  1. Hello everyone! Today I gave another try to Affinity Photo. There has been some updates.. Shortcuts still does not work properly.. ok. let's wait. A basic function we use everyday in PS is the level layer. We use the clipping (in PS, pressing alt on Mac) to precisely set the value for each channel. It does not seem to work on Affinity.. Also you can not change channel using cmd-2, cmd-3.. like on PS. Any chance it will be implemented ? Regarda

  4. Hi Affinity Forum! I’m a newbie to Affinity Photo and am trying to learn some of the nuances. Could someone please help me with a few questions on the smudge tool? 1) Can it be set to affect multiple layers at once? I’ve tried using it with two layers selected. But it’s super laggy and doesn’t really seem to achieve a blend from the two layers. 2) When smudging a single uniform color into the transparent areas of its layer, the smudge brush sometimes changes the color somewhat as it smears, adding darker shades of the color as it goes, and even throwing in some grey. Is there a setting to keep colors truer to their original hue as they get smudged? 3) This one is kinda weird. I like to set “F” as my shortcut key for the smudge brush. I don’t believe “F” is set as any other competing shortcut. Yet, for some reason, it just doesn’t want to choose the smudge tool when I hit “F.” Picking other keys for the smudge shortcut seems to work fine, but not “F.” Any ideas why this might be? Maybe I should separate these as different forum questions. Just trying to learn this tool and running into some challenges. Thanks!
  5. When I showed up at work on April 6, 2020 I was informed that I had been laid off because of fears over the Corona virus pandemic. Well, that just gave me back about 11 hours of daylight to use until work cranks back up (or I decide to go ahead and opt for early retirement). So I went home, ready to file for unemployment. When I got home, got a call. A local business saw this as a good time to invest in a new website, and I was his choice. It would require lots of coding, pulling out some of the few strands of hair I have left, and photography. So I grabbed my Nikon and struck out to capture the images I would need. However, my old Nikon just didn't have the quality I needed for my web design shots. It showed when I got home and started editing the images. I had already been looking at purchasing a used DSLR camera, but I hate to buy something someone else has already abused. So, figured I would kill two birds with one stone. I still kept the budget small (around $300.00 US) but made the jump, making the purchase with the income the customer paid down for me to start production. Then I realized that, since I would be using the new camera for photos for web design, I would need (clears throat) to "practice" with the new camera in order to get proficient when operating it. This would also give me an opportunity to hone my editing skills because we all know that no matter how good an image is you will need to do some kind of tweeking before you can use it. So, I guess it was a good investment. I know my images are working better. With less time spent trying to bring out detail from poorly recorded images, I'm able to spend a bit more time trying to be artistic with my editing. Be safe, be well . . . make pictures.
  6. Hello, I'm not sure if I'm in the right section, so if not, please direct me to the correct section. Two very important files that will not open. When I open in Affinity Photo, the message I get is "This File type not supported." I created this file in the 1.7 program.   8. Hello. Playing around with the menu for texture generation (where you can put in mathematical functions etc) I was wondering if there was a way to create "Ridged Multifractal Noise". This type of noise is often used to generate heightmaps, bumpmaps, or textures for digital cartography, but unfortunately I'm completely oblivious to the whole math-side of such things. I know in PS the usual technique would be to Render Clouds, and overlay several layers of Difference Clouds, but even that would not create proper ridged multifractals. Anyway, I guess what I'm really looking for is a tutorial that goes in-depth of what different settings can do for noise. Maybe someone can help.

