing will change the font and size of the text box in vertical direction, even if I select 'lock' in the transform panel. A means to clearly indicate that one edits the Master page instead of the document pages (green bar?) or is this just a beginners mistake? Enter discrete zoom level when manipulating images in an image frame, rather than the slider. Enable page-up/down keys in editing. Remember zoom setting when opening an existing project - it defaults to 'fit on screen' which is not suited for the newsletter - Thank you and a happy Holiday Season!

Let's go back to school, with some of those common and well known school protractors for measuring in degrees. ... etc. The protractor assets shared here ... ... are all vector based and do have printed on degree scales. You have to adapt/size the default assets protractor sizes to your document needs and thus scale them up/down so they nearly match your doc measurements. Note that all protractors are just a bunch of grouped/layered together vector parts (curves and text) thus they can be modified in colorings and the like. Also you should always move & size etc. a whole reused protractor group/layer when needed! Here is the associated assets file: protractors.afassets Have a nice school day!

There are three ways I have found to do this, the first in A.Designer, and two ways in A.Pub. from which the results can be copied and pasted into A.Designer or Photo. Method 1 is to do as you were doing. Create a Text Frame and Rectangle. Colour the rectangle. Group the two of them and add the group to your Assets panel. Grouped objects resize together using the extended handle on the bottom right corner. Method 2 is show the window/panel/studio for Text Frame in which you define the frame and fill colour. The frame still needs to be adjusted in size if the text overflows. Method 3 is to show the window/panel/studio for Text Style and define a style for say "My Boxed Text" and edit the style's Decoration panel (bottom in the list of edit options). The box thus defined will grow to surround text that overflows from its text frame. Hope this helps anyone with the same query.

Hallo Grizeto Dein Eintrag ist zwar schon eine Weile her. Aber … Als Erstes habe ich an einen Fehler bei den schmalen Leerzeichen vermutet. Beim längeren Testen bin ich dann auf zwei Fehler gestossen. Silbentrennung falsch eingestellt. Da musste ich noch länger suchen. Durch die Einstellung wird je nach Situation der Cursor verschoben. Die Silbentrennung wurde im Gruppenstil «Impuls Rot» gesetzt und in den unteren Stilen übernommen. Im Blocksatz verwende ich bei den letzten vier Einträgen immer 0 mm. Fehler beim Erstellen der Textrahmen Dies ist beim Aufbau des Layouts passiert. Beim Erstellen der Textrahmen auf der Masterseite wurde der Anfasser unten rechts verwendet. Dieser Anfasser skaliert den Rahmen und den Inhalt. Wenn nun Text in eine neue Spalte fliesst, stimmt die Skalierung nicht mehr (der Text ist z.B. viel zu klein). Wichtig! Für Grössenänderungen von Textrahmen bei Fliesstexten nur mit den Anfassern der Textrahmen verändern. Textrahmenskalierung.mp4 Hello Grizeto Your entry was a while ago. But ... The first thing I suspected was an error with the narrow spaces. After testing for a while, I came across two errors. Hyphenation set incorrectly. I had to search even longer. The setting moves the cursor depending on the situation. The hyphenation was set in the group style "Impulse Red" and adopted in the lower styles. In justified text, I always use 0 mm for the last four entries. Error when creating the text frames This happened when setting up the layout. When the text frames were created on the master page, the bottom right handle was used. This handle scales the frame and the content. If text now flows into a new column, the scaling is no longer correct (e.g. the text is much too small). Important! To change the size of text frames for continuous text, only use the text frame handles.

