  1. I will reserve my judgement in regards to this being a good thing or not. From my own experience software have developed for the worse after being acquired by much bigger companies that have vastly different business values. Examples such as Substance when bought by Adobe and Pixologic ZBrush being bought by Maxon. I don't know anything about Canva or their business culture, but I will give you over at Serif the benefit of the doubt about your decision to merge with them. Ever since I picked up Affinity back in 2017 I have come to appreciate how you have developed Affinity into something I rely on for work. You deserve that much at least. Good that you are making a promise to uphold the values that made people want to buy your software. Just to make things crystal clear however, if you break them I will simply start looking elsewhere for software that suit my needs and move on. I have learned to become a wanderer ever since Adobe began its subscription crusade over a decade ago. No hard feelings if it happens, since I have gotten used to that trust being broken. Also remember that Affinity only got to this point because of people not wanting to be forced to subscribe to Adobe, so if you are going to add subscriptions, having perpetual licenses will be key to retaining our trust. As for what I want to actually see being developed now when you have some serious capital to back up your development, then here's a list! Linux version, or at least make it fully compatible with Proton/Wine/whatever. Pretty sure you can afford it now! An animation timeline for Designer and Photo with proper GIF and vector support. I want to do animated vectors in an intuitive way that's at least on par with Illustrator+After Effects. 3D perspective tools and grids. Fix Windows specific drawing bugs. Vector brushes and erasers. More vector tools. I.e. free form gradients, blending one shape into another, node clean-up operators (merge, simplify, etc.), and more. Auto-trace for Designer. Been a decade since you said you wanted to add it in. More game development tools for textures. Been 4 years since that teaser. Cleaner lasso selections with both mouse and tablet. AI powered tools such as selection, upscaling, and some ways to integrate generative fill, whether in-house or external. Finishing the plug-in system and code API. Make an Affinity Infinity software with all Personas in one software. I really don't want to switch softwares when I can have everything in one place. More brush management features such as sub-folders, the ability to R click to select brushes, etc. Don't disappoint!
  2. This is true, and the 4% of Linux users make far more noise and evangelize far more than the vastly larger number of Windows users. A lot of Mac users also evangelize too, but they do have some legitimate reasons. Though less so these days. I am OS-agnostic having Windows, Linux and OSX in daily use here. (as well as other OS. RTOs and Hypervisors.)
  3. I'm more than willing to have an open discussion so long as you are willing to stop making insulting assumptions about my intelligence. It's ok if you disagree, but I've pointed out a bunch of different for profit softwares that are cross platform with no problems. Why would sidefx or autodesk develop their software for linux alongside windows if it was going to cost them money over time? These are for profit companies. And if it were such a huge problem to do, why are these companies still successful and still developing for linux?
  4. You really miss the point. The cost of a Linux version would not be paid for by the size of the Linux Market for Affinity. It would be subsidized by the other 96% of the Affinity customers. So I would be funding both my needs and yours.
  5. I noticed that many people write about the fighting with maintaining old programs. They write about compatibility modes, about old systems and even about dedicated machines not maintained for decades! I wonder why nobody uses virtualization? Personally, I have Linux as the main system, but all older programs, as well as Affinity, I run on VMware Workstation, losing capacity maybe 5%. And as the main computer has a strong processor with 24 cores and a lot of RAM, in practice I completely do not feel a slowdown. But the advantage is that such a virtual is portable to a new computer (it's just a few files!) and ready to run immediately. In addition the system, in this virtual machine, can be cut off from the Internet, without anti-virus and updates: fast, clean and safe. It maintains communication with the local network and resources, e.g. with NAS. In this way, you can have any "frozen" application for any long time. Including, for example, the active AD 2.0 license, even when the servers are turned off. I recommend!
  6. For the doubters, as with any VC funded company (who also dabbles in AI), this is what will inevitably happen: https://americandialect.org/2023-word-of-the-year-is-enshittification/ So now it's only a question about WHEN, but the shitty thing is that Affinity quite recently denied there even was a question of IF: Now that their true colors have been revealed, you can't trust anything anyone from that company says ever again and we can safely assume that the timeline to things going down the drain has been accelerated. https://mastodon.cloud/@designthinkingcomic/112172752241749103 So... guess I'm forced to look at Inkscape once again for an Illustrator alternative. At least there's some more options for Photoshop alternatives. Not really any alternatives for Indesign, though? At least not for Linux (which I'm probably moving to in the next few years due to the similar crap happening to Windows).
