  1. This is a very old thread and pre-dates the version below: Updated version is located here :Texture Brush Packs [Hatching Version 2] Making available a new set of texture brushes [hatching 02] that I have been working on for a new artwork Texture Brush Pack 04.zip
  2. JR Workflow Bundle: Shortcuts, Macros, HDR Tools & Brushes Hey all, I'm very happy to be posting this collection of tools that I hope will benefit your workflows in Affinity Photo! This toolset contains custom shortcuts, macros and brushes that are designed to enhance and speed up a variety of different workflows, from typical image editing to more complex masking scenarios, archviz scene creation, HDR image mastering/tone mapping and more. The bundle includes each resource in a separate folder and can be downloaded here: https://affin.co/workflow Here is a quick overview of what this pack features: JR Shortcuts Introduces a number of custom keyboard shortcuts designed to speed up image editing workflows, including: Layer manipulation: showing, hiding, rasterising, mask creation, fill layer creation, flipping and flopping, rotating. Layer stack manipulation: moving layers inside/outside of other layers, insertion inside for next added layer (great for clipping adjustment layers/live filter layers). Matting, filling with primary/secondary colours. Flattening the document, placing embedded documents/images. Quickly creating specific adjustment layers and live filter layers including Live Perspective on Ctrl+T. Pixel selections: selecting partially transparent, sampled colours, saving to spare channels. Rotating the canvas in 15 degree increments, resetting the rotation. Toggling various functionality panels e.g. Macro/Library panels, 32-bit Preview panel, Scope panel, Assets panel. Setting fill to 50% grey, resetting fill to black & white. JR Macros Provides a set of macros to speed up common operations that power users might use. These macros make extensive use of the Procedural Texture and Custom Blur filters as well as channel and masking manipulation to simplify what would otherwise be time-consuming actions. The available macros include: Compositing enhancements: shadow/reflection creation, quick tonal matching, easy layer merging and grouping. Automatic mask creation from layer content with adjustable black and white thresholds to tailor the strength of the mask. Useful for Z depth passes (3D renders) and depth maps (dual camera smartphone images). Fast alpha matte creation from white, green, blue and red backgrounds. Great for cutting out stock imagery non-destructively. Mask creation macros: create mask layers from tonal ranges, alpha ranges and colour ranges. Smoothing: Subtle Gaussian smoothing, both cumulative and luminosity-based, to reduce over- sharpening on stock imagery and out-of-camera JPEGs. Various filter masks: create edge detail masks from laplacian, laplacian of gaussian, directional, sobel and prewitt filters, as well as luminosity and LAB lightness selections. Selective sharpening, local contrast, high pass and clarity filters: quickly set up inverted live filters which you can paint onto to reveal their effect. Retouching Setup: set up frequency separation with multiple high pass layers and additional non- destructive retouching options (vibrance, tonal crunch etc). Channels to layers: convert channels to greyscale layers, mask layers and colour data layers. Channel isolation: quickly isolate red, green and blue channel data onto separate pixel layers. Curves with blend modes: quickly add an entire group full of Curves adjustments that use every blend mode available, allowing you to easily experiment with each option. Rasterise and Inpaint Alpha: quickly trims the canvas bounds, creates and grows a selection based on antialiased transparent areas, then inpaints. Great for when you want to quickly fill in alpha areas created by rotating an image (e.g. when you correct the horizon level). Red/Blue Channel Swap: performs a channel swap with additional user options for infrared imagery. 360 seam-aware retouching: HDR to SDR tone mapping, Clarity and Local Contrast. Tonal Painting layer setups: like dodging & burning but non- destructive with more flexibility. Architecture tools including line drawing retouching, 1-bit greyscale setup. Retouching tools including multiple high pass frequency separation and revealing dust spots/imperfections so you can remove them. Astrophotography retouching: detail extraction for deep sky imagery and general enhancement for wide field imagery. Filter Effects (part of JR Macros) Provides a set of macros for creative and functional filter effects. These include: Tonal compression for recovering contrasty images or expanding dynamic range. Technicolor (2-strip, 3-strip) and Infrared emulation