Hi @Warpspace, I'm glad the files are working for you when copying them... There is a text scaling bug/issue in the apps which means if you have a text frame containing text at the document resolution and then you change the dpi of a document, say from 300 dpi to 150 dpi or to 600 dpi, save it an reopen it and then create a new text frame and flow the text from the original text frame to the new text frame the text in the new text frame is scaled by the document resolution increase or decrease. This means that when you have pinned objects and the resolution of the document has been changed and the document is saved, closed and reopened, when you duplicate or copy and paste the text frame or the group of items containing the text frame the scaling you're seeing occurs. The workaround for your files is to delete the text frame containing the dpi text in both the 150 dpi and 600 dpi files and recreate them at their native document resolution. Then when saved and reopened the pinned objects won't scale because there is effectively no change in resolution, i.e., the 150 dpi text frame was 'created' in a 150 dpi document and likewise the 600 dpi text frame was 'created' in a 600 dpi document. A simple test to demonstrate the issue... Create a 300 dpi Publisher document, add a text frame and some editable filler text Change the document dpi from 300 dpi to 150 dpi in the Document Settings dialog Save, close and reopen the file Add a second text frame to the same page Reduce the height of the first text frame so you now have overflow text in the first text frame Link the first text frame to the second text frame and you will see the text point size increases based on the decrease in document resolution Likewise, repeat steps 1 to 6 above but at step two increase the document resolution from 300 dpi to 600 dpi and you will this time see the text point size decrease based on the increase in document resolution.

Affinity Publisher, v2.2.0, Windows 10 Home While text wrapping works correctly/as expected with masked objects, only wrapping around the visible part, when the masked object is part of a group, text wrapping applied to the group does not work correctly. The expected behavior would be to have the text wrap the masked portion only, the same as before. Instead, when you apply text wrapping to a group with a masked object in it, the text wraps around the original size of the masked image, as if it were unmasked. This bug is reproducible and occurs with new documents. I have attached a screen capture of the problem. The "Group (Text Wrap)" has the text wrap on. Nothing else has text wrap applied to it. I would first use the Art Text tool and size the text for the height needed for the largest letters (the furthest left and right letters). Then I would use the Layer > Warp Group > Quad and push up from the bottom middle.

I want to reduce the dimensions of a group. I have a group that contains multiple layers. I can alter the dimensions of the group by selecting the move tool, selecting a group, selecting a corner of the blue bounding box of that group and moving the mouse. This works for any given object. However, when I do this with a group, not every object within the group has it's dimensions altered. As a result, attempting to alter the dimensions of the object results in a bit of mess. The group that I'm working on presently contains text. The text retains it's size as all other objects in the group change size. What can I do to scale the text and all other contained objects as I resize the group?

It is possible to link a group with text or just plain text object to another object and transforms work correctly when resizing with the object handles. However, if the object size changes due to a text change, then it does not sync. Attached sample: Modify either object by handles and it resizes in sync. I must admit, I am not sure if this is possible at all. • It will work well and reliable with Picture Frames: If you create an image file for each product name (in its according pixel width) then you could use that images with data merge and get them auto-filling a Picture Frame of a certain size.

Hello all! Contrary to usual belief that only Adobe XD, Figma, Invision are great at UI design, I have a strong feeling that Affinity Designer has more scope to grow because it has a lot more to offer. Designer is intuitive, has WAY MORE control over curves than the popular UI design tools and is a complete design software while the others just barely are one. Affinity sure doesn't have prototyping, but otherwise it is a killer application for UI development, because I get to work with things as small as the pixel perfection of icons in the UI to something as broad as having symbols, constraints and even re-usable assets. According to me, Adobe XD, Figma, etc., are "Tools" but Affinity Designer feels like a (end-to-end) "Solution" to all UI design needs. But I believe there are two little things that Affinity Designer currently needs to do to make the life of a UI designer better: 1. Auto Layout: Affinity's Constraints feature is amazing. It is simple yet very effective when it comes to UI design in Affinity Designer. But it lacks when I add text, that will be changed at different instances, as an element inside constraint group. The text flows into the group and there is no option to set the basic padding beyond which the container resizes according to the height/width of the text that is set to auto layout. Same thing happens when I need any design element to resize according to the padding and not just as a relative size of the parent container. 2.Design System Library: This is a simple one. I'm not sure if this is very important but here I go. I know .afassets, .afpalatte & .afbrushes exist. But it will be awesome if we can combine those files and send it out as one file, a .aflibrary for example, that when loaded, loads up the .afassets, .afpalatte & more at once. This could also mean something to other designers as well. Say the designer develops a icon system, brush style, color palatte and a highlighting system (quotations and more) for a book, he/she, just has to send the ".aflibrary" file to a co-designer (or even if he/she sells that design system) that loads all the required assets into the respective panes at once. Wouldn't this additionally require a fill colour for every page or text frame to get the document's paper white (= transparent) turned to black on export? Also the adjustment would cause rasterization of all text on export and thus might reduce the readability and result in quite a large PDF file size. Just in case: To make it work the adjustment layer needs to be nested in a Group layer on its Master Page to affect the document pages.

