Hi, A source for repeated questions or feature requests is color separation. This tutorial explain the steps to separate a CMYK color format document into the individual C M Y K channels, and get a preview of total ink (areas exceeding a given threshold) Color channel separation for export Open the file, and copy the color channel mixer adjustments into your file on top level. activate only 1 of the 4 layers at a time export as greyscale document (repeat 4 times) Attached you find the CMYK separation V2 file showing how to get all views within one file with help of artboards and symbols to copy the master artboard content into the CMYK and total ink separated artboards for preview purpose. Total Ink Preview assumes a total ink between 200 and 400% is used as limit. remove or deactivate color separation layers add a levels adjustment. Set output white level to 25% on „master“ channel add channel mixer adjustment set all CMY channels to 0 on all contributing channels set K to 100% on all 4 contributing channels CMYK add a curves adjustment set the curve as shown. The positions shows the transition area from white (below total ink) over grey (warn area) to black (exceeds total in limit). I think that the repeated questions are typically related to separation preview, while images (and possibly also native elements) are still in RGB color mode. If that kind of tool can also show problems in placed CMYK content (already when it is placed on the canvas and not just in the exported PDF), then all the better. That is, users would like to have a kind of an interactive in-app preflight tool that exists e.g. in InDesign (note that this tool also takes into account effective TAC assisted by things like overprinting and blend modes): properinkcontrol.mp4 In lack of something like that, post-export tools like Adobe Acrobat Pro and callas pdfToolbox, and PackzView (the only one that is free, but with limited availability), are pretty much the only tools that can handle TAC and other preflight related tasks effortlessly and professionally. Everything else that I have seen (including postprocessing of separated inks e.g. with Ghostscript) are rather convoluted workarounds, but of course better than not having anything at all (= dismissals from the printer).

SInce I switched to Publisher for all my CMYK work, I thought it might be time to do the same with a project using two spot colors. But I can't find a useful way to work with it. When using overprint properties Indesign makes it possible to do that per object (line or fill). I think it would be ok, to do it upside down, like the user guide of Publisher is promoting. That would mean to make a copy of a color swatch (one overprintig, one knocking out) and to use these on all objects as one wishes. And it does even work when outputing a PDF. But there is one thing missing - a preview of how my layout actually looks when overprinting, simple WYSIWYG (I'm not even speaking about a separation preview). So that is not very useful. With CMYK colors it's quite easy - you can just use layer modes (multiply) - see, what you are doing and even get it exported in a controlled way, when using the right PDF export settings. But with spot colors I didn't get any of these exported, they always change to CMYK. I've tried all possible ways (my document is CMYK, FOGRA39 and exporting as X4, X3 or other variants didn't help; of course honour spot colors is on). Any ideas? Has anybody a real workflow for that? bbrother -- pretty much nailed it. Off the top of my head I'd also add a printable slug area, proper separation preview and a shortcut to view thumbnails of all open documents similar to how it used to work in V1 (see screen grab vid) if you have 20 documents open, it's a total pain in the arse to find what you want by either control tabbing or clicking through all your document tabs. Also the ability to print CMYK vector work direct to a rip that expects CMYK, without Affinity first rasterising at 300dpi and converting to RGB, leaving the rip to convert back to CMYK and ballsing up all your colours Screen Grab 2024-04-12 at 2.16.20 pm.mov

Hi, AP already has some great tools for making seamless textures (Affine Destort, Frequency Separation, Inpainting, etc..) There's a great official tutorial video on it. The end result is something like this: Although this is a properly seamless texture, it has some low frequency features that means the tiling/repeating will show up. One thing that would really help would be to having a tiling display mode so that we could preview the tiling effect, like this: (note: I boosted the contrast here so its easier too see) As an added bonus, it would be super cool if we could paint in this mode and have the painting automatically tile/repeat. On a related note, being able to rotate the canvas view would also be very handy, but I think this has already been requested. Thanks, Passive

Please add channels panel to Designer, off by default to calm the nay sayers, but available in studio manager for those who need it. It is an essential tool to check the result of any color manipulation, e.g. from adjustment layers, or layer blending, or to easily preview CMYK color separation. Without channels Panel you either need to Switch to Photo (which lacks some of Designer's capabilities, making this approach both tedious and often impossible). Rely on workarounds like adding channels mixer adjustments (create the ad-hoc, or manage them as assets - adjustment presets are missing in Designer, too. Don't forget to delete them before saving.

