    Hey Umiama,
I'm afraid these fixes will only be available for V2 of the software.

Hi @Chris B! Actually what aji means is not about tablet API but the brush's accumulation control, what Accu. now acts almost the same as Flow. in Affinity 1.9.

Another question: What does 'Pointer' mean in Preferences dialog -> User Interface? For some reasons I use my modified language resources.
I want to know if it was pointer device like trackpad or just mouse cursor. Thanks!

Just tried the latest beta from yesterday, the bug still persists. I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer until they get to it.

How's it going now? I've checked every update note since 1.9 and found no information about this.

I was able to reproduce some of brush issues consistently. I'm on a Mac though, but just to mention. The main issues I experience are described here

And here about jagged lines, mainly due to zoom levels:

Umiama reacted to ZufDraw in This is what's wrong with the brush in affinity photo
I've had a hard time adjusting the brush to act in a natural way for drawing. I've compared with mainly photoshop and sketchbook pro and posted numerous reports about this. There are a few issues like jagged lines on low zoom levels and general inconsistent behaviour of hardness and size. Things you only notice when drawing or writing by hand on a tablet or Cintiq.
Now I think I found what causes the latter! I was able to isolate what is going on by setting the shape to a narrow ellipse and the stroke to large spacing. Look what the preview shows. There are 2 things going on here:
1 Inconsistent size toward the beginning/ending of the stroke, causing a sort of 'arrow head' effect
2 The increase of the amount of dots towards the ending is too steep. Meaning the spacing between the dots in the end is near zero and in the middle pretty large. Some decay in spacing is useful since the relative spacing between dots should stay the same. But it seems that AP does not take the dot size into account and at certain settings the decay is much to steep, causing too many dots to overlap. I noticed that in photoshop and sketchbook pro this decay is far less and generally in better balance with the shape size. This presumably results in their smoother line behaviour. One result of this steep decay in AP is that soft lines are much harder in the endings than in the middle and pressure sensitivity feels a bit 'off'.
All in all this explains the strange behaviour I was experiencing. This arrowhead effect is nearly invisible in the preview when the shapes are rounder, but in practice I always notice the inconsistent line behaviour because of this.
    Affinity photo:

A drawn line to show it's not just the preview:

    photoshop:

    sketchbook

lastly look at this soft line and how hard it gets near the endings. The steep decrease of dot spacing is what causes this.

In all examples these are the dynamics settings:

In my opinion two things need to change:
1 The arrow head behaviour is just off and needs to be fixed.
2 The spacing between the dots needs to be rebalanced in order to have a consistent line behaviour throughout different settings of spacing, dynamics, hardness etc. Generally speaking the dot SPACING needs to be in balance with the dot SIZE and SHAPE. E.g. the thinner part of a pressure sensitive line should be equally soft as the broader part of the line. Also when pressure sensitivity is set to linear, the line thickness change should also be linear. This is currently not the case and my guess is the inconsistent dot spacing causes this.
I hope this helps refine the brush behaviour for AP!

SOLVED: Answering my own question. I tested an older driver from Huion. First I uninstalled the latest driver and then dowloaded and installed driver v14.7.154.586.
Did enable WIndows Ink only and did not tick on mouse mode or game mode. At least on the first tests, I can see the pressure sensitivity now recognised in Affinity Designer.
I am on AD 1.9.2.1035 and Windows 7.
Posting in case it helps someone.

As @Komatös says, please check your graphics drivers are up to date.  A system crash implies a problem with the drivers, not necessarily in Affinity Photo. If it was just APhoto, then it alone would crash and would not be able to take Windows with it.

@ian kelsall I see you are using Avast Anti-Virus. There are so many tasks running in the background that it is possible that there are memory collisions.
To rule this out, you should deactivate Avast on a trial basis.
It may be that there have been no problems so far, but with the amount of images in the asset, it could be possible.

    Hi Xiphien,
first of all welcome to the forum.
It's propably a bit unfortunate to start your first post with such a rant. Despite the fact one can extract understandable issues from your post the majority of readers will react defensive or agressive like Mia.
You are picking on a long term critisized topic where the affinity guys tend to have "little sense" for: the workflow. I'm with AP now for roughly 5 years (getting away from any Adobe product) and been trying to support, critisize and bring in ideas. Many things did not make their way into the product - dome did. And by the time I got an undestanding what is helpful to report and what not.
    - When you struggle with any kind of behaviour you will always find someone here (even from the Affinity support) that will be helpful and explain things (even if the answer can easily be found in Google)
    - When you found a bug you will always get feedback (or people showing you what to do better to overcome the bug or to tell you that it's not a bug but a feature "by design") - In many cases expect them to seriously work on a bugfix for the next or upcoming version if the bug can be tracked (meaning: asap).
    - When you have suggestions for new features or how you would like to see things change put it in the "suggestion" section in the forum. Don't expect any Affinity answer - they don't comment on suggestion or future development (maybe people agreeing with you or pointing out a workaround)
    - Don't bother to mention workflow improvements since it propably is the only thing that will have no effect on development at all. From my experience even crucial topics in workflow haven been ignored for 5 years. There seems to be quite a strong force behind affinity to keep some things as initially invented and not willing to learn or change. Mayby internal changes would be to significant to change things without a major release.
So my recommendation would be to kindly ask for support when you struggle with something. Put each question in a single topic post and put things in the right forum. As Alfred already mentioned trhis is the beta forum and your rant propably more belongs to the general forum

