  1. am thonking of buying Desinger for windows. however i have a few queries 1) Will the software get routinely updated with upgrades at no extra cost ? 2) may i use the software on my personal system too. 2. Hey guys how you doing today? It's a bright shinny day today but yesterday was a cold dark one. Rainy at moments in the morning so I took an hour with my son to draw and do arts. I'm a logo/jersey designer and he asked me a Cheetah themed jersey if he passes his grade. So I came up with a logo and now looking to design the jersey with the colors he gave to me. Here's the logo so far. I'll let you see the jersey design when its done and the jersey when its printed and sewed. Should be a month long process since we're doing a lot of overtime these days - no time for personal project - but should be fun! We are working with Adobe's products but at home I'm running both Adobe's and Affinity's and I prefer by far Affinity (unless the tools are existent yet). So this will be done within Affinity from the sketch to the final jersey. (Designer have been used for the Logo - Photo for the presentation). Thanks!
  3. Hi, I'm a web designer and am seriously considering using Affinity Designer at work. However, one thing that I found quite annoying using AD is that the lack of 'Paste in Place' feature between artboards. I use Sketch and Illustrator at work and both programs let you paste objects to another artboard preserving object coordinates. You'll be surprised how often 'paste in place' is used while designing. Please add that feature to the next version of AD. Thanks!
  4. Hi, Is there a way to edit filler text? like adding a headline, pressing enter between lines or even bolding one word? right now it seems like just a block of text that I can't even select one word... am I missing something?
  5. Hello everyone this is my playlist on youtube for some greate speedarts on affinity designer end photo (updated daily) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRXqbiWpUbhSEGfnzh-dxQAqIiNz5jbpT i hope you like it :)
  6. Could you add the ability to stack effects? For example I would like to add to a one shape two outer shadows but with different colours and options like opacity so that they "intertwine" one through another.
  7. started off as one butterfly, then it became this. Large Wire. All my posted artwork was created using AD and a MBP's trackpad.
  8. Hi guys! I've had Affinity Designer for a while and I love it. Unfortunately my Mac Book bit the dust recently and transitioned to a Windows Laptop. Is there any way to get AD for my new laptop without having to repurchase the app?
  9. Hey all, here's the latest piece I've just finished in 1.6 b1. It's a fun and colourful graphic Heart illo I'm selling on Redbubble (shameless plug). ;-) Yes I know it's pink but purple heart sounds better. It's basically all line work with some filled in shapes but it's really the first time I've done a piece like this in Designer using the path or stroke pressure feature pretty much exclusively. It takes a little getting used to but it ended up feeling really nice and comfortable and kinda slick as compared to illustrator's method. Gotta say though, the expand stroke nodes situation is still a major issue for me as I usually expand and unite everything to make a watertight piece. It almost forced me to abandon Designer for this and jump back to illustrator. But I stuck with it and I'm happy with the final product. Here's a link to my Redbubble page showing it on various products. The bold colour and linework really pops. https://www.redbubble.com/people/kevincreative/works/26652427-purple-heart-i-know-its-pink-but-there-it-is
  10. I am starting to see a few posts asking Serif why Publisher hasn't been released yet. After just completing my first BASIC layout project with Designer and Photo it makes sense to me for at least some of the reasons why Publisher hasn't been released. The two currently available apps are still missing some very basic layout tools so Serif needs to get the basics put in those two apps before moving on to the more complex layout software. I wrote a lengthy piece about this in another thread but it was buried one hundred posts down. I just wanted people to be aware of these points so I am starting a new thread so that they can get more exposure. Original post: After doing my first layout project on Affinity I can understand why Serif isn't rushing Publisher out (even though I enjoyed using it for layouts.) There are still a number of basic layout features that need to be added to Designer and Photo to even work well as a basic one page layout software. Why rush out complex layout software before you even have the basics working right? This is the list I have come up with that Affinity should complete before moving to a layout program. - Visible bleeds in the program, not just after exporting the file. There was too much work trying to set up bleeds at a half an inch when I could see an object after it was dragged out into the bleed area. I basically