I had been following the instructions found in Help under Kerning. None of them worked. However, today, after rebooting the computer, they do. Must have ben a little big lurking somewhere...
To adjust kerning: With an insertion point made by clicking between two characters in your text, do one of the following: From the Character panel, choose a value from the  Kerning setting, using the up and down arrows, the pop-up menu, or by typing in a new value. Auto will automatically kern characters by default. Positive values give expanded kerning, negative values give condensed kerning. From the Text menu's Spacing sub-menu, select one of the spacing options. Typically the advantages of kerning are most noticeable in larger text, so the most detailed attention is applied to kerning when creating display text such as headlines or text logos.
Keyboard shortcuts
The following keyboard shortcuts also allow you to adjust tracking or kerning: To loosen spacing in 10% increments, press . To tighten spacing in 10% decrements, press . To loosen spacing in 50% increments, press . To tighten spacing in 50% decrements, press .  
 
 

@Geoff777 I am not at my computer right now but I believe that in addition to your correct advice, including “choosing or typing in a figure,” you hold down the ALT key and then can use the left or right arrow keys on your keyboard to move characters farther or closer apart.  🤔. Hope I am not leading anybody astray!!

Well, I have been a professional publisher, editor, and writer for 31 years (including as CEO of my own publishing company) and have worked extensively with Pagemaker and InDesign, the latter of which my staff and I all hated from the start.   I am now retired, but welcomed the very first Publisher Beta with great anticipation in 2018.   I have never looked back.  When retail v. 1.7.3 was announced, I bought it within the first hour and was extremely pleased from the very first day.  All software requires workarounds for people who want to do a particular something their own way, rather than the way the developers have designed it.  I am currently revising several books agonizingly done with InDesign, now happily importable into Publisher as IDML files.  Other than adjusting some tracking settings, it is going flawlessly, including some very intricate uses of fonts.   Perhaps Publisher doesn’t make @basholtzer happy, but that does not mean that it is not perfectly capable of making other professionals happy.   And I am sure that there are many who are just that, even now as Publisher nears its first birthday.
 

I have this same problem with AFD whether called from a shortcut or the App folder. It takes 3 or 4 minutes of delay.

Hi @Geoff777 & @Gadabout66 Could you confirm for me that the Affinity apps you have installed are located in your Applications folder and are being opened from that or shortcut on the dock?

Hi Geoff777. I have been experiencing the same issue - it's just happened yet again, which has prompted me to join the forum. Great products, but I don't understand why this is happening - and it's happening frequently. I've just had the message and I don't even have Designer, Photo or Publisher open (I own all three). In answer to Wonderings, I have Catalina 10.15.4 running on an early 2015 MacBook Pro. I don't get this with any other app. Thanks.

I cannot agree more with you about Affinity products. I mainly use Designer which I find very powerful. Even on this eleven year old laptop with Windows 7, 512 GB SSD, all 3 applications are fast enough. There are features lacking however, Affinity is slowly catching up and has many other functionality which compensate for which is lacking.
I used DrawPlus (up to the latest version) before Affinity. When Designer became available, I didn't look back and just started to draw. In the beginning, I missed the many templates and standard artwork available for DrawPlus but not long thereafter, I was up and running again.
The best feature on Designer recently added is the "Template" creation. This is simply invaluable and very nice to have. Also the re-organized document setup dialog, is a very good idea.
All by all, I can highly recommend Affinity Designer to everyone doing serious illustration work.

I hope that everyone is doing alright during this difficult time. I wanted to offer some “in the trenches” reporting now that I am working from home. I must use adobe products since that is what my work uses. the adobe cloud software is buggy, laggy and generally fraught with fails, and bugs.
By contrast, whenever I use Affinity software, Its like having a brand-new computer by contrast. And Im not even talking about the superior workflow of Affinity. Im just talking about meat-and-potatoes tasks. One day, Ill upgrade my machine, but only because it will eventually fail as all hardware does. But for now, when I use Affinity Design, Photo and Publisher, my hardware performs so well that I wouldnt hesitate to do any of the things that a designer / illustrator wants or needs to do. I now use adobe, literally, only because I am paid to do so.
I gladly use Affinity software, which provides a far richer, more effective experience than Ive ever had with adobe. Thank you for developing it and please continue!!

Quite true, but that was done using an entirely different code base than the Affinity one, nobody ever updated it to run natively on Intel Macs, or tried to integrate it seamlessly with 2 other apps across three platforms, so it is something of an apples to oranges comparison.
After all, it is not as if Serif could just bolt on old code & be done with it.

Hey Goeff777, thank you for your answer. i already now these settings. There it is possible to upload and save templates. My question referred to whether there is already a template that contains most of the Photoshop shortcuts. Then I only need to upload them.

There may be some user created custom shortcut files that include some of the PS ones, but since there are quite a few functional differences between how PS & AP implement various things, it is probably too much to hope for that any of them would include most of the PS ones. If nothing else, there is no equivalent in PS of Affinity's Personas, & as you may know it is possible to assign different shortcuts to different Personas instead of 'global' ones that apply in all Personas.
Also keep in mind that shortcut files for Windows won't work with the Mac versions & visa versa (the extensions are different), so if you do find a user created template you would like to use, make sure it is for the same OS you use.

You would need to tell Publisher that your text is in Danish. In the Character Panel (or in the Character section of a Text Style definition) you can set the spelling language and the hyphenation language.

I'd pay for an Affinity DAM too! I think a lot of people would. Wish Apple would have sold them the rights to Aperture - would have solved a lot of issues!
I don't use iCloud for photos either - bought a Synology server and have set up my own "personal" cloud which the rest of the family can use too. It works well and there's no monthly fee.

On my Mac I’ve installed GraphicConverter, actual version 11, to replace Lightroom. Can be tested to any extend for free, just has a start-Up-Lag in the free use. Then it is a one-time purchase, if I remember somewhere in the 30€ range.
Works different than LR, has a lot of tools to import, organize and develop pictures. Many things can be applied in batch processes to a series of pics. You do one, and then let the SW apply the same modification to all you select. Writes a XMB-file for every modified picture, so you can non-destructively roll back what you do. And you are not bound to a catalog that will sort of lock you into the program. Everything is on the disk, legible in Finder.