I am trying to wrap text around a cropped image, but it is wrapping the text around the original image size/outline. I want it to wrap around only the visible cropped area. When I check the text wrap outline, it shows the outline of the original image. I know I can edit the outline by hand, but there has to be a faster way. I tried resetting the wrap outline, and it changes to the cropped area, but it doesn't stick. I have attached a file with the problematic elements. I should note that I'm setting the text wrap at a group level, while the image that is cropped is part of that group. Extra Credit: What does reset wrap outline do? Hi, I know Photoshop does this and I understand why this is being requested but in my opinion it isn't a good idea for a page layout app like Publisher and all three apps need to work largely the same way. Imagine an artistic text object is in a vector warp group that is layered over a text frame. The text in the frame is wrapped around the group. Now as you quickly scroll through a list of hundreds of fonts, the size of the artistic text object changes which impacts the warp group and enclosing group, causing all the text in the underlying frame to be reflowed around the group's changed dimensions. Now imagine that the artistic text in the vector warp group is a mask layer for a photo so as you scroll through the list of fonts, Publisher has to not only reflow the text around it, it has to reveal a different portion of the masked layer. It would work but IMO it might be a poor user experience. Part of the need could be addressed by allowing us to customize the sample text in the font menu but I know this doesn't fully meet the need.

Wanted to see what would happen with the Windows 10 Sitka fonts (4 TTC files). Six optical sizes with two weights, Regular and Bold, plus the italics. The optical sizes are: Small, Text, Subheading, Heading, Display, and Banner Six R/I/B/BI style groups - one for each optical size. On Windows 10, Sitka comes in four TTC font collection files - grouped by R/I/B/BI. So all Regular styles for the six various optical sizes are in Sitka.ttc. All Italic styles for the six optical sizes are in SitkaI.ttc. All Bold styles for the six optical sizes are in SitkaB.ttc. All Bold Italic styles for the six optical sizes are in SitkaZ.ttc. I suspected that this may confuse APub, and it did. First, when I pasted the correct working text from LibreOffice into APub, all of the various Sitka font optical sizes (groups) were changed to Sitka Small. Italic and Bold still applied - but all optical sizes were now the just Small font styles. So I selected each of the other optical size four-line R/I/B/BI groups and applied the correct family/group - Text, Subheading, Heading, Display, and Banner - with the intention to use the Bold and Italic buttons to finish the corrections. But noooooooo... The Bold and Italic buttons instantly turned the family/group back to Small. So for example highlight some Sitka Display text and press the Italic button and you now have Sitka Small Italic. So I used the Font Style dropdown to apply all the correct styles, and that seemed to stick - the PDF output is correct. But do not touch a Bold or Italic button or it will all return to Small. Affinity wacko style group handling strikes again. The image below is APub Export to PDF, and then exported to PNG from PDF-XChange Editor. Note: This is on Windows 10 where Sitka is supplied as four TTC files. On Windows 11 Sitka is supplied as two variable fonts, Regular and Italic. Hmmm... let's see how it does with the Recursive TTC file - four families, eight weights, plus italics - 64 fonts... that should be fun.

