  1. I've revived a few photos from my archive, using some texture images I've collected -- mostly from legitimate free sources with no copyright issues. These three are of an old trumpet I bought a few years ago. It's no longer playable (and I couldn't play it if it were) but I thought it was photogenic. These three pics have two texture layers, added one at a time, and I tried various combinations of blend mode and transparency till I found one I liked. I think the first one and the third one have something of a nineteen-fifties feel (I was there ) ... This one reminds me of an album cover, but I can't think which one. Do let me know if you do! Here's the first one in afphoto format if you want to see exactly what I did ... 0920z.afphoto

  4. Filter Forge

    Filter Forge 7.0 is released

Dear Affinity Photo users! I'm glad to announce that Filter Forge 7.0 is released. It supports Affinity Photo 1.5, and will support AP 1.6 as soon as Serif officially releases the update. All the new features with descriptions are here https://www.filterforge.com/features/ but I'll list them here as well. For all the users: 1. We've made Filter Forge faster by improving sample caching. 2. Copy and paste images between Filter Forge and any graphic editor. So it means you can use Filter Forge with AP 1.6 even before the update is released. 3. Generate and preview all active channels during rendering and export all of them to files at once. For filter authors: 1. Instant component search will help you to find and add any component faster and easier. 2. We refreshed 47 existing components, made their list and slider inputs mappable. Now there's even less boundaries for your creativity. Try all these new features https://www.filterforge.com/download/ and let us know what you think.
  5. Hello everyone I have a query for you I'm experimenting on a project in which i would need to add text on a blindfold and make it look as if it's painted on/on the blindfold . I found that "negation" blend mode gives the best results in terms of visible texture of the blindfold , however because of the blend mode and the light unnatural black spots appear . How would you guys suggest getting rid of the black spots (The issue is at the R letter where there is quite a lot of distortion of colors)
  6. I encountered a problem with abr brush texture loading in both Photo and Designer. I've checked about this issue in the forums and only found two similar threads in the Ipad section of bug reporting and both are from November 2017. I just got both Photo and Designer this year, since among many other reasons (such as better vector workflow for Designer), one of them was their ability to import abr brushes. I love collecting brush and I regularly used many affinity brushes, like @paolo.limoncelli's brushes as well as frankentoon's brushes. They are all great brushes and I have fun using them. It's just that sometimes I just want to use various different brushes to experiment with them. What I found out when searching about this issue was that some abr files is made using newer versions of Photoshop, and they might require adjusting in order to be read properly in Photo and Designer. I think it had been 2 updates since the this issue was brought up in the two threads I mentioned and this issue still persists. I tried importing the same brushes in Artstudio Pro on the Ios and it the app seemed to import them properly. Right, now into the details of this bug. Whenever I import abr brushes in Photo or Designer, the texture image of the brush will load incorrectly. What happens is that, instead of a single picture of a seamless texture, the image shown will be smaller tiles of the texture. I'll attach some pictures below. I think some brushes even have only three small tiled image at the top with black or white fill and sometimes other tiled texture below it. It only happens to newer abr files from Photoshop cc as those from Photoshop cs suite works fine. I realise it may take a while to implement fix for newer abr files, but I feel the need to bump this issue to let it be known. I would like to thank you the developers for such wonderful apps and I hope that this issue can be resolved soon. Regards Carina Images: The first picture showed brush that has some proper texture loading this second was the one with the tiled texture image The last picture was three tiled texture image at the top with different textures at the bottom, some brushes it can have a black or white fill at the bottom instead.
  7. Excuse the duplicate topic, I've only found one thread with no recent activity. I'm having a problem loading .abr files into Affinity on my ipad pro. I've tried multiple brushes from different authors and I get (usually) the same results. The textures, more often than not, load and display at about the top third of the texture window, the rest is black. This results in the brush only being useable in the top portion of the canvas...anything below it paints a solid with no texture. I've snooped around and tried to find a fix to no success. Has anybody ran into this problem? I feel like it might be a problem translating from a pattern based texture in photoshop (but still wrapped in an ABR file) to Affinity needing a full texture image. Any thoughts would be awesome. Using an iPad Pro 10.5" with the latest ios 11 update as of Nov 27, 2017 Thanks, Kyle
  8. Dear modellers and illustrators, Allow me to introduce SibStock -- small but growing free high resolution texture site. Below I'll publish new textures updates as they arrive on the site.
  9. Hey guys, I was hoping you could help me out. I'm trying to create some textures to use in Affinity Designer and save them as assets. Should I create them as vector or PNG and can you explain why? I tend to think that vector is better, but it's way too heavy. Thanks