  10. I have often used my flatbed scanner to directly create images of flat objects such as leaves, so I thought I would have a try with a slide scanner. When I retired, I was able to keep some of my computer hardware including a microscope slide holder for my Nikon LS50 slide scanner. I have been searching rather desultorily for a suitable subject to scan., The problem is that I have to first place the microscope slide in the holder, then add the subject, then a cover slip. I cannot push a loaded slide into the holder. I recently came across this subject. It was an old flower head from some composite plant with many pappuses (parachutes). I was able to detatch a few of these and immerse them in liquid and add to my slide with a coverslip. I used the top layer from a bottle of Dentyl mouthwash as a liquid medium as it wetted the pappus nicely. Post-processing comprised a bit of sharpening and a Levels adjustment. After much trial and error I managed this. It is hardly a fine photograph, more a proof of concept. I will keep hunting for a suitable subject. January is not the ideal time, but I hope to find a small skeletonized leaf. John
  11. Hi Affinity Forum. Question about Affinity Photo, please. Is there any way to pull up the color wheel on demand wherever the cursor happens to be at the time, even if the wheel already appears in the panels off to the side? Perhaps it could be a shortcut key combo. Or better yet, maybe it could be simply clicking the button on a Wacom stylus. I know this button does the trick in Photoshop, and it’s extremely helpful in digital painting. So far, I haven’t found this feature in Affinity Photo. If it exists, could someone please let me know where it is? Thanks!
  12. Hi guys, prior to this problem I could 'Place' an image and add effects from the 'Filters' toolbar but now it's not showing at all. I have just updated to the 1.8 version and this problem started on the older version ( cant say which ) Im a complete novice and would just like to add simple 'blur' to my images like i have been doing for the past year Thanks Steve
  13. I was trying to learn adding some light rays to the image. The original, layers panel and final image are given below. The basics are from two video tutorials, links are here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FEw2BrsTek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wh3ZVDt8Kk The light rays layer I made differently, not as per details given in tutorial. I created a new pixel layer and used a brush from "sprays and splatter" drop down menu. White colour was selected for the brush. Made 10 to 15 clicks without dragging the mouse. This layer was then used for the zoom blur as per procedure given in the videos. Since every picture is different, some modifications have to be made in procedure when trying to adapt from videos. One major point is the fill slider that is not present in AP. Colour Dodge blend mode works better with this fill layer slider. I managed with the sliders in the Re-colour adjustment layer though it will not produce similar results as in PS. BR, Unni Original image, Layers panel, Image after editing and Light rays layer given below.
  14. Would love it if the color wheel stopped rotating every time I changed the hue , if it could just be an option where the triangle would just be locked in place that would be fantastic! Really hope to have this on the iPad and the desktop version :)

Hi there, A very long-time user of Photoshop and just about every other image editing App you've heard of and probably a few you haven't I thought I'd show my work in here with Affinity Photo now that I've completely moved across from using Photoshop. I'm loving every single second of Affinity Photo and I believe that it's waaaaay easier to do most nearly everything in Affinity than it is in Photoshop even though I've been using Photoshop literally since the very first version of it. Anyway I'm going to post images that I've created using Affinity Photo and will update this thread when I create new pieces as long as that is okay with everyone in here and the forum moderators / Serif? I am still learning my way through AP and have started re-working some of my old images which are now much improved vs my old editing techniques in PS Here is my 1st main attempt using AP This is IC5070 Pelican nebula in Cygnus tone mapped using Sii as Red, Ha as green and Oiii as Blue. 9x5min each colour channel. Stacked and aligned in Astroart, Initial stretching and development in Startools then colour re-combination, balancing, additional tone mapping and sharpening in AP. BTW - AP did these final stages in a fraction of the time PS takes. Clear Skies
  18. I have developed a Photo document to be used as a Color Matrix Tool. The source document file along with instructions and sample output images are available at the link below. Each of the three individual components of the color is referred to as a “color channel”. The output of the document is an image consisting of 12 sections (see first sample image below). Eleven of the sections each contains an 11x11 matrix of cells for displaying colors. Each matrix cell is 50 pixels square. Think of each section as being a layer from a color cube with 11x11x11 cells. The user can easily create a display of 1331 cells of unique colors. It is also possible to create a RGB16 step gradient of an RGB color or a gray scale distributed across 11, 121, or 1331 steps. The 12th section is available for the user to enter text notes to accompany the display. The user specifies the