  7. I think all these multi-page posts on Linux and Affinity is the exact reason Serif do not do a Linux version, it's way too much hassle. Don't get me wrong I like Linux, Kali and Tails. I run both from my Dell Vostro. I love how Windows 11 is trying to emulate the look of mac.
  8. Well you disagree with Linus Torvolds who has repeatedly said Linux is not a good choice for a desktop, and it won't succeed as a general desktop system. Several major players including Dell and HP did support Linux by making it an option on their new desktops and laptops. This only lasted about a year. (I have been in the SW industry for about 40 years, though not IT) There were far too many problems even with the preinstalled Linux and low take up. That is why they dropped it. The reasons for not having it back have got greater, not lesser. To paraphrase: you may not like Windows, but it is the least-worst system we have. 🙂
  9. I walked away from my established image creation pipeline using Adobe products in favour of then upstart Affinity Photo on windows in 2016, in the wake of CC subscription sabre rattling. Based on a core ethos that I will use my skills to learn new things to retain control over how I want to run my business, control my costs and generally not accept things like subscriptions being forced, aggressive DRM and other less friendly business practices. Once you've been in the industry a while you notice a cadence. Eventually, your favoured developers may sell their company to a not so nice bigger company, that will inevitably kill the love for the product or abuse the relationship with the users to the point where customers want to leave. This is usually driven by the need for shareholders to see returns on investment over a short period of time rather than thinking of the long term effects because they don't care about that, once they get their money out, in comes another until the product is a husk of what it once was. Then comes the next upstart. Repeat sequence. Personally, I think the most trusted solution to this ill of modern society is open software projects, that cannot be corrupted in this way. We are already seeing open source projects like Blender beating established 3D applications and besting their development pace, product stability & winning market share. Onto the main point, like other people have mentioned, this sort of thinking does eventually cause you think about the entire operating system. In 2022, I switched completely to Linux. First a RHEL based distro and then to Fedora. Both RPM package managers. I'm not interested in server grade or critical systems levels of security or LTS. I just want an operating system that is open source derived, community driven and free of the things I dislike about Windows, Adobe, Autodesk etc etc. I'm not going to list all the reasons as that is not relevant. But if we are to speak about security, windows isn't exactly the poster child for a secure and problem free desktop environment 😁 Since moving to Linux, I am without a full featured 2D image editing experience, however I do have workarounds (Lutris/Wine/PhotoPea/Dual Boot/VMs) which get me most of the way whilst I wait for GIMP to finally be ready for production work in the way photoshop is. I've kept an eye on Affinity and tried getting it running via Wine. But ultimately, I've got the message loud and clear that Serif are not bothered if they lose customers like me. Here is my current solve to the lack of Linux options for 2D image editing and creation. 2D Vector Graphics: I use Inkscape for the somewhat small amount of Vector graphic work I do. It can open my old illustrator files with no problems and has workflows to replicate all the things I would use illustrator for. And it is open source, works offline and is DRM free. 2D Raster Graphics: For retouching, I use a mixture of Photopea (browser based photoshop clone), Fusion and Gimp. I'm truly amazed how good Photopea is. I am able to open and edit massive PSB files I made in Photoshop years ago with no compatibility issues. It's well worth a look for any Linux nomads. I think there are some limitations regarding channels but I haven't noticed them yet. I also would not be at all shocked if Adobe launch a browser based version of Photoshop. I believe this is already being trialled in Canada. Since Adobe is moving more and more to a service based model with augmentations of A.I technology in Photoshop and AfterEffects. I sometimes wonder whether the concept of having these sorts of applications installed on a local workstation will even exist at all in 10 years time....if you stay on the Adobe train that is. 32Bit Image editing/Compositing/Motion: For more complex & programmatic 32 bit image editing things, I will use Fusion Studio (around £300 for a perpetual dongle). This has worked on all the distros I have tried over the years. I also use Resolve. These both work well as a After Effects and Premiere replacement. Lastly, it is worth noting that the one major drawback for Photoshop artists using GIMP is the lack of non destructive layer based adjustments (adjustment layers) This is actually on the roadmap for later this year. Once GIMP gets this functionality, I will probably be able to use it as a true Photoshop replacement. GIMP Roadmap: https://developer.gimp.org/core/roadmap/ Photopea: https://www.photopea.com/ Inkscape: https://inkscape.org/ So anyway, that's my 2 cents. Remember that you have the ultimate tool at your disposal. Your brain and willingness to adapt your skills, time and resource towards things you believe are worth