Here it works very well. Make sure that you select a good brush for the job, try with a basic brush.

-- Window 11 - 32 gb - Intel I7 - 8700 - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060

How odd. Thanks. It was working just fine a few days ago. Might try a reinstall.

Before you go to the trouble of reinstalling, check that the brush has its blend mode set to ‘Normal’.

Alfred - thanks - that has sorted it - the problem was the blend mode on the context toolbar that had been set to lighten.  I had been looking at the blend mode in the layer panel.  Thanks for your help.

An easy mistake to make. That setting determines how the selected layer interacts with other layers, but in your case you needed to specify the behaviour of the tool you were using on the selected layer.