And always keep in mind: it's not as bad as it seems and you'll get used to some new things - old habbits can be a struggle sometime
    Cheers, Timo

I think some of the differences in behaviour might have to do with the default brushes that you are using. They are a bit wonky and the brush settings in Affinity are not quite the same as the defaults in Photoshop. I personally changed the basic brushes to behave more like the Photoshop ones. Could you try my brush pack that I have posted here and see if the round brushes I made feel better? Here's a video example of how my custom brushes look and behave as a frame of reference (this is without Stabilizer btw).

    Sorry, I missed that part. Just woke up, so my brain isn't completely there, lol. ^^;
Do you have a way to record your screen and post a video of the problem in question? I also use a Wacom tablet (Cintiq 13" HD), but I can't really replicate your issue it seems.

Umiama reacted to Komatös in 3 Steps to check if Affinity Photo crash!
Many users complain that Affinity Photo does not open files or/and cannot create new files and it comes to quitting the programme without an error message.
There are three steps you can take to check in advance whether it is Affinity Photo, outdated drivers or problems with Windows or .NET.
    Step 1
Check whether there are up-to-date system drivers and/or graphics card drivers.
    Step 2
Make sure that the hardware acceleration (OpenCL) is deactivated. Edit -> Settings -> Performance
    Step 3
Check if Windows has problems with various .NET and/or other VBA/C++ modules. To do this, work through the following steps.
Windows 10 in running mode can be checked and also repaired with the help of the command prompt (cmd.exe) and the DISM commands.
And this is how it works:
Enter Command Prompt or cmd.exe in the taskbar search and start it by right-clicking "As administrator" or by holding down Ctrl + Shift.
    C:\Windows\system32\ appears.
Check if there are errors in the registry:
Copy Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth by right-clicking and paste into the prompt by right-clicking.
Scan data sets (partition) for errors
Copy Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth with a right-click and paste it into the command prompt with a right-click.
Scan Windows 10 for errors using Windows Update and have it repaired:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
If you have carried out the repair with Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, you can run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth again for safety's sake.
Finally, one can run sfc /scannow

I apologize for reply so belatedly, my alerts are a mess. All the same thanks for taking the time @walt.farrell and @Umiama. I can't really explain it either, it was one of a many issues I was having after the 1.9 update. For now at least it seems Designer and I have settle on a truce and everything is working efficiently and (mostly) correctly now.

Umiama reacted to a215198 in Affinity Photo hangs loading or saving document after 1.9 *solved*
After updating to 1.9 in both release and beta versions I found on my Surface pro laptop that it would hang when trying to open any afphoto file saved after 1.9 versions.
Using process monitor I found it repeatadely trying to read the PruningMode settings from a video adapter HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0002\PruningMode
This turned out to be the Citrix virtual video adapter added with Citrix Workspace.  Upon removing Citrix Workspace the issue resolved instantly and Affinity Photo opened/saved files as usual.

Umiama reacted to Frozen Death Knight in Can we please get alpha lock and edit lock for layers?
Both of these features are something I have come to miss after using Affinity for a while. While you can use Protect Alpha on some brushes, it is not quite the same as alpha locking layers, since doing that actually works on more than just brushes. I used the Smudge and Blur tools combined with alpha lock to avoid bleeding over my finished silhouettes, which I think would be very useful in Affintiy as well.
Edit lock just speaks for itself, but I'm doing it anyway. When you feel that you're done with a layer you should be allowed to permanently lock it to avoid accidental edits like brush strokes. I think this is pretty straight forward.

Umiama reacted to Yuli in New hotkeys and better workflow for digital art, please
I'm still trying to set Affinity to my go-to app for digital art, but some essential things are pulling me back, making me go back to Krita or Paintstorm Studio:

    - A single hotkey to toggle show/hide layer (it's dumb to have 2 different keys for doing this)
    - A single hotkey to toggle lock/unlock layer (same as before, a single key instead of 2!)
    - A single hotkey to toggle group/ungroup (again, if some element is alone, press to group. If it's grouped, then press again to ungroup)
    - Define custom hotkeys for brushes (so we can change the selected brush on the fly, this is a must. An example for this is changing between different brush sizes)
    - Hotkey for toggle brush lock alpha option
    - I don't want to make another post for this, but, it's SO annoying that the brush selection highlight is gone after changing the size or switching tools... Idk if this is a bug, but this need to be addressed as soon as possible I think. I believe it's a bug or a missing feature, but please solve this.
    - Brushes panel doesn't even have labels for the brushes (besides the tooltip when mouse hover, but this is unconfortable).

That's all for now. These changes will make Affinity A LOT better for digital artists, it will definitely improve the workflow. Thanks and forgive if any mistakes, english isn't my first language.