Infrared channel swapping for actual infrared imagery with various controls to help produce punchy and vibrant results.
Textured Mist/Cloud effects: combine with masking to add cloud texture to a sky, or give the impression of fog or haze on a landscape.
Live Solarise: create a non-destructive solarise effect, control its angle and intensity, then use blending options to change the tones in your image.
Halftone Effects including diagonal lines and continuous dots.
Light Leaks with controllable positioning on canvas.
Dissolve noise and diffuse effects to emulate a Dissolve blend mode. Shadow boost filter for softer, more natural shadow detail enhancement. Warm and Cool Tone filters as an alternative to the White Balance adjustment. Workflow Brushes Provides two new brush categories, Masking and Shadows, designed for quick access to suitable brushes for composite and architectural visualisation work. Masking brushes: Soft round brushes at preset sizes (64px, 256px, 1024px) with tight spacing and full flow. Ideal for consistent brush strokes which are required when painting on and off mask layers. Soft and hard edge variants provided. Textural brushes with dynamics to randomise X/Y spacing and rotation. Great for more realistic blending with cut out layers. Shadow brushes: Oval shaped brushes at preset sizes (64px, 128px). Saves having to create custom brushes with modified shape and rotation. Square shadow brushes for diagram and plan work. HDR Authoring (part of JR Macros) Macros to help author HDR (High Dynamic Range) content and tone map it to SDR (Standard Dynamic Range). The tone mapping to SDR and nonlinear to linear transform macros can be used with SDR displays—the other macros however are intended for use with HDR or EDR displays where the extended brightness values can be displayed. The macros include: Tone Map to SDR: performs tone mapping to SDR, providing user options like separate shadow/highlight mapping, brightness/contrast control and local contrast enhancement. Clamp Max HDR Brightness: restricts the headroom (dynamic range) of the HDR document and clamps it to a specified brightness value. Clamp Max HDR Brightness RGB Mix: as above, but with individual control over how the RGB colour channels are clamped. Filter Only HDR Values: filters through only values above SDR, which is useful for visualising the HDR values in a document. HDR Colour Map: visualises the HDR colour contribution and colour crossover with the ability to modify the threshold for the RGB channels separately. Nonlinear to Linear Transform Correction: Affinity Photo will typically use a non-linear view transform even when in a 32-bit linear colour space—this is so the user can see how the image or document will look when exported to a non-linear format like JPEG/TIFF/PNG etc. However, 3D artists will usually want to have a ‘linear’ look to their render so it looks consistent with what they were working on in their 3D software. Simply run this macro to add a Procedural Texture live filter that performs a gamma transform to achieve this. You can then export your renders to TIFF/JPEG etc and have them look correct. Linear to Nonlinear Transform Correction: included as a reversal to the Nonlinear to Linear transform above, applies a non-destructive non-linear gamma transform. ---- I hope you find the above useful, and in case you missed it, here's the download link again! https://affin.co/workflow Any feedback and/or suggestions are always appreciated.
  3. Hi! I'm trying miserably to create a textured rainbow brush. I want the colors ROYGBIV to be stacked like a rainbow and not like stripes. Whe I do accomplish the rainbow effect, the brush always comes out chunky and straight. I've tried "new.....brush" and adding a garden to a brush strokes and placing a bitmap gradient on a bus stroke. Does anyone know how I could get a brush like stroke with a horizontal rainbow pattern?