colors to be varied in 10% steps horizontally and vertically within a section. The opacity of each of the colors is varied from 0 to 100% in 10% steps using layer masks. A third (background) color is user specified to be applied to all cells equally within a matrix section and is likewise varied in 10% steps between sections. The final color displayed in a cell is the sum of the red, green, and blue color channels of each of the 3 Fill layers (horizontal, vertical, and background). It is also possible to add a constant color value to any of the step gradient colors. For example, it is possible to vary a red color horizontally to go from 50 to 250 (RGB8) by assigning the constant value as 50 and the step gradient component as 200 (0-200). The possible displays lend themselves nicely to visualize and/or quantitate the effects of various Adjustment layers and of Opacity, Blend Modes, and Blend Ranges applied to: a. adjustment layers, b. superimposed pixel layers, c. superimposed fill layers, or d. output of the Color Matrix Tool. Images can be exported as PNG (retains opacity and accurate pixel values) or JPG files for sharing or using in the future without having to recreate them. I recommend that you at least do a quick of the Instructions file located in the above link at, ColorMatrixTool -- by Darel Hess\_B_Instructions_Hints____ColorMatrixTool.jpg Hope you enjoy playing with the tool. Sample image with single color channel in each of 3 fill layers. Matrix section with inner grid lines hidden. User text in section 12. Portion of a 121 step gray scale spanned across 11 sections. Note the ability to hide/show the vertical and the horizontal grid lines independently. Color of axis labels can also be set by the user. Visibility of the left, right, top, and bottom axis labels can be independently hidden or displayed.
  19. Finally, it is published 🙂 (for a non-profit association ; difficult time too for non-profit associations all over the world but that's nothing of course compared to the suffering of many). All photographs and graphics in this book have been edited and designed mainly in APhoto and AD. I had to import them in Photoshop for a final exportation with the right colour profile that the Affinity suite can't (still) handle properly. You may recognize some screenshots of photographs I had posted here. It's still too bad I couldn't use APublisher. I patiently waited for the availability of this desktop publishing app, I tested it and even finished the layout of this book but was “defeated” by its general instability, its poor colour management, its inability to handle a specific colour profile,... maybe for a next one ?   20. Hi all, I'm experimenting huge difficulties in white balancing images. So I've tried to create a very simple "test image" to understand if I'm doing something wrong. This is the test image, an 8 bit Pixel layer Then I've created another layer with a reddish tint and blended multiplying it (so i've created a tint shift in the image). Finally I've tried to color balance both with the color balance adjustment layer and with the White balance function of develop persona, both using the single click or using a rectangular selection. The result is the the white balance is always very poor. Hoping that this could help in solving the problem. bye Edoardo
  21. Hello, In AP, is it possible to script an “action” like new layer creation or loading a 3d lut to a new layer? Photoshop allows this and can be used as a way to integrate with other applications. If this allowed, is there any documentation on this? Regards, Frank

Hello guys, So happy with my Affinity photo experience for drawing my comics, except while working - and since it's new to me - I mistakenly start to draw on the wrong layer*, and when I try to cut that part and paste it into the correct layer I do the following: in the current layer I select the part I wish to transfer ctrl + x I choose the layer I'm wishing to have this part on instead ctrl + v and what I get is a new layer with this part and the same name as the layer I cut the part from, and then I have to merge and it's really quite frustrating is there any parameter I can adjust to solve that? am I doing anything wrong? *side note: I don't know how I suddenly move from one layer to another without realizing! I'm in my desired layer and all of the sudden I'm on another layer with already half of what I've done in there! I must be doing something stupid somehow 😅 any ideas
  24. However, I do love the shape of their blooms as they unwind but before they fully open. The first image was taken in overcast conditions, while the second one was taken in the morning with the sun behind the blooms. Wish I had remembered to return the ISO to 200 or maybe 100 before the second shot. Sure would have looked better and possibly had better contrast and color. The second image is also a "focus merge" of two images. Does anyone know if Affinity Photo considers the order of the images included in the merge? I tried it twice with those images, but when I picked the near bloom first and the far bloom second, the image looked different than when I chose the far bloom first (top of the stack) and the near bloom last (bottom of stack), which is where this image came from.
  25. Thought I'd post these the first of which is my first go at digi-painting exclusively in Affinity Photo which took little getting used to as I normally use clip studio paint, but it turned out alright in the end, - the posters are for my brothers band just to keep interest alive and all that