had to draw a half inch box and then drag the object to the size of the box and then delete the box after I no longer needed it. - Adding and editing artboards needs to be done in Photo. If Photo let me edit artboards I could have done my entire book cover layout in Photo (I think) and not had to jump back to Designer each time I needed to make a slight revision. For an example the publisher I was working with said that my book spine needed to be .58" rather then what I previously had it set to which was .5". Such a small adjustment should not require me to go to another app. - I consider text wrap to be a basic tool so this needs to be done without having to rely on a workaround. There is also a feature from InDesign where the text follows along the side an object that I find to be very useful but I can't remember what it is called off the top of my head. - I should be able to select a shape that I want to import an object into. I know there is masking from the layers panel but with InDesign I have gotten used to selecting a shape, selecting place and then having an object get imported in. This object could then show up in the layers panel as a masked item. -The first version of Publisher should include some of the features that InDesign users have been clamoring for over the past several years and never get. The goal is not to just make a clone of InDesign but provide functionality it can't do or can't do well. I think Affinity got off to a good start as a basic layout tool but I really believe that all of these basics need to be done before Publisher comes out. Ideally Publisher should be a solid app right from the first version since so much polishing would have been done to layout tools in Designer and Photo already. This way the focus for Publisher can be placed entirely on things like long document features and ebooks rather then adding layout tools that have been available for decades now (those features should already be in Photo and Designer by release.) Another advantage of placing the focus on Designer and Photo is that people will get comfortable using those programs as solid basic editing apps so when Publisher comes out the transition to the more powerful long document tools will feel more natural since it will be so similar to the programs they already use. PS. I noticed as I was typing this that there is a shortcut for adjusting leading. That is a useful idea. Is anyone else getting this to work? It doesn't work for me. That seems like a much better idea then having to type numbers into a leading box.
  11. Hello everyone! I would like to show you a project I'm working on in my free time. Every letter gets random word and logo. I will post other logos from this project in this topic. On my instagram you can find black-and-white versions of these logos. I hope you will enjoy following this project with me! 12. About closing a panel... I notice in the panel menu in the top right of a panel or block of panels, the menu choices do not include Close. I know you can close a panel by View > Studio > uncheck the panel. And Help says: Each Persona's workspace can be customized to fit your individual way of working. To hide/show a panel:From the View menu, click the panel name on the Studio flyout. To show again, click the panel name again. etc, etc BUT I also notice the Layers panel has a nice big X in the top right that quickly closes that panel. Thought maybe it is because I have the Layers panel standing separate from other panels. No, the Assets panel is separate and doesn't have a handy "X" - so, a quick "X" close is only available for Layers?? Or am I missing something about the other panels?
  13. After messing with photography, editing and a little bit of design work I finally got AD and I absolutely love it. I do a lot of marketing and design stuff for my band but there's a certain limit to what I can do before I have to source it out. I'm slowly finding my bearings and am looking forward to learning more and developing in the realm of an amateur graphic designer. Here's a couple of simple ones I recently did just to get a hand of a few techniques. Comments and criticism welcome!
  14. Quick illustration I did for Instagram self-promo. Playing with the isometric grid. Good times.
  15. Hey all, here's my latest all vector Designer character. A fun, cheeky and a little "nutty" cartoon squirrel character created for Nutty Squirrel Games, a client in San Francisco. Also, I decided it was time for a refresh on my Forum avatar. Love working on these types of illos in Designer!!
  16. I decided to create visual journal to keep things organized. Due to work, i won't be able to post regularly. But i will try to keep things organized here. You can check out my Dribbble account to see my work. I haven't started posting work on Dribbble using AD yet as i got the software for 2 days only. But i would soon. You can also checkout out my DeviantArt account where i upload the source file of the design if you are interested in downloading the files and examining.
