I downloaded affinity and took a cursory look but it looked complicated so I closed it then life got busy for me for the past couple of weeks so had no chance to take a second look.
Then while I am still in a busy spell for the next week or so we had a total lunar eclipse last night and I took some telescopic images that I tried to open in irfanview but they looked like mono images. Some research informed me that I might need something called de-bayering so I thought maybe the affinity software I downloaded might be capable of that function so I was going to try it until after clicking it I got a message that the trial had ended.
Wow I thought that's quick or short, whatever.

Perhaps someone can save me some trouble if they could answer my question about the de-bayering, can affinity handle that kind of astro-photo data and open the image of the Moon at totality with it's red color intact? The downloaded file type is png, but the de-bayering is independant of the file type, I think.

Hi @Astrobabb, welcome to the forums.

I'm afraid I don't know much about astrophotography myself, but the help file in APhoto does mention debayering, if that helps at all. (I thought debayering was used with raw files, but I could well be wrong about that.)

Unfortunately, once the 10 day trial has expired you can't start another one with the same app. However, when you purchase an app from the Affinity Store you do get a 14 day period when you can return it for a refund, if you wish. Also, there is currently a 50% sale running (I don't know for how long!) so now is a good time to buy and try it out.

I know nothing about astrophotography but I did find references to "FITS Bayer Pattern" in the File Formats section of the About astrophotography stacking help page. Is that what you mean, or is there more about it somewhere else in the AP help?

The only other mention I found led to this page:

I have looked at a couple of articles about bayer filters and debayering, but I honestly can't say that I'm much wiser!

In addition to Pšenda's link above, there is also this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayer_filter

(Rushing sound, as this topic goes straight over my head!)😄

Possibly this may somehow help: https://discuss.pixls.us/t/demosaicing-experiements/2223

G'MIC is a free plugin with 570 additional filters, also available as 8bf-plugin for Affinity Photo and Photoshop. Very cool. I'm not an expert in this topic, but I hope it may help somehow.

An additional hint: Be aware that a moiré can also result from the resolution of the certain image related to the resolution of your screen. As I clicked your image in this thread, I noticed that the moiré seemed to be almost gone, as far as I could see. So take care that you watch your image in 100% zoom factor, to judge the moiré.

Sorry, my english is not very good, and one of my eyes got a new lense on monday. So I can't give any warranty that I'm really helpful.

Edit: The Filter "Minimum Chroma Demosaicing" can be found in the category "Test" > "Iain Fergusson" in G'MIC or just by entering "Minimum Chroma Demosaicing" into the Search-field of G'MIC.
