Rocketdrive got a reaction from garrettm30 in Horizontally docking palettes for Mac version
I can dock palettes in the Windows version left and right to already existing palettes, not only top an bottom. I find this super useful, as I hate overlapping palettes and prefer tiling workspaces whenever possible. Unfortunately, this detail never made it to the macOS version: we can dock one column left and/or right of the canvas, but we can't add a second column to an already existing one. It spoils the experience on macOS.

Basically every collection of widgets that has non-modal functionality and has to be accessed repeatedly during work (=every palette) should be dockable.

Rocketdrive got a reaction from Skytouch in DAM - What are people using?
For Photos I still rely on Lightroom, now in the CC flavour. It fits my needs, as I shoot with three different cameras and can import AND edit images stright on my iPhone, iPad or workstation. All files get synced across devices and the cloud, which is really useful IMO.
But then we said assets, and that includes more than just photos for me. I work with layout files as Indesign and Affinity documents, PDFs, use occasionally some old Illustrator files, more and more 3D object and scene formats, image sequences and movie files. A really good DAM would have to play nice with all of these, have tags, metadata and also translate/sync platform specific attributes. Since I don’t have that, I just use Explorer/Finder, and sometimes Bridge. Together with a somehow matured project file structure, I tend to manage and find what I need without huge efforts.
I think a modern DAM should be something like Dropbox with a variety of viewing/editing plugins for the various file formats in question. I at least work across different platforms and am a huge fan of a common file structure across devices, common file formats and being able to access and edit as much as possible regardless of the end device.

This one is really easy, Affinity has all the tools. You can use the file attached as a starting point, and add artboards for other social platforms at will. You can lock the file in Explorer/Finder to prevent accidental overwriting. Use the export persona to write out all sizes at once.

Rocketdrive got a reaction from Cuando in Palette docking on macOS, scripting
v2 is a nice update. Unfortunately, palette docking on macs still hasn't been addressed. While the windows version allows two or more columns of palettes to be docked side by side, in macOS only one column is possible. I much prefer the tidyness of docked palettes, and really can't stand the floting ones Would be nice if finally, after so many years, someone took the time to fix this.
Would be interesting to know how Serif thinks about scripting. From the perspective of tech savvy users it opens up so many possibilities. Is it ever coming?

There isn't any scripting support in V2 yet. We have a dedicated scripting team here typing very quickly but still no definite timeline for release yet.

I, too, would love to have a user configurable, simple hotkey or other method for changing brush opacity and size on the fly. There are many best practices out there, Serif just needs to pick one:
Sketchbook has an always visible widget, dragging within horizontally changes brush size, vertically: opacity Procreate has always visible sliders for both Photoshop has a hotkey combo Blender (which has many brush uses) has a hotkey ZBrush also has single hotkeys

    Hey there,
consider adding this "feature" for us Mac folks, too. Not only do docked palettes declutter the workspace, but currently floating palettes stay in FRONT of open/save dialog windows. Could call it even a bug, and an annoying one.
    Cheers,

Rocketdrive got a reaction from Markio in Is there a reason for different sized palettes in Publisher?
In Publisher, the text wrap settings open in a huge window, at least compared to other studio palettes. And then there is the baseline grid settings, which open in a smaller, yet also somehow differently looking window.
Is there a reason for those differently looking UIs? If not it would be great to make them just as any regular studio palette, and also make them dockable. Oh and make all of them horizontally stackable on Macs, please.

Yep. But it should be IMO. I don't see a reason for undockable, humungous windows that could work just fine as dockable studio palettes.

Just stumbled upon this issue, but thankfully I found this thread.
I agree, there needs to be some sort of visible indication that the font size, as defined by my styles, will be overridden within text boxes that have scaling applied. I like the detached handle for quick layout mockups without having to edit every style, but in the end defined styles must have absolute priority IMO.

Maybe we can agree that anythig should be assignable to a shortcut? I'd like to map brush presets, toggles (like protect alpha) or other paint/illustration related toggles and brush tweaks to keyboard shortcuts.

Yup, saving channels makes sense if I want to reuse them. But I am doing lots of quick, ephemeral selections and I can't judge the result as long as marching ants visually interfere, especially with complex selections. I hope we'll just get the "hide selection" button eventually.

You can have one on the left and one on the right, I think. But you can't have two docked on either side.

It has been a while, and I have seen this as a request here and there.
Please, consider adding this to the Mac version, for the sake of my sanity as well as for feature parity of the two platforms. With very seldom exceptions, I can't stand floating palettes and was really happy that, in Windows at least, I could snap and stack them horizontally, i.e. in columns that are part of the main window. Now that I am back on a Mac I'd love to finally see this resolved.
In the Mac version, there is the one main column, and if I want two columns of palettes I end up with a couple of floating ones, which I can't stand.

Rocketdrive got a reaction from s.auler in Drag and Drop images from Browser for Mood Boards in Designer
I just realized that I could use a canvas in Designer as a mood board, like PureRef.
Unfortunately, drag and drop from a browser drops the link as text only, at least from Edge.
May I suggest that the images are directly downloaded to the canvas instead, much like in PureRef?
The real advantage would be that such mood boards would be file based, locally available as well as usable across platforms (Windows, Mac, iPadOS) with cloud syncing.
    What do You say?

Been experimenting with using Affinity Photo for digital painting recently and it's been loads of fun - even made some new painterly brushes in the process!
Here are a few tentacles I illustrated to start the week off on the right foot.

I currently use Lightroom to add a dash of grain to all my photos. I really like the look, and it is one of the very few things that make LR unique. It is quite astonishing, but I have not found any other software that gives me all of the grain controls - and quality - that LR has.

If You have an empty feature slot to fill in Affinity Photo (or that mysterious asset management app I heard about) - please fill it in with high quality grain. It is important to add controls for the size, the amount and the contrast. Yes, very small noise sizes make huge JPGs, but I don't care, storage is cheap these days :)

Exactly my thoughts. File management needs improvement. iPad OS will bring some file management improvements by itself, and I hope that Affinity can upgrade the experience on the iPad.

Once I import (=make working copy) or open (=edit original) an existing affinity file from the cloud: is there a way to tell which way it came into appAffinity? It makes quite a difference.

Rocketdrive got a reaction from Psych in Designer and Photo brush engines
I’ve been using Photo for some time as my primary illustration and drawing tool. I always felt that the brush engine was not top notch, but I kept going because of the completeness and power of the app. I bought Designer for iPad right after it was published and was positively surprised that the brush engine for the pixel persona felt snappier than the one in Photo. I would like to assume that this upgraded experience is coming to Photo, too
I would also love to see a much improved brush speed on the desktop. It is strange, but brush strokes feel most sluggish on my Windows workstation, though in theory it should be up to four times faster - according to geekbench comparisons between the A10x and a Xeon E5-2680 v2. Affinity tells me that the brush engine is CPU bound, so I hope it can tap into all cores for best speed.