Hello Affinity community! I developed a AppleScript-droplet-collection and a Safari/Publisher-Preview, where you can extract and preview CMYK-separations, how like Adobe Acrobat Pro (it works with the Ghostscript framework). I wrote the Safari-Preview with HTML, CSS and JavaScript (only Safari can open TIFF-files). Furthermore i make a Affinity Publisher 1 & 2 preview. But this is on the first time only experimental (only for A4-papersize, portrait-format and with 3 mm cut frame). When you like, you can change the document for your needs. Overprint simulation and color separation are kind of possible, even with spot colors. I also find Affinity programs to be very complicated to achieve a good and secure production workflow, but it's possible. It took me a while to get it sorted, but now I'm really confident and use it for all sorts of print productions. I'm checking separations with Packzview (https://www.packz.com/downloads-info/), which is free to download, but needs registration and new upload once a year. Overprint simulation is always visible in layout (when using Multiply on layers). You should check if you really have spot colors in color palette, especially have a look at consistent color profiles and use Multiply on layers to overprint. That's about it. It took me a lot of testing to make sure it works. It's easily messed up with different color profiles on export. I'd love to see a separation preview in the program (as with channels in Photo, but showing correct separations for spot colors as well). When you work only in CMYK you already have separation preview, but you need Publisher and Photo to be installed as well – and use channel palette for separations. Good luck!

Comming from an other discussion I would suggest to implement a separation preview at least in Designer and/or Publisher. With this preview you should be able to check all separation plates, including overprinting and see if there are any spotcolours.

A function is missing in "Publisher, Photo and Design", that of being able to preview the color separation as in InDesign. A very important function before making HR PDF.

+1,000,000! As far as I can tell after a few weeks of use – compared to Acrobat X on my old El Capitan MacBook – the current version of Packzview appears to be reliable. Also, for PDF/X preflight check there's "PDF Studio". Its trial mode is not time limited, it only adds a watermark in case you would want to print anything. Its separation preview doesn't work correctly, however, and it doesn't even recognize spot color plates. Yeah, in the past few years I've participated in many threads on these forums to explore all these issues and finding functioning workflows and workarounds… Note, however, that APh's "Channel separation" won't display the automatic K100 overprint.

As affinity products are good for designers , they have a lot lack of tools for DTP verification of documents. Can we expect separation preview in Designer and Publisher and used ink limit preview ?? thats fundamentals tools. maybe some trapping tools for profesional look of apps

How is possible to see on the monitor the correct color separation (with correct overprint) in each single or combination of colour ink channel? In the current version I didn't find a way. Thank for any help

Now I like Publisher so much that I only work with it even though I have InDesign and QuarkXpress. The only big problem is separation preview. At the moment I am creating print PDF in Publisher, then exporting PDF to InDesign and switching on the separation preview. I really miss the feature! Otherwise it would be a great tool!

Hello. What is sorely lacking is a preview palette and color separation as in Indesign and QuarkXpress before making the PDF HR! When are you going to offer this? As long as there is no such function, it is not a professional tool!

