  1. That should mean that you have a hardware problem, or a device driver problem, or a Windows problem. A BSOD includes an error description on the screen. What does it say? What do the Windows admin tools (event log, etc.) show as the cause of the problem?
  2. I am also experiencing the thread stuck in device driver BSOD. It happens in designer. I can open designer and draw. It tents to happen when I have quite a few nodes, or when I am adding an effect. My laptop is dell 5567 I have tried updating graphics drivers from dell, and ten from intel. Two thinks happen prior to this error. 1)I had a new ssd professional installed 2)I updated to 1.9.1.979 It has not happened in my other graphics programs... clipstudio & inkscape I was considering taking my laptop back to the place that installed the ssd, but now I am wondering if it is a affinity problem. I have saved the mini dump files, but do not know how to read them. Are others experiencing this? Thank you.
  3. @rayzor2012 Welcome to the Affinity forums. I understand from posts made by Serif staff that it is not possible for any of the Affinity apps to directly cause a BSOD. If you read the whole of this thread you will find some possible solutions to the problem. HTH Jeff
  4. Thanks for the help, Walt. Never got the BSOD. Event Viewer just showed "Unexpected reboot." Installed the software to read the mini-dump files. Nothing was specific enough to show the exact cause (my ignorance perhaps). Installing all the driver and hardware updates, including those in Windows Update, fixed the reboot problem. Looked at preferences and set the ram limit to 8 GB, with 16 GB on board still have plenty of room for everything else. Thanks again - Dan
  5. That may be the case, because we do make use of your graphics card, however our application runs in “user mode” which means it can’t crash the operating system via a BSOD. Drivers run in “kernel mode” which means any errors in them can crash the whole operating system. You need to work out which driver is crashing (I assume it’s the GPU), and if you have the latest drivers, try using an older one to see if that fixes it. Failing that, try contacting HP.
  6. While I don't have a BSOD affinity crashing on splash with version 1.9 is all over the forum. If you search for it you will find links to beta versions that will most likely fix it for you.
  7. Since the update to 1.9 have been experiencing a BSOD when using Affinity Photo. "thread stuck in device driver" You device needs to restart. Bios and graphics drivers update from the HP site but to no avail. Graphics card AMD Radeon Pro WX3200.

  9. In order to get some hints what might be the cause for the blue screens you can try out BlueScreenView from here ... NirSoft's BlueScreenView ... note that you have to see if it works for Win 10 too then ... However, mostly the cause will be this one: Fix THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER BSOD error ( stop code 0x100000ea ) THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER error in Windows 10 ... etc. ...
  10. @AiDon Are you using the newest drivers? The reason I'm asking is that I've experienced several BSOD due to a Nvidia dll file. I asked on Nvidia forums, and Microsoft too to no avail. I then rolled back to older drivers, trying them one at a time. To my surprise, the drivers released before September worked just fine and now I don't have any issue anymore. For the the record, my crashes weren't related to the use of Affinity products, it was more severe as they were happening even while I was simply browsing or reading emails. And my configuration is with two 1080ti but if this is a driver issue (and it seems so) I think it doesn't matter. Long story short: my advice is to try one of the older driver if you haven't already. If you're incline to do so, my other advice is to use a tool called Display Driver Uninstaller. You need to be in Safe Mode. Follow these steps: Close all the running programs. Press the key Win + S and type msconfig Under the Boot tab, select Safe Boot Restart your PC Windows will enter in Safe Mode Launch DDD and apply the settings shown below. Now you can uninstall the display driver. Before restarting the PC re-open msconfig and uncheck Safe Boot Once you're logged back in, install the new driver. The one that's working for me is 456.38 Restart the PC Maybe you tried all this already, but in case you haven't, give it a shot. These are the settings I'm using:

Thanks for confirming that, I recommend downloading the following software and monitoring your GPU, as if you've tried wiping and reinstalling drivers and are still seeing this issue, it's certainly possible that this is caused by your GPU overheating, or possibly starting to fail. Hardware Monitor will allow you to keep an eye on this whilst you use Affinity and should hopefully point you towards the hardware you need to investigate, https://openhardwaremonitor.org/ If you'd like to try and generate a BSOD or error when the system crashes for further information you can try turning "Automatically restart" ON in System Properties > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure.   14. An Affinity application cannot cause that, because it runs in user mode. That's a sign of a driver issue of some sort, a Windows flaw, or a hardware error. From your description of what you're doing I would guess it's a graphics driver problem, and updating to a more recent version of the graphics card driver may help. If you get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) there will be an error message with important information about what went wrong. Please provide that if you can. Otherwies, the Event Viewer will be able to provide information about what went wrong, which will also be usefu
  15. @Gibsonion Changing the Renderer setting in Edit > Preferences > Performance to Warp should bypass your video card/driver and Affinity will then just use software to display the app on your monitor. If you switch to Warp and cannot recreate the BSOD this will help further confirm you have a Video card/driver problem. Remember to restart the app after switching to Warp If it works and you need to do some work the Warp setting is OK to use long term it just means your app will run a bit slower than when using a video card

You may think it's ridiculous sematics, but I've lost count of the number of times on Windows, and even on IBM mainframe computers over my 50+ years of experience there where only a single application was failing, but the cause was something wrong elsewhere in the system software or in the hardware. That application just happened to do something legitimate that the system or hardware reacted to improperly. For example, one cause of an unexpected kernel trap can be faulty RAM memory on a PC, and whether the error is triggered or not will depend on exactly how much memory is in use, and exact reference patterns that may be specific to one application. Another cause is faulty drivers, and possibly something that is occurring while you're dragging panels is causing your video driver to do something incorrect. And I personally experienced the cldflt.sys BSOD, which happened for me only when using Affinity (though many other Windows 10 users reported it in other applications), and was easily recreatable using a specific sequence of actions. And it was a Microsoft problem with an incorrect system update, which Microsoft eventually fixed. - - - - Thanks for the video. From looking at it, my best guess is that you have a video driver issue. I would suggest downloading the latest video driver from your video card manufacturer, deleting the current driver, restarting Windows, and installing the new driver. I'm glad you've at least got a repeatable recreation; that makes it much easier to tell when it's been fixed.

I created a new document, and the problem still occurs, interestingly without realising I first dragged only one tab to the area and the problem did not happen, then when I combined the 2 tabs and tried again, the error occurred almost immediately. The stop code is UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP The driver error is from ntoskrnl.exe (short for Windows NT operating system kernel) an essential Windows component responsible for hardware abstraction, process and memory management, and various other system services. You can claim it's not possible for Affinity to cause BSoD all you want, which maybe true from a purely technical stand point, but it's something that AD is doing that is triggering the issue that is causing the driver to crash. Pretending otherwise is just ridiculous semantics.

The BSoD only gave me some generic error message like oh dear, there has been an error and windows is is creating a dump file with a sad face emoji lol, but the dump file didn't go past 0% after several minutes of waiting so I rebooted I'll create a phone video of recreating the process as it doesn't seem like I'll get an answer without doing so. I'll be back shortly...
  19. The BSOD screen tells you what failed. I don't know off-hand how to find that anywhere else, though it's probably available in the dump file that Windows created. I think ihave found it there before but I would need to rediscover the details of how to do it. Googling for how to read a Windows dunno file would probably lead you to the tool you'd need to use.

After updating Windows 10 to Version 1909 a week ago, I began to have a crash issue starting in the last couple of days: the program freezes to a stand-still operation when I save a file for the second time in the Save-As mode to .AFPHOTO. I can perform the save-as in .AFPHOTO for the first time with no issue, but the program goes into a freeze mode (but no BSOD, thanks God!) when I do another Save-As operation, and the only way to close the program is to cancel the task in Task Manager. Using the Save mode, there is no problem at all! The Affinity Photo version being installed used is Version 1.7.3.481. I did try unintall and reinstall the program to no avail! Does anyone experience this same issue? What is the suggested fix?
  21. Thank you! I installed the Windows 10 updated Version 1909. It worked fine for a short while until yesterday, I ran into an issue in Affinity Photo that again freezes up, no BSOD thanks God, when saving my work to .afphoto. The only way to get out is to close the task via Task Manager. The strange thing was that a backup file was created by Affinity Photo (I guess!) with a pre-assigned file name that is limited to only 9 characters with letter, character & number, and cannot be changed. Did you anyone have this issue?

  24. Upon installing Windows update KB4524570, Affinity Photo crashed when I saved a photo file to .afphoto. The program just closed. Upon uninstalling the update, it worked fine again. Same issue with Windows update KB4517389 with an exception of the BSOD that came on. What are the causes and is there any permanent fix? I am on Windows version 1903.