  11. I was wondering if it's possible (or could be possible in an update) to have vector textures applied to vector brushes? What I mean by that is let's say I create an image of dots (all vector) then output it into a vector format could that then be used as the source texture for a vector brush? Would be great as then you would have all vector throughout a file instead of some bitmap and some vector which obviously then limits how large it can be printed at. I totally appreciate the bitmap brushes and what can be done with them but for some things (for example a halftone pattern) it would be great if they could be vector based so that they could then be output at any size when exporting. Many thanks for any input on this and apologies if it's already possible and I'm missing it somewhere as I seem to be doing that a lot lately. Very probably old age starting to set in!
  12. How Can I convert a texture to a nomal map (bump map) I affinity photo or affinity designer?
  13. As a digital artist and Mattepainter the painting component in any software is extremely important. Now with many levels of sensitivity available on the computer and iPad its become something we all lean very heavily on. AP’s dynamics for the pen has an issues I think needs immediate attention. When painting in broad or fine strokes AP struggles with the sensitivity when the pen hits the screen. Random stamps of the texture occasionally are splattered on the page even on the lightest touch of the pen. This becomes extremely annoying by having to undo the last stroke. Painting has become a less free and easy thing to do while im constantly watching out for this. I’ve tried playing with the setting but unfortunately it makes no difference. Ive attached a video where this is demonstrated by light taps on the screen. This is about as hard as I usually paint when moving through a piece I’m working on. So to paint a stroke with the flick of the brush after this contact it randomly creates this frustrating splatter. As you’ll see in the video I show this effect in AP and then move to Procreate, where it doesn’t happen at all. I want to remain painting in AP and keep it as my preferred choice of software. Both apps are great for painting but this is sad AP is not up to Procreate’s pen sensitivity level. Im curious to know if anyone else has experienced this and find it to be a problem?
  14. This is in Affinity Photo 1.6.4.104 on Windows 8.1. The file I uploaded shows the grid that showed up when I used the live lighting filter, added some texture (within the live lighting panel), and then went to the Effects palette and added a Gradient Overlay and changed its blend mode. To duplicate it, just open any image, add a live lighting filter with texture (- or +). Then go to the Effects palette, Gradient Overlay, set the opacity to 50% or so, and start changing blend mode. Once you see the grid, you can go back to the live lighting filter, set the texture to 0, and the grid will disappear. In this example the grid lines are kind of faint; that's because it's a low-quality jpg. When working in AP, the lines are distinct and sharp.
  15. Hi all This is a new small sample set of brushes I have been working on for several months with base textures, seamless patterns with mixed vector/bitmap nozzles. It is a larger single set containing 30 raster brushes I have changed the numeric s slightly on the brush reference sheet (it's just a number!) Sample sheet is attached enjoy! 17. I've been trying to duplicate the above tutorial for 3 hours; now I hate myself. I have to run, can't explain what isn't working for me. Quickly, it's the part of the tutorial that explains how to protect the edge and a bit inside of the edge from the texture via an inner glow on a higher layer. Please help in exchange for a lifetime namaste.

  19. Hi all, I have this self portrait as sadly-not-up-to-snuff Michelangelo's David and I want to overlay a marble finish on it. I think I could make this happen in Photoshop but I can't work out how to do it in Affinity and I ain't going back to Adobe. As you will see, I have added a layer with marble but I can't make it cover just my body whilst also leaving all the detail in the body. Does that make sense? If anyone has any help to offer I would be very grateful and I hope no one is horribly offended by my image! I have a STAR!! If this is beyond the pale let me know and I'll delete that image since hopefully it might make sense without it. Phil

texture noise missing in AD on Mac

Hi, After the latest update of AD I can't find the noise slider to add texture in colour fills. Is that feature removed or moved somewhere? It was cool to add some texture to flat tones or gradients easily by sliding the noise slider. Any insight is appreciated. regards, Raman
  22. Hello, everyone. I dove in and bought all the programs. Now, I have a 'best practices' inquiry: How do I set-up the artboard so that the white dirt on the 'K' (a texture file) is actually erased (a layer mask? a clipping ask?), allowing the pink circle to be visible? Sorry - I am completely befuddled by this.
  23. Any suggestions on how to successfully and smoothly create more texture to the edges of my illustrations? When I chose a vector brush texture I like and use it for outlines, I experience two issues... 1. With affinty’s default texture brushes there’s a large “gap” at the closure 2. With brushes I’ve purchased, there’s not a “gap.” However, when I add any bitmap shading within my shapes, the lines stand out way too much because they aren’t being shaded (even when I expand the stroke). What am I doing wrong? heres an example of a texture in trying to achieve from @gitkadraws. Not sure if you can see the textures in this photo or not...

  25. Hi, I am trying to clip a brick texture to a logo in affinity designer. I looked up how to do it in affinity as its different than photoshop. I place the photo of brick on top of logo layer and here's what happens-pictures of before and after below. The texture goes away completely and thumbnail is white so I'm not sure what to do. Thank you! -Emily
