Would this be due to the value you have entered into the Kerning box not actually being applied by hitting the Tab or Enter key after adjusting the value?

DGee reacted to vendara in Affinity Publisher's swatches make it difficult to work with professionally
i had a pretty intensive course in indesign for the last few months. but since i wasn't a big fan of adobe even before the course, i wanted to transfer the knowledge i gained to affinity publisher. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that many important functions are not available, or are extremely cumbersome to use.
    1. spot colors
If you want to make a spot color, you MUST create a new global color. There is no option to convert an existing color to a spot color.
    2. overprinting
In InDesign you can select an object and mark it as "overprint". In Publisher, you have to set up a swatch and mark the color itself as overprint.
    3. delete a global color
When you delete a global color, you should be able to replace it with an existing global color.
    4. add global colors automatically
When adding a vector graphic, the colors it contains should be added directly to the document palette.
    5. create palette from document
since point 4 does not apply, this function is useful. however, even colors from images are added, so you have to disable it first, otherwise this function is useless again.
    6. quality of life
A big help would be that when you double click a color in the swatches, the "Global Colors" window (which opens when you create a new global color) opens. This small change would fix point 1.

I would love to work 100% with affinity. But these points make my decision difficult.

    Hi @DGee,
Looks like a regression over V1, this also works as expected in Windows. I have replicated this and it has now been logged with the developers, many thanks.

DGee got a reaction from debraspicher in Kerning Type - hiding edges and boxes
Thanks, yes I'm already using those shortcuts. They are useful only to do a rough kerning in a few seconds but after that you need to be precise and there are no available shortcuts to go below 10% increments which is when things get trickier, yes you can use the slider in the character panel afterwards but it's not the same.
You can hide all text overlays in Illustrator and Photoshop. In vectorstyler the box hides automatically, and the cursor line is less obtrusive, in Pixelmator you can hide the text overlays except for the cursor which it's also less obtrusive.
It should be extremely easy to implement that function and the benefits are very real. I mean in my experience, as much as I love designer, kerning and working with type in affinity designer is a pain for the constant distraction of the overlays. Kerning is already very hard but when you have those extra distractions it becomes a pain. The cursor line should hide automatically when performing changes, that would be optimal.

I had a vague feeling (and may well be wrong) that it used to adjust (absurdly) tracking at some point, but it really does adjust kerning (spacing between pair of glyphs, not something that can be applied to characters / text selections themselves, like tracking). Anyway, this is how it now works at least in all desktop versions (1.10.6, 2.0.4 and v2 beta) and all three apps, including the Spacing menu commands.
But I made a mistake: on macOS, the default shortcut for hundreds of em is not Opt+Shift but Opt+Cmd. It is just that I have changed this to Opt+Shift because this is how it is on Windows, and I want to have identical shortcuts on both systems.

Oh, silly me they're in the adjustment window. I just have to display the adjustment panel via the view menu first.

If nothing lse, it would be nice to be able to preview what these fonts looked like before having to install them to do that, but I do not see any way to do that like we can for other fonts.

I hope that at some point they will add a way to access these fonts through Font Book on Macs. The reason I want this is to be able to create a Font Book Collection to group them all together, which would allow me to choose that collection in the Character panel.
As it is, there is no way I can see to filter the font list in Affinity to show just those fonts, or to add any of them to my existing Font Book collections like the one I created for handwriting style fonts which I could add Candlelight to.

At least in the German version of all three apps (2.0.4 on Monterey 12.6.3) “Datei / Inhalt importieren...” does not bring the fonts into the available fonts list. Dragging the *.affont files into the main app window works fine, though.

"Import Content" doesn't seem to work on the English version here (On Mac OS Monterey or Ventura at least).   Dragging and dropping still does though.

Ok I figured it out, it's dragging the fonts onto the main window of the app

DGee got a reaction from 58volts in Inconsistent results merging layers
I noticed something weird when merging layers that contain live filters.
I had two layers. Top layer was set to negate blending mode and the lower layer had a blur live filter.
If I select both layers and merge them the appearance of the composition changes drastically.
I had to rasterize each layer separately and then merge them. I guess that is not how they are intended to work IDK...

2.0.3 for Photo and Publisher for macOS are now available (I bought direct from Affinity: the Apple App Store may be a bit behind.)

Edit - just noticed that the version of Publisher appears from the Software Update dialog to be "2 1688". Yet the splash screen for the installed version reads "2.0.3".
There's never a dull moment with Affinity...

Yes, I corrected my post when I saw the update. Apparently none of us are being notified? I had to check downloads page to grab the programs:

That's the reason you didn't had problems so far, but inexperienced users do probably not know about such things and can therefore as default have the systems USB power saving options enabled, which might sooner or later then yield to Affinity file saving problems & possible non recoverable data lost.

Whatever external connection (USB-drive, NAS, Cloud, etc.), if that connection is temporary in sleep mode/not mounted/or has access dropouts, then you will have a problem during file saving operations. And since the Affinity apps file format is an incremental nature one, it doesn't always behave brave here.

    @DGee @v_kyr
All my Affinity data files (all three apps, both versions) are saved to an external USB drive.  That drive is never allowed to go to sleep whilst the computer is on and I've never yet experienced any problem with file saving or files being corrupted.

I wished there was a golden ratio element here which I could lay over my layouts to quickly arrange it for the better – would be a huge help for me.
Best with a curve (colour should be choosable) and the rectangles. Should be an object like triangle,... too.
    Same in Apub

Sample image: Text and image are greyed out a bit – it is all about the rectangles and the curve.