OK, you Publisher ninjas out there. Here is a tough, weird one: THE BACKGROUND: We publish a large circulation (15k+) monthly magazine style newspaper on 32# newsprint on a cold-set web press. We set up the ads and special elements in Affinity Designer and export them to PDF/X-4 or X1-a. The color profiles for the document and the export are set up for newsprint. We also set up the Cover in Designer and export to PDF, have used both X4 and X1-a. For all of these, we set up the Ink Percentages just as we need them for the press. THE PROBLEM: When we export from Designer and check the Ink Percentages in Adobe Acrobat (Print Production/Output Preview), the ink density percentages are just as we set them. However, when we Place the PDFs exported from Designer into the publication in Publisher and then export the entire publication to PDF, either X-4 or X-1a, the colors SHIFT AND CHANGE. One major issue is black (the K in CMYK). There are times when the black needs to be 100% and the rest of the colors 0, and not a "rich black" (a mix of black with other colors to give it more richness). However, 100% black in PDF elements placed into Publisher ALWAYS seem to shift to a form of rich black, and other color densities can shift also. This even happens when we take the native Affinity Designer files and place them in Publisher and then export to PDF. When we export to PDF and check the colors with Acrobat Output Preview, the colors have shifted. We get rich black when we wanted 100% black only. When we sent these files to our printer, they cause no end of headaches with color separation and registration issues. Yes, we tried setting the Assign/Convert under the Color setting in document setup to "Assign," but it automatically switches back! Argh! Please don't just tell me to try various different color profiles and export settings. Have tried that approach and no color profile settings or export setting changes seem to make a difference. It seems to be a problem with the way the PDF export engine is implemented in Publisher. Am I wrong about this? Or maybe there something I'm missing. I have searched the forums and can't seem to find anything specific, although I seem to recall someone else having this type of issue too, but can't find it again. Here's how bad it is: Due to this and the inexplicable unchangeable default text box margin spinner settings in APub 2.0, we have gone back to InDesign. Color settings stay solid as a rock even after exporting to PDF with PDFs placed in the publication. However, I am still holding out hope for APub. OK, ninjas, anybody else run into this problem and have a fix for it. Fingers crossed.

Is there a Preview Panel in any of the Affinity apps that would allow one to check for correct color separation in documents where spot inks have been used?

I was wondering if there is a way to check the colour like Output Separation Preview from InDesign. It seems in Designer's Preflight, it just indicates many other issues but I never see anything for colour. I did a test with one of my client's project which is grayscale and one spot colour. I need to verify that all of attached images, vector file, fonts etc are 100% Black or a spot colour and not a CMYK (rich black).