"only"? I am unsure what you want to express exactly. – However, as illustrated there are various ways to achieve parent & nested child layers. "Constraints" are rather helpful for more complex layouts, where usually more than two objects should maintain specific position or size while others should respect different or even none when their parent container gets resized. The easiest (just 1 layer) would be to convert the button shape into a text frame (the yellow sample above) – but unfortunately it works well in APub while it lacks in AD in the missing access to the fill colour of the object, which gets lost once you convert the rounded rectangle object into a text shape object. Also the pinning feature is not available in AD but APub only. So it seems the normal Group (not Constraints) or a layer of type "Layer" would be the most effective workflow here. Just make sure not to use the Art Text Tool but the Frame Text Tool for the initial text creation – otherwise the text will get stretched when the group gets resized. And make use of the text alignment options within the text frames to maintain the left or centred position when the group layer gets widened. Note: in the video below the selection of 4 separate layers was just done to make the 4 bounding boxes visible. The file was 29Mb finished. I am using the same master pages, and this year I am data merging and making the merged pages as I go, and at only 10 pages, the file is 163Mb. The key difference is last year was using Publisher V1, and not data merging with the same OS and hardware. I have a Master page with a Data Merge Layer (created with the Data merge layout tool with 4 columns x 31 rows). The merge layer has 4 fields mapped - each in a text frame. The data merge works sucessfully, and generates an untitled publisher file with the resultant page populated. This is saved as untitled.afpub. I add the merged page into my publisher file [Document | Add pages from file]. This is also successful. I add another master page to this (header, footer and left index). This works. This makes a month summary page. save... 3 Observations: Importing the merged page also adds a duplicate of the master page [exact same name as the original] image attached. The file size doubles after adding a new merged page. The file started as a 5Mb file, and is now 163Mb with 9 pages. There are no images, backgrounds or heavily filled tables. Each of the 31x4 fields is turned into a group in the merged page. The save and open times are getting exponentially longer as the file grows - making it impossible to keep adding pages via data merge. The plan is to add the 12 month pages manually with data merge (got 10 done), then a month of daily pages with one daily merge Master... It may take me until 2024 to get this done. Hi! I am trying to group several text frames together, but when I do so the font size changes. How can I group text frames without changing the font size?

I bought the full suite about a week or two ago and I love it. I worked mostly on the Photo app and today I saw the Designer one, but almost everything I needed to do so far was very intuitive and if I couldn't figure it out, it was a quick search online. So to between these apps, and Apple's FCPX, Motion and Logic Pro X, I'm really happy to have an Adobe free Mac, for such an affordable price. These apps feel fresh and new, Photoshop and Illustrator are ancient apps that keep being patched and some things added to them, but feel old and slow. Now, this is puzzling to me, and now I'm beginning to doubt that it was the way I thought. Last weekend I started a simple project that consists of a lot of rectangles with a text box inside. The rectangles are exactly the same in size, stroke color, opacity, etc. The text box is also the same size, the only thing that is different is the text itself. So the first thing I did was to create a rectangle of the size I needed, then the text box inside, and once I was happy with how it looked, I grouped them and started duplicating them until I had as many as I needed, and then I started editing the text in each of them. This would've been a project more for Designer, but I had hear about the Photo app, and I'm more familiar with Photoshop than Illustrator, so I got the trial for Photo, and I started this project in it. When I saw how good the software was, I bought the full suite and today I opened this in Designer, but the same problem happens in both. Last weekend, working in the Photo app, when I selected all the groups in the layers panel, then right clicked and selected Expand Selection, it showed me each group, containing the text layer and the rectangle layer, called Rectangle. So since there were a lot of rectangles and I needed to edit the size of several to the same dimensions, I eventually found the "select same name" command, which as far as I remember, selected all the layers called "Rectangle". So, today I loaded that project again after a week or so, and I want to change the size of the rectangles. But, today when I expand all the groups and click on the Rectangle layer in any group, then right click and choose "select same name", it selects the groups, not the rectangle layers. So if I change the size in the transform panel, it also changes the size of the text layer, basically making it fatter because I only need to change the width. I thought it was a glitch, so I closed Affinity Photo, reopened it, same thing. I saw a menu command to open the document in Designer, so I did that too, saved it as a Designer document, but the same behavior happens in it. In fact, Designer has that extra thing where you can do a Select Same and it has tons of options, super useful, but no matter what I choose there, like shape, stroke, color, etc, it always ends up selecting the group, and not the "Rectangle" layers. So, this is not a sarcastic question, because I really have memory issues. But, am I going crazy and remembering the "select same name" behavior wrong from just one week ago? Or is there a toggle somewhere that I accidentally enabled or disabled? I've been looking for over an hour, and I can select all the rectangles manually, but this is more to learn than anything.