  5. I love everything about the vector persona and making a lot of vector illustrations as you can see them on my dribbble account. However, there is just one missing feature for which I'm switching to pixel persona; applying grains, spray textures. Since these pixel brushes are not scalable, I might have to reapply these brushes again on larger formats. I wonder if affinity guys can include a set of vector brushes to apply a nice, subtle textures which cab be scalable. This is one of the features that can set affinity ahead of procreate as well. What do you guys think?
  6. I've been trying to use transparent PNGs to add lightweight texture to my artwork. I've tried several different tutorials, and multiple different PNGs. When I overlay them on to my artwork and change the transparency to 'erase' it just turns the PNG texture white. I've tried using the color swatches and pickers to change the color to match the back ground paper, etc. and am still not able to get the desired affect. This is one of the tutorials I tried and best represents what I want to achieve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUi9KytBRLs I got the PNG files from Retro Supply Co, I've emailed them to see if I missed some portion of the instruction on how to use the textures. I haven't received a response.

  10. Hi I'm trying to equalize texture replicating the steps from this video for Photoshop in Affinity Photo. The result I got from Affinity Photo is abit blur and the color abit washed out, in comparison to Photoshop. Did I missed out something? Or it should be different step for Affinity Photo? The steps I did for Affinity Photo: 1. Duplicate the image to 2 more copies like from this video. (Total 3 layers at this point) 2. Then use Filters -> Blur -> Average on 2nd layer. 3. Then adjust blend mode to Linear Light for 1st layer. 4. Then use Filters -> Sharpen -> High Pass... (with Radius 100px, same when I did in Photoshop) on 1st layer. Result from Affinity Photo: Result from Photoshop: Original:
  11. Hi folks, off the back of this tweet - https://twitter.com/maisum_thiago/status/1159216372683087874?s=19 regarding Aseprite and copying a small portion of a design and having it repeat within an object (or lined confines) I was wondering if it would be possible to have a similar effect within Designer? Would be a great way to mass fill objects with a polkadot or any repeating texture/fill, kind of like a quasi-brush. Thanks, Rori
  12. Hello, I´ve been trying to create a noise brush in Affinity Photo for a long time. I don´t know how to do it though. I wanted to get a brush like the one they use in Pokemon for their lineart. (photo) I have no clue how to add that noisy texture and I would be really glad if somebody would help me out. :)

  14. Adobe came with a relatively new "Texture" Effect in Lightroom. Is there an equivalent in Affinity Photo and if not, could you add this slider? https://petapixel.com/2019/05/14/adobe-adds-texture-control-slider-to-lightroom-and-camera-raw/
  15. It is my understanding that the Texture Line Style is controlled by the Brushes studio in Designer but, since there is no Brushes studio in Publisher, what does it do? I can’t seem to find any way of altering what it does and it acts the same as the Solid Line Style. The ‘preview’ in the Context Toolbar changes but the line stays the same. Am I misunderstanding what is supposed to happen?
  16. For some reason, we need icon/texture with transparent background, and this transparent background needs to be white instead of black or something else. You can check this article, this is the reason we need this: http://www.adriancourreges.com/blog/2017/05/09/beware-of-transparent-pixels/ Now, my workflow in Affinity Designer is, an icon, and a white transparent rectangle at back, center the icon with the rectangle, then export it to png using file->export. The way I test it, is using XnView MP to open the png, then right click the image viewer, check "use alpha channel". Then the alpha channel will be removed and show the original color. Problem is, after I export it, the background is black transparent, not white transparent. See screenshots. Screenshot 1 is a home button icon and a transparent rect. Screenshot 2 is the color setting of the transparent rect. Screenshot 3 is the view in XnView, with alpha channel removed. Then I tested with only a little bit of alpha, by moving the alpha slider a little to right, export it to png, and the alpha is correct white alpha, not black. But it's not the ideal result because it shows a little bit white instead of complete transparent. How to do white transparent background with Affinity?
  17. Here’s another site which I found in my bookmarks that lets you quickly create images that can be used for backgrounds (and probably other things too): http://bg.siteorigin.com/ There are loads of different patterns and various options to play with. I’ve attached two examples: Leather; and White Plaster.
  18. I rediscovered this website while I was cleaning out some old browser bookmarks for web design stuff and thought I’d share it in case anyone else found it useful: https://trianglify.io/ With it you can quickly generate some simple triangle-based graphics - see attached example - which can be exported as either PNG or SVG and then used in your Affinity projects. The output isn’t perfect – e.g. the vertices in the SVGs are not exactly aligned and the PNGs sometimes have ‘gaps’ – but they might be of some use, maybe as a starting point for something else.

    30 Halftone Assets

Hey friends! I just created this lil pack of 30 halftone assets. Check it out! 30 Halftone Assets
  20. In the Affinity Photo Stroke Panel, it says ' Style—Select a line style button to change how the line is drawn. Choose from None, Solid Line Style, Dash Line Style, and Texture Line Style, respectively. The last option applies the currently selected brush in the Brushes panel to the stroke. ' I'm having trouble getting the Pen tool to use the Texture option in using the current brush. Any tips? Thanks.
  21. I created a halftone texture brush in designer but it's not working as expected. If go over the same spot with the brush; the transparent pixels get darker until it is a black square. I want it to stay circular halftone. Left: what I get when I go over an area once. Right: What I get when I go over an area multiple times. No matter how many times I go over an area I want it to stay like the one on the left. I have to start over everytime I go over an area more than once. Texture brushes should not accumulate layers. My texture brush image is included in the attachments and these are my brush settings.
  22. I need the support of the nVidia Photoshop plugin for exporting .dds textures. Thank you.

  24. I did this following a Photoshop tutorial using Affinity Photo. I used the brushes that were offered in the tutorial but created my own denim texture in another program and then imported that into photo where I added a few adjustments.
  25. Hello! Is my first post here. :) I'm trying to replicate this tutorial I found to create a foil texture. I found a way to replace the clouds filter using the Perlin Noise on Affinity Photo. But I have no idea to replicate the last step on this tutorial. Anyone has any idea to do this? Thanks!
