SirPL got a reaction from Wosven in Custom order of Text Styles
    Hi guys.
If any of the below statement is wrong please correct me.
    --------------
I work a lot with InDesign and there's one thing in Publisher that vexes me: so little controll over Text Styles list. I mean the lack of ability to create directories and to sort elements as I wish to.
I am used to having styles in a order I use them in a document (first headers, than paragraph variants)

To do that in Publisher I would need to prefix them with a number. But it makes later reordering quite hard.
I tried that once and I ended with style called "8.25 Chapter number". That's very stup... ekhm... inconvinient.
    --------------
When it comes to directories: I'm aware of concept of Group Styles which was indended (?) to substitute directories. But the behavior is different.
I work a lot with bi-lingual publications and in InDesign I very often make two directories with the very same styles (the only difference is language used for hyphenation). i.e. when I work with English I collapse French directory.

In Publisher I can't have two styles with the same name:

    --------------
I would really appreciate the ability to organize styles in directories and to sort styles and directories according to my needs.

There is an abbreviations.propcol file in appdata (search for it) which is updated when you add a new abbreviation

SirPL got a reaction from mykee in Words with soft hyphen are shown as misspelled
@mykee – I think it's not a bug but misconception of what hyphen is for. Let me explain on that:
In polish books there's a similar concept of indicating dialogs and narration, but we do it with dashes: en – or em —. Hyphen however is used only for... hyphenation.
So why Publisher changes hyphens to soft ones? Because it expects them to be placed only at the end of a line and inside a word. Thanks to the change if you resize a text frame, you don't get a hyphen in the middle of the running text.
What you can do about it?
Use find and replace (soft hyphen => en dash) Import better typesetted documents

    Hi,
call it a cosmetic issue, but to me it is an inconsistency: When you set up a new document, the input field for the top margin is found at the top right edge while it is positioned at the left bottom edge when setting up a new master page (see pics). Or is it just me who doesn't understand the reason behind ...

I'll add my vote for footnote and endnote support.
    > Hope you can implement it in a similar way like in InDesign, . . .
Please, Affinity, whatever you do, don't look at InDesign's notes. Footnotes are at the document level in InDesign, they should be at the level of the story. That way each story can have its own numbering style and start number. It should also be possible (as it isn't in InDesign), to set the first footnote in a text as an uncued note. And users should be able to define their own sequence and appearance of note symbols (asterisk, pilcrow, dagger, double dagger, paragraph symbol, etc.).
    > Visit any university library and you'll find that endnotes replaced footnotes long ago, perhaps in the 1950s.
Complete nonsense. Academic publishers prefer footnotes.
    > In the era before computers, endnotes were far easier to typeset.
That's why notes were set as endnotes at some stage. Endnotes hung on for non-academic texts and in texts published by penny-pinching publishers, but nowadays footnotes are preferred by many. Footnotes are still more labour-intensive than endnotes, but the difference in effort is not nearly as big as it used to be.
    > In today's world, their appearance at the bottom of a page is seen as clutter by most readers.
In my experience, readers just get annoyed by having to go to the end of the book (or worse, to the end of the chapter in multi-authored volumes).

While this might be true up to a certain point for academic publications in the English-speaking world (and while there is a certain international convergence in recent years), there are also cultural differences. German academic publications are still heavily using footnotes for reference purposes as well as for comments and clarifications. And while footnotes might be perceived as clutter from a typographic point of view (it can be incredibly difficult to typeset certain sorts of academic texts in a visually pleasing way), they are much more practical for readers. Personally, I don’t like reading a book from two ends.

Add me to those voting for footnotes and endnotes, but with a strong stress on the later. Visit any university library and you'll find that endnotes replaced footnotes long ago, perhaps in the 1950s. In the era before computers, endnotes were far easier to typeset. In todays world, their appearance at the bottom of a page is seen as clutter by most readers. And being able to have both in the same document would be handy. Footnotes could be used at the bottom of a page to clarify ideas. Endnotes far away could be used to give references that most people don't read.
I would, however, agree with those who'd like to see footnotes handled in a more powerful way. Untangling Tolkien, my day-by-day chronology of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings was done in Framemaker, which allowed me create the equivalent of footnotes for references to the source in LOTR in a sidebar alongside the text to which it applies. That worked far better than bottom of the page footnotes or endnotes. I can't do that in ID.

By default the number keys set opacity - which is fine. BUT AD doesn't distinguish between the standard numbers and the numeric keypad, to which I'd really like to assign a bunch of other shortcuts.

With 15 keys on the numpad, and at least 3 different modifiers, there are >45 keyboard shortcuts going to waste here!

Also, under the current system, if I do set a numeric keypad numeral as a shortcut, it doesn't warn me that there is an existing clash with the opacity function... worst of both worlds!

Adobe is possibly looking for actual matches in the smcp table and if/when not found, are then likely use what is there and then fake it for what is missing. If so, that too may be a dangerous choice. I know I have several fonts from way back when OT became a thing. They only have drawn small caps using only the normal Latin and no extended Latin. Which might end of being a mismatch of character weight when say Polish is used and there are no drawn small cap characters to cover the extended Latin.
Might have to play with that in ID to see what happens if I get time.

First of all - thank you @αℓƒяє∂ for your tip - that's actually it!
I opened the font in FontForge to learn which of the OpenType features are available. It turns out it has small caps table with the following entries (sorry for polish UI):

The only small case variant available in this font is a comma accent! (i.e. used in Romanian Ș).
So I decided to completely remove smcp table and guess what:

I only wonder why it works in InDesign. Maybe they exclude accents/combining accents while checking if they should fallback small caps...?
Serif - maybe that's a good improvement to implement in the future?