supporting. Don't wait for the Linux community to become big enough for Serif to care, you have the power to make it big enough by voting with your feet. As a general caveat. I appreciate this advice is not relevant to everyone and could be perceived as off topic, overly aspirational or even outright evangelical. But it is and has been valid for my situation and my hope, is that another person might find them selves reading this and could find this information to be helpful. I also have nothing against Serif, for all intents and purposes, they have been a very positive change the industry really needed, which makes it that bit more disappointing they could not stretch to a .RPM/.DEB/.run/portable compile of the software. If it were me, I would want to do it out of principle as a way to say we did something Adobe could not. From my position of not knowing anything about how this software is made, you;d be forgiven for expecting software as young as this, not to be so difficult to scale to additional opperating systems, that it would be cost prohibitive. This could be true, otherwise, it might be that they don't want to do it out of principle for some reason. IMO all the best software works on all three of the major desktop environments WIN, MAC, LINUX. Cheers Lee
  10. If Canva actually implements its 4-point plan as announced, the acquisition could be a win-win for everyone. I am thinking here of the users who would like to use the Affinity programs on Linux or on an Android tablet. And those who would like to work in a team on the same project. All this and much more could be realized through the merger. Canva may not have the best reputation, but they can ensure that their popularity increases with a smart approach. A smart approach would include offering stand-alone apps at a fair price so that people on low incomes can afford them too. Time will tell what will become of the award-winning software. Until then, it's a case of wait and see.
  11. of course, that too. I am going even further I am trying to look for something that actually works on linux, would be neat
  12. I use Linux and a ton of FOSS/FLOSS software. Inkscape is definitely no replacement for Illustrator or Designer. That's why the devs from Affinity need to fix Inkscape when they get laid off in 6 months from the Canva family.
  13. Waking up, new mail notification, Affinity and the subject reads… An exciting announcement … Web design apps added to the family? Linux development program? Video editing app? So many exciting possibilities… But no, the usual thing in business, the big fish had eaten the smaller fish. Obviously V3 will be rental. But the main concern I have is; since Affinity is web server based license. Canva could reject to honor any “perpetual” or “one payment” license in the future. That happened to me when eon-software was purchased by… oh sorry… when eon-software joined the Bentley family. The Bentley guys took down the license servers and asked users to pay 4 times the original price of the software to “update” the license. I don’t like it, but I went Monkey D. Luffy with that one. Well, It was fun while it lasted.
  14. I think, the problem is that there are to less developers working on GIMP. E.g. I remember that some years ago there was only one developer for the MAC-version. And he suddenly somehow disappeared, and there wasn't a new MAC-version for weeks, even the Linux- and Windows-versions were already published. It seems to be a general problem with Open Source that they are much too less supported by the public..
  15. Look at Open Source Design/Art Software: - Blender is probably the best example, but the interface is still a bit clunky and the learning curve is steep. Lot of support and the community is great, though. - GIMP is... not bad, but the interface is also quite poor. It's functional for most things, but still not Photoshop by a long shot. Still, you can find add-ons and tutorials easily. - Inkscape is absolute hell. I tried using it several times, but the interface is downright unusable and counterintuitive. It looks as if someone deliberately made it more difficult for the user. And I know some people use it regularly and have done great things with it, it is just too painful. If it was more user-friendly, I'd probably be using it instead of buying Affinity Designer. - Before purchasing Affinity Publisher, I had also tried Scribus, as an open source publishing software. Scribus may have advanced functions, but it suffers from the same clunky interface as most of the other design open source programs do. Scribus support and documentation is also poor, and it is extremely difficult to use. I love open source software. I used Ubuntu and Libreoffice for years at my desktop, and I only moved back to Windows because I got a Microsoft Surface and Clip Studio Paint did not have a version for Linux. I got back to Microsoft Office instead of Libreoffice because MS365 comes with 1TB Onedrive storage, and that was cheaper than keep using Libreoffice and get a stand-alone cloud storage service. Still, whenever I can I use open source software, and when I need a program that's the first I check. But when it comes to design, OSS does not quite cut it, except maybe for Blender, which despite the UI and learning curve, is a pretty amazing program overall. If there was a team working in an open-source suite of design software similar to Affinity with well-written documentation and an intuitive UI, I wouldn't even think about subscribing to their Patreon (or whatever) as long as they kept the development going.