I'm a graphic designer and prepress specialist. I've used Illustrator since version 1.1 on a Mac Plus (it came with a video tape with John Warnock himself showing you how to use it). I've used practically all the vector illustration tools that have come to market since. Thus, I have a pretty good idea about how such programs behave, and which were the ones for professional use and which were for dilettantes to make pretty pictures, but not for making a brand identity for a Fortune 500 company. I bought the whole Affinity Suite with the hopes that I could cut the cord on Adobe's pay-us-every-month-or-else scheme. What you have created so far is to be commended and I see a lot of bright potential. I really, really, really love StudioLink, for instance. Its amazing. But, man... there is so much. I am not making this topic to troll you. I am making it in the hopes that, from the perspective of someone who has done serious work for serious clients both on the creative end and the technical end, you guys can get some feedback to make both Designer and the whole suite something everybody wants to move to. My plan is to keep coming back to it and adding quirks, bugs, and major issues so that you can hone these apps. I hope to pay for upgrades with some of these things I say in them, and some things that are even better than what I suggest. Soooo... lets start with color. Because its bad. The problem is the paradigm. A person who is a web designer will have no issues with this, because it seems built to fit their needs. Make a quick graphic, mess around with the RGB sliders until its pretty, and your done. Professionals who work for big clients need their work to be repurposed to all media forms: web/screen, offset press, digital printing, signage, you name it. Thus, colors have to be carefully managed. What Designer uses is a color mixing panel, and a Swatches panel that has lots of different palettes in it for you to dig around and play with. What it needs is a color mixing panel, and a Swatches panel that automatically, and only, shows used colors from the document, whose view is set it "small icon list" by default. If you mix up a color and use it, it shows up automatically in the Swatches panel under a "Document" palette. You can have your "Application" palette, but anything you choose from it needs to show up in that "Document" palette. Knowing what you are using will be your first clue that you have mixed colorspaces and have too many instances of a particular "spot color." Graphic designers who have never worked on the technical side are horrendous with making graphics that will not separate correctly and come out with unexpected results when used in any medium other than on-screen display. One time I had some students come to my work and they brought their best artwork with them. I loaded them up on the Mac, and asked them to tell me what their intent was in making their work. I then ran it through the prepress workflow. None of them had their spot colors correct, and they actively mixed RGB, CMYK, and Spot versions of the same colors, and it showed how they would end up not matching if actually put onto product. (Consider this: Draw a large box, and then draw a a small circle in it. Make a CMYK blue, and assign it to the box. Then make an RGB blue color in the circle that visually matches the CMYK mix on screen. Send it to a commercial printer and have them make a professional proof of it. I can bet you will see the circle in the middle.) I then showed them how to fix these problems and prevent them. Most were gracious about it, but some were downright livid and thought I was trying to shame them. I was just trying to save their future careers. The morass of swatch pallets you have needs to be collected and renamed. You can still have them accessible, and I can see where people will use them. But you need to track those colors as people click on them in that Document swatch palette, and never let people confuse between the swatch palettes and the color choosers. Tinting should be more accessible and visible. Lets say you added PANTONE 286 C to your pallet, and you want to use the Fill tool to make a gradient with it. So, you have the 100% version already. To make a tint of it (and make sure that, unlike 98% of graphic designers out there with under 2 years experience, you end up turning most of your gradient to CMYK or RGB), make it so you can right-click and pop up the menu on the swatch and choose "Make Tint of this color..." Note that I did not say "Make Tint..." because this implies that it can be a tint of anything. (See where I am going with this? Professionals need control, and management, not just freedom.) You should then have the nice window you have for setting the tint, with an OK or Done button along with Cancel. Once that OK button is clicked, a new swatch should be added called "PANTONE 286 C 0%." AND IT SHOULD ALWAYS WORK. Right now you have to right click on a swatch, make a copy, and then right-click it, choose "Edit Fill..." and scroll all the way down to the bottom and choose "Tint." And god forbid if that color is a "Global" color, because as far as I can tell, you can't tint them. Frankly, this is sooooo CorelDraw. Nice cheap software for people to make pretty pictures at home for use on the church website and newsletter. Not for professionals who want to carefully create artwork that will color match anywhere. Back to that gradient. The tip of the gradients should be then filled with the 100% and 0% versions of the swatch, and if the designer gets silly and chooses the white swatch (what is the color definition of that swatch anyway? K 0%? C 0 M 0 Y 0 K 0? R 255 G 255 G 255?), a warning should pop up telling them that "Mixing spot and process color will result in the gradient being converted to process using the document colorspace!" That will hopefully ward off that bad practice. AND ONE MORE THING: colors used in between those two swatches in that gradient should not show up in the Document palette as used swatches. I had that happen to me once and had no clue why. Then you need to choose Separation Preview and look at your list of channels, turning them on and off to make sure you did it right. What Separation Preview you say? The one you didn't put into Designer and Publisher, but is in Illustrator and InDesign. That's what. Have it show overprinting by default without the ability to turn it off. Next you need to save gradients into that Document swatch palette automatically too and have a means to locate where they are used and be able to edit them and reuse them. But that's another issue, and I am done for now. Just keep this in mind: your competition isn't Microsoft Publisher and CorelDraw. Its Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Be different, but be better. People like me will pay you for it. See you when I have more time to give more feedback. You really have a good thing going; it just needs a lot of polish.

Hello Affinity community! I developed a AppleScript-droplet-collection and a Safari/Publisher-Preview too. I wrote the Safari-Preview with HTML, CSS and JavaScript (only Safari can open TIFF-files). Furthermore i make a Affinity Publisher 1 & 2 preview. But this is on the first time only experimental (only for A4-papersize, portrait-format and with 3 mm cut frame).