  17. Another Scooterissimo poster artwork. This is the 0 series vespa from 1953 which featured in the film with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. Roman Holiday. This is designed as an A2 poster and I wanted that grainy look, so I added 100% noise. There's also a scan of some old book endpapers multiplyed in there.
  18. I made this beetwen my normal duty in job, no sketches just clicking by mouse in AD, I try to prepare this stuff to use later in Moho. Anybody have a experience with pairing these two software? experience
  19. Hello everyone! First post in the forums, so here's a little introduction/explanation first: I've been looking for a good alternative to Illustrator (which I use in my daily job) for my freelance work and came across Affinity Designer. I lurked through the forums a bit, saw the introductory video about a hundred times and eventually when Illustrator abolished my last nerve and obliterated any pieces of patience I had left, I knew - Affinity Designer will be the software I use! I thought it would be a cool idea to try and record my first project with the program and share it with the community. It's nothing special, mostly shapes and gradients, but I had to start somewhere, so here goes: A video of the process: https://youtu.be/QlpYsvdkpEY The photo of the t-shirt guy is from unsplash.com. Thanks for having a look!
  20. Hello everyone, this is my first post with my work. I am really happy to be a part of Affinity users community. From few days I am a lucky owner of a new PC and Trial version of AD. Because I like it very much I bought AD yesterday. I would like to share with you my first test illustration. Still I am working on my process - right now I am using Krita and AD. Krita for sketches and digital painting stuff, AD for a vector works. Still don't know a lot about Affinity Photo - maybe that will be my next buy in near future. If you like my work please follow me on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mejnaprzemyslaw/ THX for any feedback :)
  21. Hi, I've just joined Affinity and haven't purchased yet, no doubt I will but don't know which one to get. Ok so I do some photography ( normally use LIghtroom for edits) I have the Adobe Suite but can't seem to get it on with Photoshop, I'm going to be curating a hell of alot of images soon, so photo editing/manipulation needs to be a lot easier. I'm also a fabric designer, and want to do digital designs for print and screen and some other brand designing stuff. I haven't a clue which one to get as I can see I need both elements. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  22. Hi here a short strip done with AD. First of all it's very pleasant to work with it, the interface is clear and easy to understand. I work with wacom material (here a cintiq) and the pressure with the brush or with the pencil is fine. I can really use it, there is a light smoothing after drawing but the stroke is like I want. This is good and works better than in Illustrator where I only get pressure with brushes and where I get strange effects particularly on corners. In Illustrator I'm used to work with theyr pencil allowing to keep the last stroke selected and to redraw it again. With AD it's not possible so I draw a sketch on a layer and then my inking on another layer with undo/redo to get a good stroke, sometimes using the pen to adjust. I noticed that the brush has more options than the pencil and used here the pencil which is more simple. An advantage using the pencil is that after drawing the stroke stay selected (you can see the bezier curve) and you can change color and stroke. With the brush you can't change the color or stroke, you first have to get the move tool or you can press "cmd" and "alt" and then change color or stroke. In fact this the first time I can draw with a vector software and get an inking like in a bitmap software. Where handwriting was difficult in Illustrator it's here much more easyer with AD ! I attached three captures, one with AD and two with AI : This is interesting because AD will often be compared with AI requesting what AI has, but here AD do something very well that AI doesn't have ! After that my colors are simple, nothing special, using the pen was perfect, its precise and offer all the possibilities we can wait for a vector pen. One thing I found fastidious is the use of the eyedropper tool ( go right to get it, and left to use, and right to click…). Exporting the file offer many options, this is good, my file was 7,8 Mo as a pdf, it's heavy for such a file with no gradient or particular effect… SVG, PNG, PSD and JPG where ok. After this very good first impression I will seriously wait for Affinity Publisher…
  23. Is it possible to set the application to always scale the stroke until i manually change this setting agian? Now I need to set the option for every asset, very annoying. :P