  16. Other than the POSIX interface Linux and UNIX are completely different. Hence the debate between Tanenbaum and Torvolds. As you know Tanenbaum did Minix. The debate is fully public. The fundamental differences are why Linux isn't used in critical systems. Linux mostly isn't POSIX compliment. it also doesn't work like UNIX. Macs are based on BSD via NextStep. The problem is most Linux are different to each other and constantly changing. Most of my 40 years in SW has been below the OS API I normally work with RTOS, often bare metal. Though I used Solaris as a development host to target various other things. (PPC, 68K etc) and have run many OS on the desktop, CP/M, OS9, UNIX(various), LynxOS, Dos (various) Windows, OSX, and several Linux. Serif as major developers will have the inside track at both Microsoft and Apple on where the OS is going and the Beta's long before the public see them. Usually a year or more in advance. They will also have a hotline to the dev team and support. With Linux there are 100s of teams developing lots of different Linux to no particular plan. (many come and go, there are over 1000 obsolete Linux distributions) Serif and MS/Apple will sign mutual NDA's Where do you do to sign an NDA for "Linux"? I don't mean the kernel but the distribution? Where do you get the guaranteed plan for Linux for the next couple of years? No one develops SW like this for an unknown moving target This is why BMD for Resolve went with ONE Linux distribution (right down to a version number) from a major Linux distributor who was a legal entity they could sign legal agreements with. If you used *any* other Linux BMD said you were on your own. So you are asking Serif to put in a LOT of work for a version of Affinity on Linux for a very small numbers of users. The number of Linux users is apparently around 4% of the market of Linux, MS, Mac users. Most of them won't want Affinity. Serif won't get their money back. They are in business not religion.
  17. I get that it is an executable file. I also read all the problems and pitfalls of Flatpak in the links posted above. Flatpak does not run on most Linux. Not by a long way. The links above show that for a companies like Affinity and BMD Flatpak is not the answer. Indeed BMD had to change Linux target a couple of years ago and went for a single Linux not flatpak. However, BMD have a small Linux user base that spend a huge amount of money with BMD. Usually in the order of 10's and 100's of thousands because BMD have a whole hardware infrastructure. The Linux market is still only 4% of the desktop market, and that 4% is heavily fragmented. In the real world it is simply isn't viable for Affinity to do a Linux version. There are far more lucrative things they could be doing. For example, a Lightroom competitor.
  18. Imagine posssiblity of using Affnity on Linux. Nobody takes Linux seriously, because you can't do real graphics on it with a real dedicated program (Adobe/Affinity) - Gimp doesn't count. Mac OS and Windows are systems designed for productivity. But that would change if by some miracle the Affinity package was converted to Linux.
  19. I'm afraid that Serif Europe has made it crystal clear that there will be no Linux versions of their Affinity products not least because the Linux desktop market share still unfortunately lags well behind that of macOS. The only way I know to get a Unix-only solution to getting Affinity Photo to run on Linux is to use macOS as a VM on a Linux computer. However, there are promising developments about Affinity Photo to run in Wine on Linux as set out in this very useful discussion and the comparable one here:
  20. The number of potential Linux users has doubled from 1% of the market to 2% of the market. In any case, Affinity will probably only support one distro of Linux, making the potential market 0.01 of the overall market. It makes ZERO commercial sense for Affinity to support Linux.
  21. Hi there! I just wanted to share a list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts. This is a curated[*] list of some of the best freely available Fonts out there. The criteria I had in order to come up with this list: They have to be either Free or Open Source Fonts. They can be used in commercial projects (some restrictions may vary from Font to Font, so be sure to read first). I made my best to ensure this point, but I could be wrong and I'd be more that happy if you let me know if I made a mistake. No attribution required. In some cases (Serif and Sans Serif), they have to have more than two weights (at least one italic included). Support for Spanish characters like Á, Ü, ¿¡!?, Ññ (since I speak Spanish, this was mandatory, but there are many more good Fonts that don't cover this criteria). [*] I have basic knowledge about typography, but I have read reviews from well educated people in order to ensure quality. Well, here it is the list. As you can see, they are grouped by classification, and a general one in that regard. Some of the Serif and Sans Serif fonts were included in "Headlines" because they had one weight or they had no italics/oblique. [UPDATE] Added notes on some cases, like what the Font can be an alternative of. [UPDATE] Added the number of Fonts. [UPDATE] Adding previews of the fonts... eventhough some of them won't look as good, but it will help before clicking on a link. [UPDATE] Where possible, I added a link to real life examples linking to Fonts In Use, for inspiration. 22. A few important points. Macs and Linux are VERY Different, It is like saying that because you have a blue colour Toyota Prius and a blue Ferrari they are the same. MAC is POSIX compliant and Linux is mostly POSIX compliant. However under the POSIX they are very different. The only people to port to Linux were Black Magic and that was to a custom Linux and it only worked when you use ti with the BMD hardware. Minimum investment of $100,000 a seat. When Resolve went to the inexpensive ($500) version, it was on Mac and PC. The Linux version that worked without the expensive BMD HW (that started at about $20,000 a go) came several years later. And that was only for ONE version of Linux. Linux desktop users are about 2% of the market. Not all of them will buy Commerical software in the first place. Others have estimated that the market for a Linux version of Affinity tools is sub 1% of the market. It is just not worth doing the work.
  23. if it's not allowing you to enable it from the settings then it's likely what i theorized before: Wine does not come with windows-like GPU drivers, it only translates the application calls to the corresponding Linux drivers. So, the check affinity does to enable OpenCL is likely a GPU driver call, and since those are missing, it simply fallback to not allowing you to enable it also so you get a better idea, the UI is likely using some flavor of Windows Presentation Foundation libraries, and those are using DX9 so we can guess that the UI is using DX9 while the canvas and filters might be using a latter version of DirectX
  24. I'm using a PC which I built last year for general purpose use including writing and video work (DaVinci Resolve) under Linux. My book manuscript is almost ready for publication and I wanted to try the Affinity suite to prepare it for prepress. I purchased a new copy of Windows 10 and installed it as a dual-boot system, then installed the 30-day trial of the Affinity products. However, I have not been able to get the Affinity programs to operate properly under Windows. They report successful installation, but never go beyond the initial logo screen and eventually Windows tells me, "Affinity Publisher 2 is not responding" and offers me no choice except to continue to wait or to exit the program. This is frustrating because, before purchasing Windows, I successfully installed and ran the Affinity suite on the Linux side in VirtualBox using an unregistered Windows install for evaluation purposes. It was slow but appeared to be fully functional, and I expected it to work much better with a native and activated Windows OS. Instead, it's unusable. I posted this under the Windows Support forum and another user suggested that I try enabling/disabling hardware acceleration. It didn't make a difference; I received the same results either way. I've also tried with both the .msix and .exe installers, using the latter with "Run as Administrator." No help. The other forum user suggested that my AMD graphics card might be causing the incompatibility. Possible, but I'm not going to jettison a graphics card I'm happy with and which runs all the other software I use because of a problem with this one program. I'm not going to be moving forward with my purchase of the Affinity suite at this time (can you blame me?), but I'm still in need of a good .pdf generator for my book manuscript. If you resolve this issue please let me know and I'll reconsider purchase. In the meantime, I'm trying to learn Scribus. 25. Hi guys, could someone please give me a hand? I've been trying to use patches on Wine 9.4, but unfortunately, they don't seem to be compatible or I didn't use them correctly. I couldn't compile a working Wine 9. Using the guide you provided @Wanesty at https://codeberg.org/wanesty/affinity-wine-docs, with render=vulkan it works really well for me, however, DXVK loads under d3d9x for me, it detects my GPU 4070 but doesn't allow me to use OpenCL. I've tried several things like spoofing with dxvk.conf, but I don't quite understand how it behaves, it's very different from games. I want to ask you guys, does anyone know if it's already possible to use OpenCL? Either by using a new version of Wine with patches or something else? Could someone help me out? I use Arch Linux and my video card uses proprietary drivers, it's a 4070. I've tried reading almost all the threads in this forum. My English isn't that good, and I'm not very sure about things. I would appreciate it if you could guide me a little. I'd like to make the most of my GPU with DXVK properly configured. I have a small project, and despite having a 14th gen i5 processor, I'm starting to feel the workflow slowing down
